GBH was about a concierge who fucks elderly women who stay at his hotel, it's not the lowest brow but it's not Citizen Kane either. As far as comedies go it's far from the most sophisticated but it's not Jackass. His movies do have kitschy elements.

we're going to have to disagree with the term low-brow. you can't say it's not citizen kane (which is not a comedy) then say "but it's not jackass" (which is entertaining slapstick comedy).

Wes has interesting stories, zany characters, amazing sets, beautiful cinematography, and amazing soundtracks - all indicated by those category oscar nominations. You really cannot compare GBH to 40 year old virgin or jack & jill or some other "lowest common denominator" comedies. Wes creates beautiful movies, which happen to also be very funny.

Seriously, i can't even fathom calling a wes anderson movie low-brow.

I said it was kitschy but maybe I passively called it low-brow as wiki says it "is a low-brow style" but when that same article has the first picture of a sepia painting of a cat with a ruffled collar (you can't tell me that it's not straight out of Wes Anderson) I can't see how Anderson's work isn't kitschy.

I'm saying that nothing Wes does is low brow (or Kitschy - which mean the same thing).

low-brow - not highly intellectual or cultured.

also

kitschy - a low-brow style of mass-produced art or design using popular or cultural icons. Kitsch generally includes unsubstantial or gaudy works or decoration, or works that are calculated to have popular appeal.

these things are completely opposite of what wes anderson does. life aquatic, royal tannebaums, grand budapest... these are not mass appeal movies. they practically niche. they aren't universally loved nor are they blockbuster hits.

low-brow would be transformers. if you want to say some visuals are kitschy to establish a period for the movie, go for it, but don't say wes is catering to some mass level of appeal, because that's ridiculous.
