If someone is really earnest, although boring or awkward, and you respond with snark and insulting sarcasm, that's mean. You started being mean from the point at which you thought it would be appropriate to play an elaborate prank to make fun of the guy instead of just saying "Not interested."

Those send dates don't say "earnest." They say, "I message everyone the same canned greeting. Repeatedly." If someone doesn't respond in two weeks, they probably aren't interested.
