And this was the Dutch Health, Welfare and Sport minister.
Funny? Good. Because she also was a very well known freestyle swimmer (European and Dutch champion), participated in the 1960 Summer Olympic, sports journalist and she won every election with preference vote.
Sometimes a picture really doesn't say a thousand words.

very well known freestyle swimmer

Here is the issue: Doesn't matter. This "I was an athlete, now I'm old and I can get fat" logic is the real issue. Health is a life time event, not a sprint. I can bite off on electing her because she might be very qualified but she WAS an Olympian and NOW she is an Obese Minster of Health. She should be the leader in geriatric diet and exercise because that IS HER JOB.

EDIT: Okay I guess I need to define a leader because some people are responding believe I am saying that Good Example=Good Leader. No, being a good example is one attribute of a good leader. They are not mutually exclusive. A leader is not a solid term, its dynamic and their success is only measured by the success and perception of their people.

Is it logic? Many athletes who were active and suddenly find themselves in the middle of a fairly normal life gain more weight than they probably expected to, because they developed calorie-rich habits when their bodies needed it, and didn't change them to fit lower activity levels.

Her job is to do her job as the minister and she does it well. Only being able to lead by example is inane.

What if she was super fit, but sucked at her ministerial duties? It'd be okay, cause she fits into your silly view that the Minister of Health has to meet your health requirements?

These strawmen burn so easily!

The number of people who don't know what a straw man is is astounding. A two minute google search is all it takes.

Do you people realize that someone can be a good fitness role model AND be a good politician. They aren't mutually exclusive, and when we are choosing people to run are country, we should ask for nothing less than the best.

On the other hand, there are a lot more fit people than there are competent, available, and willing-to-work-for-government-salary healthcare system administrators for the whole of a sovereign nation.

I'm certain nobody is looking at ministers of health as role models.

*roll models

Do you people realize that someone can be a good fitness role model AND be a good politician.

But you do realize that the latter is much more important as a Health Minister than the former, right?

yeah no one's questioning that. seriously? what we're questioning is if you can still be good at your job as health minister even if you don't look like the pillar of health. and yes, that's very possible.

the problem lies in American politics, where most people vote for whoever is the most charming and attractive, instead of who's good at their job. same goes with our food -- our fruit and veg is less nutritious than that of most European countries, but you get bet your hat your that it's the prettiest, plumpest fruit and veg in the world

wish we followed their example and valued good work instead of good looks

Would you accept an finance minister who had "irregularities" in their taxes? Or who had declared bankruptcy?

You can say this only if:

  • you used to be fit when you were young
  • now you're still fit and you're in your 50's
  • you have the same type of job situation they have, and
  • you have similar biology as them

If you look at experienced doctors, a lot of them are fat. They can carve you up better drunk and blindfolded than you could on your best day. This is because they put in a ton of hours at the office, don't have time for proper meals, and they often fly to conference where they also eat rich food, not to mention what stress does to your body.

I'd take an obese minister of health who knows what they're talking about over a fit idiot any day.

oh give me a break... that's precisely the type of thinking that is making us fat... "OMG the delicate geniuses need to work so much that they can't make good choices"

i don't care who you are, you can choose apples over chips, stairs over elevator, and sleep over alcohol.

No, sorry. Lack of time is a bullshit excuse, because it literally takes no time at all to eat less food. And eating the right amount of food is the only thing you need to do to not be obese.

Actually being fit is an entirely different matter, though.

Who told you she thinks she CAN get fat?

Clearly this is an unrealized reference to women who let themselves go after marriage. Which is such a load of horseshit. People get old. Staying fit is difficult as you age. You should try, but there is a point where you are what you are. And you should be happy with it. At a certain age, you become attracted to the person and not so much the container. The container is nice. You'll probably end up stuffing part of yourself inside of it, both emotionally and physically. But it won't look like a teenager forever.

Her job is to manage the affairs of a bureaucratic division of government, not to swim competitively. I'm sure her job entails a lot of high-level decision making, negotiation between different divisions of government, and management of internal affairs, but almost no swimming, running, or weight lifting.

But yes, it is funny that she is fat and she's the minister of health. Because fat people aren't healthy. Get it? That's the joke.

Maybe she can use her experiences of weight gain to better and help prevent future athletes weight gain/poor health habits.

This "I was an athlete, now I'm old and I can get fat" logic is the real issue.

Must be easy to look at someone and know all their health issues and lifestyle choices just based on their appearance. A breakthrough in medical science, if you think about it.

Sometimes a picture really doesn't say a thousand words.

I think a more appropriate saying would be "Sometimes you can't judge a book by its cover"

Pretty sure that's Newt Gingrich

Sorry to break it to you, Netherlands, but your minister is a Slitheen.

Would we accept someone in charge of financials that has a 430 FICO and outstanding debts all over? Probably not. It is indicative that the person in question makes bad financial decisions. How could you trust them then to make the correct decisions for the public?

You should not have a morbidly obese health minister. Having been an athlete in the past is no excuse to let yourself become a before picture for a Jenny Craig ad. You have to set an example. "Do as I say and not as I do," doesn't cut it.

[–]Noltonn [

The thing is, there's a much closer connection between your own finances and your country's, meaning that if you're bad at controlling the first, you're probably bad at controlling the second too. But staying healthy has very little responsibility overlap with being a health minister. None of the duties in being a health minister have anything to do with your own personal health.

I don't think being fat necessarily translates to not having good judgement. There's obese people in all kinds of high profile jobs, from CeO's to scientists. If they can do that well than why not run a health department? Just because they are fat doesn't mean they advocate obesity as a good thing. It's just that there is an obvious apparent irony to the situation that's easy to target, but I don't think it holds up to scrutiny without taking into account other factors of the person.

Do as I say, not as I do

But your analogy falls short in one way. If the financial advisor has terrible personal economics because they spend all of their money, but still provides the correct advice on how you should save your money than that would be equivalent to this situation, and it would still make that person an effective financial advisor. The whole point isn't that the financial advisor or health minister is saying follow my example on impulsiveness or self control, rather follow my advice on how to be healthy or financially sound. They aren't self control or impulse coaches, they provide information. They can still give the correct advice even though they don't have the ability to follow it themselves. If the financial advisor has their finances in order but recommends someone else spend all of their money on the lotto or investing in beanie babies, then they would be shirt just financial advisors even though they have their own finances in order. Similarly if the health minister was super fit and recommended people eat fast food and drink excessively they would be a shitty minister.
