読み始めてみたが量が膨大すぎて机の前では気が散ってとても読めない。
結局夜中に目が覚めたとき、ベッドの中で iPhone に読み上げさせて聞いた。聞き終わった頃には空が白みはじめていた。まさに本１冊読んだ気分だ。
そんな長時間続けて聞けたのは非常に興味深い内容だったからだ。これまで書かれたことがない内容が数多く含まれている。

公認自伝本の批判
この作品は完全に集中して読むべきだ。だから一部だけ引用して読者の興味を殺ぐことはしたくはない。はっきりしているのは Parker がきちんと理解しているということだ。これは Walter Isaacson のジョブズ自伝本とは著しい対照を為す。事実 Ive は Isaacson の本を上手にやっつけている。
The piece is worth your full undivided attention, so I won’t quote or spoil much. But what’s clear is that Parker gets it — in stark contrast to Steve Jobs’s anointed biographer Walter Isaacson. Ive, in fact, effectively trashed Isaacson’s book:

“I’ve seen Jony deeply frustrated, but I’ve never seen him rant and rave,” Laurene Powell Jobs said, and she added, laughing, that she would not have said the same of her husband. (And it’s hard to imagine Ive using a disabled-parking spot, as Jobs often did, long before he was unwell.) Ive likes to be liked; the story seemed to be a preëmptive defense of Jobs veiled as self-criticism. It was also an indirect response to Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography of Jobs, which, though not hostile, included examples of unkindness. In a later conversation, Ive said that he’d read only parts of the book, but had seen enough to dislike it, for what he called inaccuracies. “My regard couldn’t be any lower,” he said, with unusual heat.

In addition to Ive, Parker also has honest, bracing quotes from Tim Cook, Bob Mansfield, and others. It’s just an astounding, thunderous example of the new post-Jobs/post-Katie Cotton “open Apple”, and Parker has made the most of it.

幅広く取り上げる
十分に読み込む必要があるとはいえ、特筆すべきは Jony Ive が万遍なく扱われている［？］点だ。明らかに Apple Watch は彼のお気に入りだ。しかし彼はアップルの新キャンパスの指揮監督にも深く関与しており、またこれまで発表されていないアップルストアの新デザインについても Angela Ahrendts に協力しているのだ。
There’s much to digest, but I think the biggest takeaway is that Jony Ive is stretched very thin. The Watch is clearly his baby, but he’s also heavily involved in the supervision of Apple’s new campus and he’s working with Angela Ahrendts on a heretofore unannounced redesign of Apple’s retail stores.

Not only is it full of fascinating details, it puts Ive at the center of Apple, where he belongs. As the piece’s author, Ian Parker, writes: “More than ever, Ive is the company.”
これまでも数十年の間真実だったが、一般のひとの目には、ベテランのアップルウォッチャーにとってすらはっきりとは分からなかった。アップルの秘密主義はそれほど大きかったので、一般大衆はアップルのすることすべてをスティーブ・ジョブズのせいにし勝ちだった。本当の話が明らかにされるのはこれからで、まだ Ive は本来彼にふさわしい名声を得てはいない。
This is something that’s been true for a couple decades, but still isn’t apparent to most people — even veteran Apple watchers. Such is the company’s secrecy, and the tendency of the public to equate everything Apple does with Steve Jobs, that the true story has yet to be told. Ive has not gotten the credit he deserves.

In the New Yorker profile, Ive complains about Walter Isaacson’s biography of Jobs and the many inaccuracies it contains. His regard for the book “couldn’t be any lower,” Ive says.
しかし同書の最大の欠点は不正確さにあるのではない。それはいかに Isaacson がアップル内部の仕組みを見抜く力がなかったかという点なのだ。アップルが実際に運営される仕組みについてジョブズはほとんど示さなかった。例えば iPhone の開発には３年もの努力と無数の問題ややり直しがあったが、Isaacson の本ではその点についてはたったの一章も割かれておらず、すべてはジョブズの視点から語られている。もちろんジョブズは iPhone の中心だったが、それ以上に Ive のスタジオのデザイナーたちがそうだった。その点が Isaacson の本では触れられていないのだ。
But the inaccuracies are not the book’s biggest failing: It’s how little insight Isaacson provides into the inner workings of Apple. Steve Jobs reveals little about how Apple actually operates. The development of the iPhone, for example, was a three-year effort with countless problems and restarts, but it’s covered in a single chapter and told from Jobs’ point of view. Jobs was central to the iPhone, of course, but more so were the designers in Ive’s studio, whose story wasn’t covered in Isaacson’s book.

デザインスタジオがすべて
デザインスタジオこそがすべてなのだ。だから Ive は Isaacson のジョブズ伝記本を酷評したのだ。Isaacson はアップルの成功をほとんどジョブズの手柄にして、それ以上深く追跡することをしなかった。真の秘密は語られないままだった。Ive のスタジオと１９人のデザイナーたちこそがアップルの創造力の真の源泉なのだ。ジョブズはまとめ役であり共同制作者だった。もちろんその役割を卑小化すべきではないが、しかし彼の貢献だけがすべてではなかったのだ。
The design studio is soup-to-nuts — and that’s why Ive dissed Isaacson’s biography of Jobs. Isaacson allowed Jobs to take most of the credit for Apple’s work without digging further, leaving a central truth untold: that Ive’s studio and the 19 designers who work there are the primary source of Apple’s creativity. Jobs was the facilitator and a major collaborator —- whose role absolutely should not be diminished — but his contribution was not the only one.
然るみんなの耳にはジョブズの声しか聞こえなかった。Ive の側から見た話は語られないままだった。
And yet Jobs’ voice is essentially the only one anybody has heard. Ive’s side of the story remains to be told.

The New Yorker の記事が初めての優れた試みだ。ほとんどのひとがまだ耳にしたことのない Ive の決定的役割を公式に立証しようとするものだ。
The New Yorker piece is a good first attempt at an official version that validates Ive’s critical role at Apple, which most people still haven’t grasped.
