President Barack Obama implored viewers of the Grammy awards on Sunday night to help stop sexual violence.
"It’s not okay – and it has to stop," he said of rape in a recorded message.
“It’s on us – all of us - to create a culture where violence isn’t tolerated, where survivors are supported, and where all our young people – men and women – can go as far as their talents and their dreams will take them," he added in the public service announcement.
The message is part of the White House's "It's On Us" public awareness campaign aimed at ending sexual assault at college campuses by enlisting the support of sports stars and celebrities. According to the Post, the president asks the artists featured at the Grammys to ask their fans to contribute to the effort.

Now the GOP will try to pass a law legalizing rape. Just because the President is against it.

The President has come out against rape....now let's see how long it takes for Republicans to argue rape is a "choice" and only happens to women who "tempt" men. Hmmm....Rubio? Christie? I'll wait....

Republicans have already supported the notion that a woman who is raped can "shut down" the mechanism that gets pregnant. Another Republican wanted to define "Legitimate Rape." The GOP WOW (War On Women) is bizarre and embraced by their women.

The GOP (Get Obama Party) are already in favor for it. The President should come out for breathing or not to drink the bottles under the kitchen sink and the GOP will be against it.

Well, not so much for rape as for the freedom to rape. He, of course, would never make the choice to be raped, but who is he to tell women they can't get themselves raped if they want to?

President Obama's message should be felt by all Americans. I sure he was thinking of his daughters and all women of America (and men) when he said this has to stop.
    • Alison Wilkie Carnie · Top Commenter
Most eloquent .. he grew up with a strong, independent, accomplished mother, grandmother and wife. Only secure men can celebrate women ... His daughters are so, so lucky. My father was a teacher and home all the time and never bothered with me ...

So true.......I never stood a chance. Trauma heaped upon trauma. Finally now I have been in a PTSD therapy group, and it is the best thing that's happened to me since I was a little girl. I feel like a new life is possible now, one that could be really joyful. I wish I had been able to participate in such a group when I was younger, but am very grateful for it now. I am very sorry for any/everything that has happened to you.

Rape is committed by a small fraction of criminals. The vast majority of men have nothing to do with it; we didn't create a "culture" that legitimized it by these criminals. The campaign to stigmatize "men" for rape when there are more male victims of rape than women (when you include prison rape), is simply misandry.

The hysteria over rape ignores the fact that rape has declined over the last 20 years.
    • Janice D'Agostino · Top Commenter · Spoon Mage at Mindful Palate
by all the best estimates, 1 in 5 women are raped. Unless a small fraction of men are extraordinarily active, there are more than you think out there raping. Statistically, women know their rapists, this makes your comment even less likely to be true. Most rapes do not go reported. Why? Because of people like you that are police officers, friends, family, officers of the court, jurors, etc... Of those few rapes that get reported, less than 3% are convicted. This does not mean that there are few rapists, only that the system is set up - criminalizing every aspect of the victim down to what she was wearing, doing, thinking, what has she ever worn, done, or thought - in a way that is unlike any other crime. A women who is raped is assumed to be just an unhappy lover. That is the culture of rape you dismiss. "Hysteria"???? When you are raped, come talk to me about your hysteria.

President Obama's statement addressed rape and attempted rape. And because the act of rape has decreased during the last 20 years doesn't make it less abhorrent.

I guess you forgot that those males getting raped are being raped by "men" as well.

I'm a male and I don't feel stigmatized by this campaign. I've seen the affects of rape, abuse, and molestation and it's not pretty. It's not like every case gets reported either. I'm glad rape cases are declining but it would be better if rape stopped all together.

Was what he said wrong? Why do you feel the need to step in on this conversation and make light of it? Can't you just let someone be right about something without jumping in and trying to make yourself sound like some expert throwing out numbers that you have no way to back up. Obliviously your numbers are wrong because people are raping. So yes , someone should stand up against it . You show you have no interest in doing so , so why don't you just sit back and let others be heard on this subject. That includes the President.

YouGov Results in 2010 US Elections
YouGov's general population samples are selected from its panel to match the distribution of demographics and other characteristics in the adult U.S. population: age, race, gender, education, employment, income, marital status, number of children (from the 2010 American Community Survey), voter registration, time and location of internet access (from the Current Population November 2010 and October 2009 supplements), interest in politics, religion, and church attendance (from the Pew Religious Landscape Survey of 2008).
Stratified subsamples (on four demographics) are selected from YouGov's opt-in panel and invited to participate in surveys. Samples are weighted by propensity score deciles estimated from the remaining variables using a case-control logistic regression.
