pansexual and genderqueer white student, unresolved pronouns (she/her and they/them if you gotta!) with an interest in tea and knitting. eastern standard time. snapchat and instagram are both bouzingo.
We need to stop apologizing for big corporations like Marvel and Disney, and instead start getting with the program.
Disney/Marvel only takes half steps in terms of representation and diversity because we — white fans specifically! — are content with that, and will be hostile and rude to anyone who isn’t.
Let me repeat: Marvel/Disney counts on us to silence POC voices for them, so they can put in a bare minimum of work.
If I have to see just one more wistful post hoping for better diversity in Marvel films derailed by a HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN ABOUT [five gifs of black side characters, two of them Rhodey played by two separate actors], it would still be too much.
White fans: we need to stop speaking over legitimate complaints voiced by POC fans, and start paying attention instead. We need to use our space and influence to demand better, instead of being Marvel/Disney’s unpaid status quo enforcers.
Complacency is comfortable, but we need to realize that comfort is not afforded to everyone in the fandom, and until it is we need to stop and THINK about what we’re watching and why we’re so comfortable while others are not!!
Skip Ant-Man. Start hyping Black Panther.
Skip Age of Ultron. Watch F4ntastic instead just to make perfectly clear what racial revisionism is acceptable and what’s not.
Stop promoing Agent Carter as anything other than what it currently is. Start those delicious Isaiah Bradley fancasts and Peggy/Gabe fics.
Let’s see what YOU think Anna Jarvis looks like, because I don’t think Agent Carter is actually going to show us the single canon Jewish lady in the entire MCU.
Instead of petulantly pointing out Hayley Atwell’s heritage in order to derail the necessary conversations we’re having, begin incorporating biracial and First Nations Peggy Carter into your fic and art.
Start actively demanding Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan in the Captain Marvel and Inhumans movies. An Asian actor for Danny Rand. A Latina actress for Maria Hill. Romani actors for Wanda and Pietro.
Make it clear that what we have now is not enough.
