I never played Morrowind. Is this what Dark Elf architecture looks like? No epic, giant statues, no trees, no banners? I got the impression from the tattered flags adorning the Grey Quarter that dunmeri loved bright colors. All of their clothing is bright too.

This is the city of Blacklight the folks on Solstheim are always going on about? Holy crap, I thought that Raven Rock looked like that because of the ash. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I think Dunmeri architecture is really ugly if this is what it looks like. I thought it would be more akin to giant mushrooms with the little shell-houses at the base painted all kinds of colors- bright blues and reds - and adorned with all sorts of lantern lights and statues everywhere - more like a daylight, cosmopolitan version of Blackreach.

I've only played Skyrim and Oblivion. I think this city is quite ugly to be honest. I guess I expected something far more grand after what I've seen from the Dwemer and the Snow Elves. I don't feel that this is a good representation of such an ancient and established people as the Dunmer. These guys are as ancient as the High Elves. I would think that their cities should at least be equal to the Dwarven cities at the height of their civilization.

I don't know enough about Dunmer lore specifically to explain the whole thing to you, but that is an accurate depiction of their architectural style. Here's a screenshot from Morrowind: http://images.uesp.net/b/b7/MW-place-Ald%27ruhn.jpg

You're getting crushed, but I agree. Always liked the Telvanni towers more than this style.

Telvanni towers are made of mushroom out of pure convenience. All architecture is the result of technical constraints and later, aesthetics. It helps building consistent universes, something Skyrim definitely lacked.

The ancient Nords and the Dwemer built pretty much everything in Skyrim and each has a consistent aesthetic.

It's all the samey.

Telvanni Wizards know how to grow magic mushrooms using enchanted seeds and crystals, so they don't need to bother with the giant shells or the bricks Hlaalus use.

Redorans happen to live near ancient insect graveyards, so they turned the gigantic shells into manors and houses.

Hlaalu don't have any special features, so they build stuff out of adobe, like Dres dunmers do.

According to concept art, Redoran buildings are only shell-shaped, not actual shells (other than the Skar of course).

I'm sorry, I'm not sure exactly what you're sayin. At least not in terms of how it relates to my post.
