Rich people: "Poor people eat unhealthy because they're stupid."

There's a lot of truth to what you've written.

A large bag of store brand frozen mixed vegetables costs less than $3.50.

Bananas are consistently 57 cents a pound. Various fruits and vegetables are always going on sale.

You can buy discounted meats that are nearing expiry.

You just have to make the effort. People make terrible decisions and instead buy crap.

Bananas are consistently 57 cents a pound.

According to this local grocery store, the price is Approx $.33 each 1.72 / KG 0.78 / LB.

You can buy discounted meats that are nearing expiry.

In other words, the poor should eat what the rest of us won't - and if they don't, they're not making the effort and making terrible decisions.

Do you have any idea of what it's like to really be poor at all?

I buy discounted meat. Grocery stores can't sell it if it's actually expired or gone bad, they discount it because it's close to expiring. As long as you cook it the same day it's purchased, there's nothing wrong with it.

Or freeze it, that's worth noting as well.

It's much harder to eat when it's frozen

Freeze and defrost. I tend to buy my meat in bulk, I'll clear the clearance section out at 11pm when I shop. I'll package and freeze it that night and lift it out the night before I want to use it.

I was kidding around but that's a good method. I use it with fresh fish that's still good but gets reduced by 30% way more often than the meat at my local stores. I wonder if it's because people get more frightened by overdue fish than meat.

I believe that is the case. People are always iffy on non-frozen fish.

Expiry dates are only estimates. Meat that is one day from expiring can be unsafe as well. Two or three days from expiring is much more likely to be safe. Like anything else, there is an element of probability that affects how fast bacteria present in the meat will grow, and how many microbes are present in the meat to begin with.

I made 106K last year. The only meat I eat myself and serve my children is close to expiry / reduced in price. There is absolutely nothing wrong it.

56k single person, same here. I also buy close to expiry bread at night from the bakery

I always shop like the last paycheque was my last ever paycheque.

Ya know, if everyone did this, they'd just raise the price.

Turns out I'm glad people are so fickle.

Goes for a lot when it comes to purchases. Some people subsidize others on some things.

It's why when talking macroeconomics you can't compare it to a household or person. If we were all frugal and cheap we'd all be flat broke.

That's fine. Some of us prefer it fresh. If you don't think there is a flavour difference, you're wrong.

A lot of the meat I eat is actually flash frozen so it's cheaper than grocery store price but still fresh once thawed.

Where do you get the flash frozen stuff?

The meats are hormone free, drug free, free range. Grass fed and grain finished. I get them from the farmer's market. They producers are Mennonite farmers in the St. Jacob's area of Ontario. They sell to smaller shops in the area, and farmer's markets.

Nice. Growing up my family used to always get Hutterite chickens. The quality was just obviously better. Standard store bought chicken smells weird when it cooks and definitely doesn't taste as good.

As much as I sneer at free-range-organic-hippy-raised fetishization of food and the snobby people who advocate for it out here in Vancouver, I'm happy to eat far less meat, but better meat by purchasing stuff that isn't quite grown in a food-factory sort of way.

Yeah.

It's hard to stock up on things when they are cheap, because you only have so much room in your knapsack and its a 30 minute walk home.

57 cents a pound for banana's? where? Superstore is 64 cents, safeway and save on pushing 80 cents...
