Even Mario and Zelda games don't have helpless damsels any more, as Peach and Zelda are now significant characters to the games (Peach as a significant ally to Mario, and occasionally playable character, Zelda mainly as a significant ally).

Games generally don't have the puerile approach to women as strippers that they did in the days of Duke Nukem 3D. Nowadays when they are featured it's usually in the role of crime games where they might be witnesses (or potential witnesses in the case of Hitman games), informants, victims, undercover cops. They aren't there to please sexual urges.

Females wearing light clothing in fighting games? That's because light clothing is what is actually recommended in fighting sports. Sure you can argue that many are somewhat sexualised, but you can't deny that the male characters get the same treatment too.

Gaming doesn't hate Sarkeesian because they're afraid of change, they hate her because she is a defamatory liar.

I have no horse in this race, but I would gladly explain why OoT is not a damsel in distress story, though it appears to be. Shortly after Zelda is supposedly kidnapped, Link pulls the matter sword from its pedestal and ages 7 years. One of the first people he meets in the future is Sheik, a gender-ambiguous badass who is essentially a ninja. Sheik helps Link along in his quest until the endgame, when it is revealed that Sheik has been Zelda all along. She needed Link to become powerful enough to be her equal, and now that both of them control one of the pieces of the triforce, they can finally defeat Ganon.

In some of the previous Zelda games she is indeed a damsel in distress, but she's often more a participant in the quest than a generic kidnapped female. OoT was probably the worst example to pull from the series.

At this point it's just nice the circlejerk cancels itself out by down voting and GG discussions into oblivion. Which is ironic because their last battle cry has been "we just want honest discourse" but just prove they can't handle it when they brigade anyone with a differing opinion. I honestly couldn't give two shits about the entire fiasco. But it's like a train wreck you have to watch on your way to cute cat pictures and threads ripping Uwe Boll. If they realized how embarrassingly childish (and occasionally dangerous) their reactions to Sarkeesian are, regardless of anything she said, they might figure out why everyone who reads anything about gamergate that isn't a gamer thinks their fucking idiots. But they'll never get it. And they'll continue to make gaming as a whole look like a misogynistic mess, proving her terribly made and ill informed points for her. Slow clap, congratulations, blah blah blah. Fucking children.
