Remember kids, if it's not sashimi or nigiri, people will look down on you for it.

Exactly! It get's a little frustrating. I like what I like, you like what you like.

Never understood why people on reddit take food so seriously. Absolute garbage food can taste good, just enjoy it it all people.

Edit: Soft shell crab is my favorite summer food, and I haven't had a spider roll in forever. Very jealous OP.

The reason it bugs me is because this is what most people now think as sushi.

It's amusing to me that Americans have taken something delicious and simple like sushi and made it into something completely different. Whereas sushi has traditionally been about fish and rice it has now become something covered in sauce and a bunch of other fried bits and pieces. Obviously my preference is for simple sushi... nigiri and simple rolls is all I ever order. Recently I was in a sushi bar outside of LA and I sat at the bar and the sushi chef said to me "no sauce", meaning don't use any soy. I had asked him to choose items for me and I sat right in front of him so I used no soy for anything the rest of the meal. He lightly seasoned the pieces with salt, sometimes a light soy based sauce. It was fantastic. It opened my eyes to what sushi is really all about (in my mind) which is tasting the different varieties of the fish and the simple seasonings that can bring out different flavors and combine to create sushi magic. Even the simple nigiri pieces I usually order I had been changing by applying soy sauce. To me the heavy mayo based sauces, the sweet sauces do not allow the flavor of fish to come through. I'm not saying it's wrong it's just very different from what I consider to be a good sushi meal and I find it kind've sad that the general population seems to think that that's what sushi is (some crazy roll) and won't allow themselves or even be aware of the real experience.

Edit: I should add that I do indeed like all kinds of food. I love high end, I love down and dirty street food, taquerias, pastrami, pizza, burgers, fried chicken, barbecue... all of it.

This comment makes you sound like a whiny, pretentious snob. Why should you even begin to care what other people like to eat? As long as you have nigiri on your plate, why does it matter what the person on the other side of the restaurant has on theirs?

Before I went out to sushi yesterday, I had only ever tried "traditional" sushi. I decided to have some fun by ordering a roll that had been deep fried and covered in sauces. It was delicious, in its own unique way, and guess what! My plate of sashimi didn't disappear into a black hole just because I ate some Americanized sushi. Your preferred sushi is not going to stop existing, and you aren't better than someone who eats crazy rolls. It's just food.

Too bad those crazy rolls are like $13 a pop... or more :(

[–]EstherandThyme -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah, mine was $12. I would get it again though as long as I had someone to eat it with! Boyfriend is generally not a seafood fan and somewhat squeamish with new food, so I had to tackle that beast all by myself.

I don't get sushi often so if I were to get a roll like that I'd probably tackle it on my own too haha. I remember having one a few years back which had spicy tuna, salmon, avocado and some mayo based sauce and tempura fried. I was in heaven for like $17.

Spicy Tuna still takes the cake as my favorite roll though.

You should relax a little bit. I didn't claim to be or even imply that I'm better than anybody. I merely stated my preference and shared my experience.

[–]EstherandThyme 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Except that you did imply that you were better because you outright said it was "sad" that other people don't eat the same foods you do.

You can pick apart my post all you want. I'm not going to get into a back and forth about what I said and what I meant. Why don't we just both agree that you should fuck off and move on :)
