2) It's not so much the fact that she's white, it's the fact that she's the worst kind of cultural appropriator or as I like to call her: a nigga swagger jacker. She uses black culture to make millions but pays no attention to the history, struggle, and contribution black people have put forth to cultivate everything that is hip hop. She is pre packaged for fame because she is a white woman and much easier for the mainstream (aka other white people) to stomach. So she can adopt a blaccent, run around rubbing on her ass, have shitty first week album sales (which downright pale in comparison to Nicki's) and still get nominated for Grammy's while black artists who are actually deserving of awards for their talents are stiffed. This is the problem many black people have with her. And it is a problem because it's just another example of systematic racism.

Why does no one understand nuance? I have never once said that white people can't rap or have no place in hip-hop because they're white. I have never had a problem with Eminem. Why? Because he knows where hip-hop comes from and he has always been humbled by the fact that he is respected in the game. Iggy embodies the antithesis of Em's behavior . It's not the fact that she's white, it's the fact that she's white and won't acknowledge that her shitty music is only possible because of the black people she rips off. She remains ignorant on purpose and to top it all off, she tweets racist shit and makes it clear that she knows nothing about nor cares about the black community. If you think it's about who is or isn't writing her own music you are totally missing the point. Also, taking white people's money has nothing to do with appropriation, so I literally have no idea why you added that in there.

DUDE. Do not come here trying to tell me that systematic racism doesn't infiltrate everything including Hollywood and the music industry. Hip-hop is just about the only place where we are represented, yet somehow black artists are not winning awards or getting recognition for their talent. That is systematic racism. Who are you to say what merits that title anyway? Everything is white-washed and re-packaged with a white face. You think Justin Timberlake or Sam Smith are doing anything different from other R&B singers? They're not, they just happen to be white so they're easier to market. The same goes for Miley Cyrus (who I want like as a feminist figure, but I just can't support because she tries so damn hard to be black), Justin Bieber, and of course, the Queen of Black Appropriation, Igloo Australia.

It might not matter to you, but it matters to me. I grew up a mixed kid in a white neighborhood and I only went to school with white kids. I seriously thought I'd be so much happier if I looked more like my white dad; I hated my caramel skin and big curly hair. I literally had to go to a diverse college in order to get rid of the self-loathing. The media played a very large role in that self-loathing; I mostly saw white faces with bone straight hair, so I thought that looking like that was the only way to be beautiful and accepted.

So I have a visceral response to this type of shit. It makes me so angry, because I just think about all the other confused little black and brown girls and boys out there. We are subliminally fed the message that being white gets you everywhere, but being black means you get stepped all over and exploited. When I look at Iggy Azalea that's exactly what I see: a white woman exploiting something she knows nothing about, but gets away with it because she's the color that's deemed superior. I know you're never supposed to debate emotionally, but in this case I can't help it. I have very strong feelings about this shit because it fucked me up in the head until I was like 19 years old and was finally able to accept myself.

edit: and what you're not getting is that systematic racism is systematic racism. From Iggy to home loan denial. It all feeds into one big massive system of oppression. You're not going to have 50 white rappers pretending to be from Holly Grove without loan denials to blacks and vice versa. Systematic racism all boils down to the same thing at the end of the day, doesn't matter what form it's in.

I never said it is only for black people; I certainly do not think that. It is for everyone who wants to listen to it or participate in it, I just believe that artists and fans should give credit where it is due. Other white rappers don't have a problem doing that, so why does she? I'm really tired of the whole "well white people make up the majority of America!" thing. Does being the majority mean that you are entitled to rip off of other cultures and people and make money from it? Black culture is the height of cool, and it's gotten re-packaged by the majority, which always seems to happen to minority groups. This shit is so much deeper than good and bad music, so much deeper than hip-hop. It is a form of oppression, though it is more subtle than outright racism. It's also not petty, it sends a powerful subliminal message to minorities, as I stated above. You might have the blinders on, but this shit is 100% real.

On your criticism, which is pretty thoughtful, i still don't see Iggy as significantly different to any other white rapper. And i dont think she's ignorant: someone like q tip comes in and says she is, but he would probably say that about anyone from the south. She knows what she's talking about, and to be honest 90% of the time someone argues that she's ignorant it just seems like misogyny. I've seen a couple of legitimate critcriticisms, but very little that either criticises all white rappers (which i disagree with, but is a viable criticism), or makes a cases for why she is different other than "she's manufactured", which i dony dont think makes her different at all

I am not a sexism denier in any sense of the word; I experience it every day in some small way or another, so I am fully aware of its existence. But sexism isn't really the issue here. Yes, maybe people are a bit more critical of her because she is a woman, but the real problem is her willful ignorance, and trust me, she is ignorant. Idk what you mean by saying Q-Tip would call anyone from the South ignorant (she's not from the South anyway, she's from Australia, which just makes it worse), but he was 100% correct in everything he said in that series of hip-hip history tweets.

She's different from a lot, certainly not all, white rappers because she is so willfully ignorant and defensive when people call her on her bullshit. She tweets racist and homophobic shit and doesn't see a problem with it, she refuses to acknowledge that black and hip hop culture have paved the way for her (total bullshit) career, and she literally gives no fucks about the black community and our struggles at all (after the Mike Brown decision she tweeted "In news that pertains to me..."). She has no idea what she's talking about, because everything she says boils down to "ME ME ME PAY ATTENTION TO ME BUT NOT IN A NEGATIVE WAY." So this really isn't about sexism, it's about her ignorance, which is very much purposeful, and her refusal to pay homage to the people and culture that allows her peddle her stupid ass music in the first place.

I don't know I still don't see it, she tweeted some (admittedly pretty awful) stuff years ago, sure. But I don't think she's lying when she says she grew up with hip hop and that she raps how she is. I don't see her as fake, but what really annoys me is that people who don't know anything about rap come in and think that calling a rapper fake is breaking new ground when, really, accusing rappers of being fake is basically part of the culture. Every rapper has an 'act', and I think the criticism of Iggy's 'act' is overblown. Partly because she's a woman, partly because I don't think she's as ignorant as people make her out to be, and partly because I think a lot of people think they're above pop music or that top 40 pop music has no place in hip hop. Some of it's genuine, sure, and some of it is well-meaning but I think misguided.

Also I wasn't saying the whole issue was about sexism, that was almost a side point to the main issue of 'Azealia Banks will start shit with any rapper'

Look, to detach myself from the actual business of what criticism is valid and what isn't: some people have been arguing that the Beastie Boys and Eminem and all that were offensive. And that's totally ok, I don't know if I completely agree, but that's a tenable position. If that's where you stand, I completely respect that.

But, people are uniquely harsh on Iggy, people bring out arguments with iggy that they'd never bring out with anyone else. Take the one that started this whole thing as an example: 'if you hear her spit vs. hear her talk, it's worlds different'. I could say the same shit about KRS-One doing a Jamaican accent. People act like that's some sort of highbrow racial criticism when it's no different to 'Rick Ross used to be a prison guard hahaha what a fake'.

EDIT: Actually when I was writing that I realised what the real heart of my problem with people criticising Iggy is: people who are ignorant of hip hop accuse Iggy of being ignorant of hip hop for putting on some sort of act, when putting on an act has been a part of hip hop since the beginning. To me, either you think that all hip hop acts are 'black' acts, and so any white person doing it is basically in blackface, or you can't really criticise Iggy's act on the basis of race because her act, which isn't unique, isn't 'owned' by black people unless you believe all hip hop is

From what I understand, many black people hate Iggy cause she gets way more credit than she deserves. Sure her shits catchy, but in no way does she deserve a grammy IMO. Rap and hip hop are black culture and they use it to discuss the struggles of daily life on the streets. Iggy doesn't know about any of that. Her music is shallow like she doesn't have much to say. Then why does she have a grammy while female rappers are snubbed like Nitty Scott or, -hell, even Nicki is better than her (even if she is a crazy bitch).

My point is is that white rappers usually are more successful because white people can relate with them and understand them. When Kendrick's M.A.A.D. City album came out I remember playing it in my car and having my friend ask what the kids were saying and I had to translate to "white people speak" what they were saying. After a few more plays, she started to get the hang of their slang. A week later she was hooked; she realized what a beautiful and sad story Kendrick it telling throughout his album. While Macklmore is not bad and told his own struggles and story, I think Kendrick's storytelling, lyrics and flow was way more powerful yet Macklmore still won the grammy. Not trynna shit on white rappers, its just that this shit happens too much IMO.
