Germaine Greer Tells Cambridge University Students: Transphobia Doesn't Exist

Germaine Greer faced the wrath of angry students after claiming transphobia doesn't exist during a highly-contested talk at Cambridge University.
Greer spoke to an audience at debating society The Cambridge Union, and condemned Harriet Harman MP, saying she was "bound to get the wrong end of the stick" as "I’ve taught women fifty times clever than she is".
Her anger at gender stereotyping was initially directed at the "hoards of feminist journalists" who were "too stupid" to understand wider issues. Greer also criticised the Everyday Sexism campaign, saying it made misogyny sexy.

CUSU's Women Campaign opposed Greer's appearance at the Union, saying: "Greer does not represent feminism, and she does not represent us."

Transphobia soon became a target of Greer's speech: "Women are 51% of the world’s population and [I’ve been told] I’ve got to worry about transphobia".
She continued: "I didn’t know there was such a thing [as transphobia]. Arachnaphobia, yes. Transphobia, no.”
Greer's opinions of transgender people are well known - in her book The Whole Woman, Greer described trans women as "men who believe that they are women and have had themselves castrated".
According to Greer, the actions of transgender people are counteracting today's attempts to defeat stereotypes about women. She insists you cannot be a woman because you "want" to be: "There’s a hardship about being a woman...I always wanted to be a Jew, but I can’t be."
Never one to steer clear of controversy, Greer called gender polarity "a delusion, it's a form of body dysmorphia". She called the surgery needed for the transitioning process "unethical" because of the dependence on medication it inevitably creates.
As students responded angrily to her comments, Greer felt the need to defend herself in the debate, insisting transgender people are "the ones throwing stuff at me".
Cambridge University's LGBT+ Campaign boycotted the event, insisting: "The campaign will no longer hold events at the Union until such time as the Union introduces a policy of not inviting those with a history of hate speech."
Robin Cumming, CUSU LGBT+'s Transgender and Intersex Rep, told HuffPost UK: "We felt that to invite Germaine Greer back to speak in Cambridge after her actions against Rachael Padman and given her wider transmisogynistic stance was to sweep these things under the carpet and, as such, implicitly condone them by failing to take a stand against them."
Greer left Cambridge University in 1996, abandoning her lecturing position at Newnham College after campaigning against the election of a transgender fellow, Rachael Padman. Numerous current students expressed their unwillingness to have her back.
Student Em Travis wrote in favour of the boycott for Cambridge's LGBT+ magazine, Get Real. They described Greer's views as "twisted and misinformed", adding: "I do not want to share a building with Germaine Greer. I don’t particularly want to share a city or even a planet with her, for that matter, or with any other person who contributes to the marginalisation, oppression, and death of my trans siblings."
The society organised an alternative event to "discuss the history of trans feminism, and think through how feminism can be made more trans-inclusive" with trans feminist activist, Roz Kaveney, as guest speaker.
The LGBT+ and Women's Campaign also distributed leaflets about Greer's history of transmisogyny outside the Union before her talk.

Good to see Germaine Greer still on form. You may not agree with her but at least she is prepared to state what she believes, and defend it. On this topic I believe she is undeniably correct. Shame about the Cambridge luvvies getting their panties in a twist. Listen to Greer and learn.

You believe she is correct.... I believe you are a waste of breathable air and are the human equivalent of dog sh/t. Maybe if you didn't listen to greer and listened to those who actually knew about the topic she was spouting off about...you might actually learn something correct and not the opinion of a deluded maniac.

I disagree with Greer however her views on Transsexuals are not untypical amongst many feminists. Many of them hate the idea of men (at least physically) becoming (physically) women. As far as they are concerned men are the 'enemy' of women and Transsexuals who change their physical gender from men to women, are still men. This is particularly an issue amongst the 'LGBT' community. What was once the "Gay" rights movement split along gender lines in the late 1980's/early 1990's due to feminist infiltrators. "Gay" became "lesbian and gay" as they wished to differentiate women from men. Their new target isn't sexual orientation, but gender identity. They simply 'hate' what they perceive as men identifying as women. As a lawyer specialising in human rights, I've seen this time and time again. A "Dyke" (popular term for gay women wit...hin the feminist fraternity - 'lesbian' is no longer radical enough) Pride march was organised a couple years ago explicitly banning Transsexuals. On their Facebook Page they used references to genitalia (or former genitalia) as their excuse. "Born with a Penis, always a Penis" was a regular comment. I took up the case of many Transsexuals who were rightly offended and the march was banned by the local authority on discrimination grounds. However the "LGBT+" (add as many letters as you wish) organisations have a lot to answer for. What was once a united front for civil right under the "Gay" movement is now one of the most fragmented. Imagine the Black civil right movement fragmenting into different 'skin tones', well welcome the current LGBTIQ.....etc., etc. one. Feminism has its place for advocating gender equality but has, like Greer, become inflamed by radical gender fascism which, sadly, many "gay" civil rights advocates have failed to effectively eliminate. Thanks for sharing what, to me at least, was a fascinating insight. I guess we forget that just because someone is part of a group who are discriminated against, that doesn't mean they don't discriminate themselves. I was very surprised recently to find out how many gay men are misogynists. That's the problem of living in a world that focuses on sexuality more than personality, I suppose, we ignore the bigger issues. There was no mention in the article, or your response, about female to male transitions. Are they often victims of the same hatred?

Teresa Fowler Thanks Teresa for replying. I quoted the MTF (male to female) experience due to the article concerning Greer. You are absolutely correct to highlight that 'transitioning' gender also goes the other way.

I like to think that as a 'straight' man who has spent 25 years covering "gay" or "LGBT" rights as a lawyer that my comments are less 'partisan'. Indeed they are based on my own personal experience so shouldn't be taken as anything other than 'opinion'.

Apart from my legal profession I am also a historian and have done considerable research into the whole 'gay' rights movement from the 1960's.

What began as a quite 'unifying' force, particularly around the sexual liberation movement in the 1960's and Gay Rights Movement of the 1970's has become incredibly fragmented.

As far as I am concerned, and only based on my own experience, that 'movement' is now one of the most divided. Entirely based on compartmentalisation amongst a community that ought to be united.

"LGBT" means nothing to me in the way "Black, Brown, Tan, Yellow, White..etc." meant nothing to the Black Civil Rights Movement.

Until we drop "LGBT" and return to "Gay", the movement will continue to split along gender and sexual orientation grounds.

This is always the story of crazy movements. Red on red, as the right on radical of yesterday becomes the reactionary heretic of today.
