In all honesty, I'm fucking jealous that a guy can just be himself on the internet and make millions. He's a weird dude and I can't finish any of his videos but I respect the fact that he made it into an incredible source of income.

Be himself

It's really not... It's a persona. He doesn't go around screaming at everything like the idiot he is on camera

Jack from Achievement Hunter once said that when he and the other achievement hunters do videos they don't really act like themselves. They portray themselves. They're flanderizations, exaggerations or caricatures of themselves when they're on camera.

Stupid sexy flanderizations!

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (1子コメント)

It used to be a bit different.

I've heard every single Podcast since the start, and they all had the same personality and talking 'style' (idk how to word that) as they did in videos and let's plays.

Nowadays, they are more sporadic and obnoxious with random jokes and sex puns and memes because that's what makes them more money. Kids watch them now and have NO attention spans so they need quick constant silly stupid things to hold their gaze.

CAAAAKKEEEEEE

420BLAZEIT

Yep, kids definitely watch them more

I think Ray also said on Internet Box (rip) that the fans also create a persona for them that they try to portray because it makes for better videos. It's crazy to think that these guys are acting like that but hey, it gets views and I like it.

Just like Facebook, or any other social media for that matter.

Yeah. The easiest example is gavin. While his normal self may be a little stupid/silly sometimes, he clearly exaggerates it for videos.

I would assume it's true of anyone in reality media (reality tv, podcasts, etc...), I expect it's probably also true for people who are deemed more serious (science ambassadors or documentary commentators for example) although in a different way.

Obviously Ray is a flanderization, Michael maybe a little less, Geoff I cant tell, Jack probably a little, Ryan certainly a ton.

I think Gavin is the only one who doesnt have a persona.

Gavin's persona is lovable dumbass. I'm pretty sure he's not that stupid in real life.

I can imagine he isnt that stupid, but some of his podcast stories say otherwise

I saw him interviewed on something and it weirded me out because he was acting as normal as you could expect a Swedish person to act.

Which pisses me off. I've seen some of his non-Let's Play videos and he's an intelligent, mature, wonderful person. And then he acts like a fucking retard who I could never possibly enjoy watching, screaming at the slightest thing for the entertainment of five year olds.

There is no one "self", for anyone.

Who we are with our best friend is different from who we are with our coworkers, or our wife, or when we're all alone.

All media personalities have their "on air self", which includes a certain voice and a certain way of acting. Do you think Jon Stewart talks to his kids in the same way that he hosts the Daily Show?

That doesn't mean it's an act. It's that depending on the context, you magnify some aspects of your personality and minimize others.

In his gameplay videos he's fooling around, but he also does those vlogs where he is being more sincere.

Most importantly he's sincere enough. No doubt it's exaggerated and at this point it's been going on for so long I would imagine he has trouble keeping up the image he has created for himself and as a result his videos become more fake as he matures.

And you know this how?

Well you really have no idea. But lets make assumptions anyway.

He doesn't act like that, of course he's exaggerating. But calling it a persona is too much. It's not like he says or acts in any way he wouldn't. Of course, he's constantly making jokes and trying to make people laugh, because that's kind of his thing. But trying to be funny on purpose doesn't mean having a persona.

What bothers me is: Why the hell is he so popular? Good for him that he can be himself and many love him. But why is he so successful while so many other great people aren't even close, nor will they ever will be?

Kids have A LOT of spare time. Its like watching your older brother play video games. Its always been popular, but only til Youtube arrived is when you can make money off of it.

That might be the best explanation so far.

It still baffles me that my younger sister would rather watch other people playing Minecraft instead of playing it herself.

Kids have A LOT of spare time.

Which is why I suspect these fucking grind-fest collectathons are such popular games nowadays.

Yup, this is a perfect explanation. I remember when I was a kid, I went over to my older cousin's house frequently to watch him play all the violent and scary games on his PC.

But...People only watch their older brother play games because they don't have their own PC/console, and the older brother always got what he wanted - which was, most of the time, playing games himself instead of letting the annoying little sibling play. So my question is, why, if so many people now have their own PC/console, which they use to look at youtube videos of some guy playing a game, do they still want to watch someone play a game? They can play it themselves with not much effort.

Maybe they watch him play games which their parents don't allow them to play. I know many families who tried to hide "dangerous" games from their children. They always had a heart attack when playing on my PC.

They might not own some of the games (considering how bucketloads of new releases are 60bucks EACH, to a kid), or are just not skilled enough to play some of them (Noticed I said some).

I pirated all my games till I was old enough to work and buy them.

I'm super lazy, I own something like 500 games on steam. I like watching games being played by other people despite me owning it already. I can basically get the same experience as playing, except I can pause and come back anytime and skip parts I don't like.

It's not that I don't have the games they're playing, it's that it's fun to watch people do stuff I like. It's not much different than watching a regular TV show, other than there's not much of a sudden script

so that explains it. Every popular product or entertainment has some freudian aspect to it.

Never had a brother to watch play video games. YouTube has been a good substitute for what I missed.

This is the part I can't understand either. I accept that he's a big deal, I just simply don't know why.

tl;dr completely by chance

But hey! That's just a theory

A game theory!

In this case though I don't think it is lol. I mean, if it's just a theory, it would mean he is rather bad at his job XD

That amazingly informative.

My god, that video is annoying.

Right timing and execution.

Well the thing is his audience is the majority of YouTube.

Kids love this shit. Just like you loved stupid shit when you were little as well.

And that is why we are not his target demographic.

I would think I am his target demographic. Maybe I'm a little bit older. Then again, he's been around about three years, and I've never liked his stuff very much. You like what you like, I guess.

Because no one likes to watch the people who emit the, "I'm better than everyone but I just haven't made it." And put off some bland humor that signifies their superior sense of identity.

I used to host edm events and failed horribly because of this. The successful people were the ones who kept the business behind the curtains and when showtime came around they were just there to party and enjoy music as well.

Appeals to the lowest common denominator. I hate his persona personally. =p

Because kids think he is RDJ like character. They wish they could be that cool. Reddit constantly hypes everything from cute not so good musician/actress to people who are half decent at their jobs but look cool.

Kids just have different idea of what being cool adult is like, and it's what they are plus good looks, popularity and wit.

I'm going to guess English isn't your mother tongue. I do sort of get what you mean though. But I also think people shouldn't be roped into demographics like they all think the same way or have the same interests. I still consider myself a kid and I've never really appreciated content like his, or succumbed to sensationalism of undeserving celebrities.

There's a Game Theory vid about it

I don't know about you, but I was into some pretty stupid shit when I was 12-15. Can't really blame kids for being into this shit.

The weird thing is, I know people who love his videos and are 18 or even older. Might have something to do with them not being native English speakers, and PDP's English isn't that great either, so it's easy for them to understand.

Wait, so if I suck at a language and speak it I am easy to understand to other people who suck at this language?

yes, sort of.

I'm english, 19, and know a ton of people my age who watch him. Some people just like his humour. There's nothing mysterious about it. People think he's funny, so people are going to watch him.

I know a guy, completely normal, very mature 24 years old and he watches his videos. It's kind of beyond me.

I want to say he has shit taste in humor but he laughs at my jokes.

I can't blame kids for being into anything after I bought Vanilla Ice's To The Extreme cassette back when it dropped in 1990. My poor parents.

Ha that's extremely unfortunate for your folks, but now look at you with your (probably) good taste in shit.

But did you also have a pair of z cavariccis that you wore while you danced to that shit smelling like 5 bucks with that fresh coat of drakkar noir? Yeah me too :(

idk /r/homestarrrunner held up pretty well... but thats about it

I haven't watched it in years and years. I'm guessing if it were to hold up for me it'd probably have a lot to do with my love of the characters.

Pretty sure I've listened to every video of his. My college roommate, who was 28, loved his videos and watched them day and night without headphones. We shared a room :(

Marketability. He's good looking, he's quirky, and he presents himself in an engaging way. This all only applies to his target audience of course, but it doesn't hurt people outside of this demographic, as he is so inoffensive.

I can't stand him. I also don't enjoy Taylor Swift.

Now that you mention it ... what seems insane today, but everyone loved it 10-15 years ago? What's the equivalent to his videos?

It's just how youtube works, no other way to explain it

There's a video somewhere on YouTube by some gaming theorist where they explain that he basically accidentally abused YouTube's system and became extremely popular because he moved like 3 times.

Ive seriously only had girls tell me that they watch this guy's channel

Game Theory did an excellent video on it that gives a great explanation as to the reasons why his audience might be so large. It's right here, it's worth a watch even if you don't like Game Theory.

I think it was just luck and he probably got a lot of viewers from stuff like his amnesia videos. Once that YouTube ball starts rolling it's hard to stop. Same goes for streamers now. You see them with around 100-300 viewers on average and all they need is one broadcast with some bigger streamer to really take off.

the way youtube works is popularity breeds popularity. he was just doing it long enough. i once watched a horror lets play and youtube didnt stop harassing me with his videos as "suggestions" till i found a script to completely block his videos from even showing up.

Yup I'm right with you.

I saw his videos and would have accepted being jealous for him doing something I didn't think of first, or being that funny guy at the party but doing it in a different context.

But he's not.

He's that weird kid in school that is going through a strange phase.

20 years ago he would have developed a social anxiety but he's famous. I don't understand why, I don't understand his jokes.

My theory is:

  1. He made video games videos when there wasn't too much competition. Video games are popular.
  2. He has a distinct personality and attempts to seem friendly. This seems obvious but some people fail at this.
  3. His video and audio quality are decent.
  4. He makes eye catching or weird thumbnails.
  5. He made a lot of videos consistently. Once again it seems obvious but many people fail at this step.
  6. Some luck.

Sometimes simple ideas work the best.

I think he just broke the mold for many Let's Players. They typically don't do weird offensive shit and being unique was a thing. IM sOOoooOo0oO r4ndumb lollzorz .!!!!!™

He joined youtube and started at the just the right time. The fact he moved while you tubing helped him get views tremendously, and the main thing that got him there is lucky timing. I believe someone posted the link to a video explaining it, I'm currently on mobile so it's hard to pull links

Children with an Internet connection. Thats how..

Right time and right shtick. It doesn't hurt that every kid in America practically has an iphone/ipad shoved at them by their parents in order to shut them up.

It has to do with how youtube works. When you start a channel it shows it to people locally in the recommended videos. In his case Sweden. After getting popular there he then went to Italy to be with his girlfriend. So youtube was showing his videos to people in Sweden and Italy. And since he was so popular in two countries youtube started expanding where he was recommended until he hit #1. Then he was global.

He's popular because he appeals to the younger demographic. The same reason seananners, skydoes mine craft and other channels meant for younger audiences

One reason is he started making videos when he was in Sweden. Because of the way YouTube works it's hard to get views from other regions. When he moved he already had a lot of subscribers from Europe; so YouTubes algorithms gave him a lot more exposure than others.

Edit: or not... Video where I first heard this and pewdie's response

The first part is just going to be a bit of luck then once you hit say 100,000 subs then you start getting featured on more related videos until it just starts to snowball.

I concider myself as not a dumb person but I enjoy his videos. It's a good and jolly entertainment and sometimes even funny/smart. I bet he does feel the curse of having a target demographic below his own sense of humour but as an entertainer he can pull out this crazy persona to please the crowd. If he was himself, people wouldn't watch it as much...

Because children don't want great people. They want entertainment.

I guess there is an idiotic part in each of us, but on the other hand not everyone can appreciate greatness.

Think of it this way: he makes a group of about 35 million people happy on a daily basis. In my opinion this ia a very good thing. We just happen to not be part of this group.

Maybe you support that one YouTuber that has just around 100 fans. But his videos make you happy and he's happy that you are subscribed to him.

Don't focus on hating the things you don't like, but on loving the things you do like. It's win-win for everyone.

Hey, don't worry, I'm not one to scream that he's cancer and AIDS combined, or that I want to smash his skull with a brick. I was just, how do you call it in English ... flabbergasted?

Ok, I see what you meant to say.

BTW: thanks for "flabbergasted". This is so going into my regular vocabulary.

One of the perks of being a non-native English speaker - you always find words no one would ever use.

that's the way the world works.

Most people aren't 'great' so they won feel identified by someone 'great'.

I find his videos funny. Obviously that's not the popular opinion on this thread. What bothers me is why so many people care? I mean he makes me laugh, he makes other people laugh, and that should really be all that matters. If he doesn't make others laugh then all they have to do is not watch his videos.

The same reason my son thinks Sky from the Skydoesminecraft videos is the funniest guy in the world. He is just a guy streaming minecraft with his friends but the video targets everything my son loves. Minecraft? Check. Silly jokes on the topic of minecraft? Check. Mild profanity? Check. My son feels like he has a connection to sky because the content is in his wheel house. He could be watching the constant stream of reality shit on television, so I'm happy he chooses to watch this stuff.

hes not being himself. watch his pneumbra and amnesia dark descent videos

It's so strange to watch those. No cam, serious-ish game play... If I recall correctly, in his Dark Descent playthrough, he said something about not liking cheap jokes while playing horror games because it takes away from the experience.

yeah i remember that too. it was nice watching the videos because he actually played the game and just talked to us, not screamed

I remember watching those and I thoroughly enjoyed them, he is a genuinely funny person and those videos were entertaining to me. But it's like now he's caught in a loop where if he changes his style back from what it is now he'd lose a whole bunch of business.

yep. he makes so much god dam money hes just going to stick with what works. when he played pneumbra, it seemed like he was legitimately freaked out. now it seems so forced

It would take an offer of at least $10k for me to ever watch one of his videos.

just watch them. youll see what i mean

I'd rather jam a screw driver up my urethra.

i mean, you cant really say that without watching them. the reason im saying you should watcht the early videos is because of the stark contract between those early ones and the ones know. before he sold out to 12 year olds

You know he screamed a lot more back then than he does now... All that's mostly changed is his editing skills and decision making on what games to play.

None of you seem to get what being a youtube persona is about. He's not pretending to be anything or putting on an act for kids. Its his channel persona. He has plenty of vids showing himself in public and with other people, that's how he is. During playthroughs, he just behaves in a different manner to address an audience. Look at tv hosts, Conan for example, no one ever says he's all an act and he's not like that off stage. Of course he's more tuned down off stage but that doesn't mean his humor is any different. People forget youtube personalities are almost the same as tv hosts.

I think this might be the most honest comment here.

As enough other people already pointed out but to repeat it. He actually is quite the collected person. His youtube persona is something he does for money. He's actually a cool guy, but i can't stand his persona the least bit.

I think that he made some really popular Amnesia vids and this was around 2010 when this whole let's play thing really picked up.

Am 23 and if you look passed his screaming and annoying sounds, he is actually quite funny and is a very nice dude. The only reason I keep watching is because his videos make me smile like a small kid which I really love.

If you really have the desire to finish one, try his Heavy Rain or Last of Us play through. I started with those from him and then was shocked when I started watching his other stuff. Granted he's still annoying, but more bearable.

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)
