Man...his target demographic isn't even old enough to buy this game themselves...

His target demographic watches him play games that they aren't old enough for all the time.

That doesn't help the devs or the publisher if they can't buy the game, I mean a huge amount will just buy it from somewhere that won't ask questions, get their parents to buy it or get it online, but still.

I'm not sure what makes reddit so super conservative.

Have you never been 13? You'd be hard-pressed to find a parent that gives a shit about what their children plays. And if they do, they're likely the crazy super religious parents.

9 out of 10 thirteen-year olds will have no problem buying the latest GTA game with their own cash money.

Can confirm, had super religious parents lol. All my friends parents never even gave a damn or paid any attention to what a game was rated so I just played them at their house.

My friends just bought me videogames. Had to take the disks out of my WoW:BC box and smuggle them in in a DVD case.

Now my brother's 13, the same age I was when that happened, and our parents buy him stuff like Assassin's Creed: Unity and Diablo 3. It's like they just don't care anymore.

Wow, that's like a slap in the face for you lol. I feel kinda bad because they made it so hard on you and then are like "meh fuck it" now.

My parents always moderated what games I play, till I was maybe 16 or 17. My brother is now 15 and they're like "what ever floats your boat, new cod? Sure. Saint's row? Why not." I can definitely agree with the sentiment that parents get less strict with every successive child, it's probably due to the confidence of having not killed the first child yet.

My nephews were allowed to get whatever game they wanted, until they played Fallout 3. While I was over for one of the holidays they were playing it on the big screen. That was, until they talked to the "Doctor" at Megaton and he said:

"You best have cancer, because of the look of it, you're breaking rule number one."

While their grandmother, currently undergoing chemo, dropped her coffee cup in shock.

"That's it! No more" - and suddenly all the games were screened.

I never had much interest in violent video games so the first Mature game I played was one my 12 year old brother bought (Battlefield 4). That being said my parents took a lot of convincing to get that game and still won't let him get GTA V.

Yeah for me I only really wanted to play games like Halo and Battlefield and what not. Was never really a GTA fan. When I got a little older my mother was ok with me buying M games so long as it didn't have crazy gore like GoW or sexual stuff like GTA.

I was lucky to have a young-ish mom so to her video games were just games. Not the Devils playground.

Eh my mother wasn't that crazy about it. Just didn't like excessive gore and any form of nudity. She just didn't want me exposed to it at a young age. She was never one of those "that's the devils work!" religious types. Besides my dad was gamer so it was hard for her to hate on my pastime, even if she wanted to lol.

Once I got old enough to buy games for myself she was like "you're old enough to make your own decisions, even if I still have my opinions".

lol.

I have to imagine that gamer parents may have more insight and understand what their kids are playing, as that is what makes me aware of what my kids play, I certainly am not super religious, merely informed.

Many will blindly respect the ratings. My aunt wouldn't let my cousin play guitar hero since it is rated m (for mature language i.e. lyrics) though she'd have let him listen to any of the songs that were in the game.

Parent here. You write just be. Not your mother and your friends' apparently, but there are parents that care. Here is one

I was allowed to buy PEGI rated 18+ games when I turned 17. The only reason why they let me do that was because most of the 18+ games are rated M17+ in America. God bless we have Steam though! Got my games from there and they didn't even know what Steam is, until now. My mom has a Steam account now.

I nearly wasn't allowed to buy Destroy All Humans 2 when I was 15... some parents take those age ratings really god damn seriously.

I was 15 when the first came out and wasn't allowed to buy it since it involved killing humans. Halo, CoD, and GTA were just fine though.

Wait.... what?

I'm not sure how things are now, but I worked in both Gamestop and Electronics Boutique back in the day and we carded everyone for M-rated games as store policy. Obviously this isn't enforced everywhere and there's always online purchase or download. My point is just that a kid walking into a retail location to buy this might have a harder time.

lulz, my dad was super crazy religious and batshit crazy.

Sonic and Super Smash Bros were too violent.

Zelda Ocarina of Time had a song to some goddess, he tripped out and said we couldn't be at our friend's house anymore until he got rid of the game.

Echo the Dolphin (old sega game), evil.

Pokemon? Demons (though he let us play it for about a year before changing his mind).

Mario was hit or miss. Anything with weapons, forget it.

He also had to play through the whole game before he would let us have it, just to make sure there was nothing evil that might make us worship Satan.

As a matter of fact, most games were evil and trying to get us to worship Satan. And if I happened to enjoy a game, he would take it away because that meant there was something wrong with it.

Santa was Satan as well (he wrote letters about it).

Lord of the Rings was OK though. And Veggie Tales...

You can't really blame them either. I can't really remember all about whet it was like being thirteen but I do remember wanting to be older so I could buy video games and drive. Everyone plays whatever games they want. No matter what age. Btw esrb is just a suggestion if I am not mistaking.

I would say they do care but they don't pay attention to the games they buy. Then they cause a fuss about the fact their kid is getting head in 1st person mode. That could be a loud minority though.

That's part of the problem with parenting these days. Many parents don't parent let's their kids do what they want. There are reasons games like this are for older kids. Religion has nothing to do with it. I'm an atheist and I would not let my 13 play this. Maybe I'll be down voted to oblivion but it's how I feel.

I had to beg my parents at 12 to let be buy Metroid Prime 2, and they were pissed when a family friend let us watch Spiderman when I was about the same age. Though by the time I was 15 or so they didn't give a shit.

Oh also they weren't religious at all

Didn't have super religious parents, still monitored my game content; when I was older they would asked me questions about the games that my brother wanted to buy. Sometime parents just do their jobs, sometimes parents don't.

My parents did, but they still bought these games because they knew I was mature enough to understand that violent behavior is socially unnaceptable. Bad parenting + violent games certainly aren't enough to make someone a sociopath murder, but I'm pretty sure they're enough to create your typical internet trolls that plague multiplayer games and image boards, or in a worse case, people who think swatting is funny.

When I worked retail, I used to delight in letting parents know what content GTA had if the kids were being little shits. Once they hit teenagers, it was mostly all bets off, but kids under 12 usually had parents that were somewhat interested in what content games had.

The main problem, which is now changing due to gamers growing up and having kids of their own, is parents weren't comprehending that games had actual real mature content. They'd see an M rating and think it was no worse than the latest action movie with guys getting cut down in a hail of bullets (which isn't exactly great, but is definitely more accepted). Let them know that the game contains drug use, hookers, etc. and you could get their attention. It was hard for people that didn't play video games to reconcile every game wasn't Super Mario Bros., Sonic, or Pac-Man.

As a gamer myself I would care what my kids played

I was 11 when GTA 3 launched and my dad refused to let me get the game. It was not till the GTA Trilogy (Grand Theft Auto III/ Grand Theft Auto: Vice City / Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas) that I convinced my dad to let me play GTA.

There are some decent parents out there that care what their kids play.

It's not so much being conservative as making sure the people who play these games fully understand the decisions they make, which very few pre-teens do. If anything I would be much happier with a parent willing to play GTA with their child, so they could answer questions and talk to them about it, than a child buying it himself with his own money, and playing is secretly.

Every kid is different, and some 13 year olds understand well enough to know that GTA is satire. But these kid's are all learning and maturing at different speeds. I sure has hell don't want to be the parent that taught all the local boys about how much a blowjob costs on GTA.

Umm reddit is super liberal. You must be a huge fucking idiot.

In the uk I've found gamestation rarely ask for I.D and don't care whilst game are kinda strict and ask for I.D

Eh, my parents aren't super religious, but I had to get special permission to get a 'T' rated game before I was 13. I never got anything bad, I just wanted Super Smash Bros. and Metroid Prime, but they checked up on it before I got it. By the time I got interested in any M games, I was already a Junior in highschool, so I could get them myself.

My parents weren't crazy religious, but they are very conservative. They wouldn't let me have any shooting games because "It's killing people. How could you enjoy that?" Stupidest shit ever. The only reason I ever got a Halo was because I told them it was only robot aliens fighting, not humans!

Also, I started just buying the shit myself, and whenever they walk in on me playing Saints Row busting people over the face with 3-foot-long purple dildos I just stare them straight in the eyes and assert dominance.

My parents aren't super religious, but I wasn't allowed to play Halo or GTA when all my friends were. They said it was because I have little brothers, and they might see me play it. I had to wait until I was 16, and now my 12 year old brother plays whatever he wants.

So I guess I'm the exception. I'm 22 now, but I feel like I missed out.

Thats simply incorrect, many parents of friends of mine at that age knew what their kids bought and would actually pay attention to them while they played, but that was 5 years ago, so what do I know?

After church when I was 9 my sister and I would go to pap and gram's house for lunch and to play Doom and Wolfenstien 3d on pap's computer. I am pretty sure everyone (unless they had extremely strict parents) played M rated games way before they were 17-18.

I used to work in GAME, and you may or may not be surprised at how many parents who would blindly ask for copies of GTA IV (most called it GTA eye vee, and were astonished IV was supposed to be a 4) without realising it had a massive 18 age restriction sticker on it. One woman had a go at me for not selling it to her clearly underage son. When I asked her if she had £5000 to give to me, she got even more pissy. Then I explained I'd be liable for up to £5000 in a fine and loss of job, she got even angrier. I then refused service on grounds she was being an insufferable arse. Lovely lady.
