I checked this guy out once, two seconds into every intro he says "hey bros is PRUUUHHHTY PAAAH"

That sets the tone for his videos

The guy knows his audience

As much as I can't stand his videos, he's a very smart businessman

Yeah, I'm kind of jealous of how much money the guy makes. I'd be happy with making half as much as him. Even 1/8

He made 4 million 2013 or something

Just from YouTube videos? Or does he do other things too. I genuinely don't know much about what he does.

He has over 35 million subscribers and over 7.6 billion views, he is employed by Maker Studios which Disney bought for $950 million-$1.1 billion.

That's not true. Game companies pay him to play their games. At the beginning of 2014, 20 minutes of aired play cost $50,000. I believe he's raised his rates since then.

There's really no reason you couldn't It's really hard work but very possible. You learn video editing and get some graphic skills and make some videos. You can try making a bunch on different topics and have your friends watch them to see what gets the best response. They will share what they like. The main thing is you have to really enjoy making whatever you are making.
Twitch is another option. If you can be charismatic and interesting as you play a game you will have no problem getting followers.

Doesn't take a lot of business savvy to know your audience is made of retarded people, kids and retarded kids, and act accordingly

If all he did was act like an idiot, that'd be one thing, but it's not. His persona is very carefully crafted and he's made a point of choosing games his potential audience wants to see him play.

Pretending he got where he is through random luck is the idiocy here.

Pretending he got where he is through random luck is the idiocy here.

It was completely random luck. That's not to say that he does a bad job (at acting like a complete moron).

I half agree with you. It was totally random luck that his videos initially garnered the type of attention that it did. It wasn't random luck that he built on it and catered to that demographic after realizing what his demographic was.

Hmm. I guess I chalk it more up to luck? What I mean is, right place, right time, fortunate decisions. I don't know if he actually made conscious "sit down and think this through" type business thoughts.

I think its more of a case of an idiot lauded by even bigger idiots. His entire shtick is emoting at the exaggerated level of a Nickelodeon show.

Well you can't call him an idiot then. If he knows exactly what he's doing he's pretty smart, which it's obvious that he does. I personally hate watching his videos, but I can't deny the money he makes from it.

I'd really like to hear why you think he's an idiot. I'd be honestly shocked if you could give even one convincing argument.

How? What does he do that is good? As far as I can see he is just a 20 something who instead of growing up, exaggerates his childish side and screams and swears a lot to pander to kids whose parents would never let them hear that on TV, and then he got extremely lucky by going viral and becoming a well known name on youtube. None of that is something I respect, it's one part luck, one part asshole. If he did something smart to actually create the success then I'd be interested to know about it.

"Luck" gets you a few thousand subs. You don't get to where he is in an already over saturated market by being lucky. He found a huge demographic early on and stuck with it, and had made millions as a result. I'm not a fan of his videos either but he's playing a character through and through and people eat it up, even people who seem to despise him.

It's a bit naive to assume someone acts exactly the same in person as they do in front of millions of people.. especially if they've found success acting a certain way to those people.

[–]make_love_to_potato 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah I had seen his his name on Reddit now and then and always thought it was Pew Pew Die. I finally figured out it was pronounced Pewdy Pie after the south park episode featuring him.

Well besides the pressure to be entertaining, the fear of becoming unpopular, and the hours he has to pour into every video for editing, exporting, uploading and processing, no not really.

I threw in a joke but I did comment similarly to yours a while back.

I think a big chunk of people hating on him is that he's being succesfull doing the stuff he likes and making immature jokes for his target-audience. He pushes 1-2 videos out every day with tons of edits and clearly works on it. The guy himself is really humble, does tons of charity-stuff and is all around a good guy doing the stuff he wants. Good on him for getting money from it as well.

He's there to entertain his crowd.

I just don't think people recognize the pressure that gets put on Youtubers. I make this comment with RT all the time that they're going to work every morning with two rules 1) be entertaining and 2) don't be boring.

Even for people who are natural entertainers, you still get worn down, but you can never let it show.

They live on my road... I see them in our local shops buying groceries fairly regularly.

I bet he's a really nice guy and yeah I would do what he does to bring in that amount of money.

What he's saying is that he's actually absurdly poor due to having to pay to treat poisoning from all the house mushrooms.

I just find it weird how he can live anywhere he wants with the amount of money he makes, and he moves to a seaside town in England :)

I remember the local paper ran a story about "youtube's most subscribed channel owner lives in Brighton", and I thought "wow Psy lives in my home town???"

Then I found out the person with the most subscribers to his YouTube channel is, in fact, this muppet. Was disappointed.

Ehh, I think Pewds has just Flandersized himself. He started getting a ton of subs and making money, so he went even more overboard on the crazy loud stuff he does, and he got good results so he kept on doing it. Can't argue with 30,000,000 subscribers or all the money he's making off of their views.

What's shocking is that even video series in extremely niche games all get over 2 million views per episode. 99.999% of all youtube channels will never break the 1 million views mark. 99% of those who do will do it once and he get's twice that on a "bad" video.

You can argue that the 30+ million people that are subs on his channel have seriously bad taste, but you can't really ague with him. It works. Why on earth would you do anything different if it works. It's not like he was making high art or raw passion projects and then sold out and ironically, the fact that he lacks "mainstream" recondition seems to keep him grounded enough to not blow through all his money. When his popularity fades or he get's sick of doing videos he's set for life.

Psy has the most views on a single video, but there's hardly any point in subbing to his channel. He had one insanely successful song in the west but all his prior work and everything he did since has stayed local.

I was, in deference to my advancing years, unfamiliar with this whole "subscribers" thing. I have taken steps since to lessen my ignorance.

They do? He is from sweden?

Yeah I believe he and his girlfriend moved to Italy but the internet wasn't good enough for him to keep constantly uploading his videos, and they moved to Brighton, because maybe they both like England. I wouldn't quote me on that but they do live there.

Not as good looking, not so good with the camera, not as funny. If I was, I would.

I am not undermining his work. He is fucking awesome at what he does and from his interview, he comes off as a very honest person. I am sure it's tough work no matter easy it looks.

You gotta understand, everybody knows this. That doesnt mean you have to like him.

The guy was on South Park. Not just a voice, but actually was physically in multiple episodes, regardless of the fact that they were making fun of him, they hired him for the episodes. He's far more popular than people here want to believe. At least he's a nice guy outside of his internet persona from what I've heard.

I felt like they didn't really make fun of him in those South Park episodes.

No they just made a statement about how our mediaconsumption behavior is changing and how you can't really stop that.

Also that companies are more interested in getting a lot of social media traffic rather than making good music or movies.

Exactly, South Park mocks a lot of people, that was not mocking him.

It was mocking us. For not getting that times are in fact changing.

Precisely. Anyone who was mad about PDP being on South Park is a total grandpa.

Shut it! Just because I sit on a rocking chair on my front porch with my shotgun, doesnt mean Im out of touch! Im not a grandpa!

But what if we have evaluated the changes and still think they're stupid? Like how much of a sloth do you have to be to watch other people play games on the internet?

Did someone mention sloths? Here's a random fact!

A sloth can hold its breath up to 40 minutes while in water!

They couldn't. South Park goes after people who take them selves seriously, but he makes buck loads of money playing video games, entertaining people and being profane. That's basically what the South Parks guys do, for more work and less money.

SP "What you're doing is stupid!"

PDP "I'm making millions playing video games, like I give a fuck if it's stupid"

They also pointed out that making fun of the audience won't piss them off. They'll just turn around and call you old. They don't give a damn you don't like what they like. They don't want to convert you, show you the light or convince you they're right. You don't get it? Sound like a YOU problem, no a ME problem.

You just can't make fun of that.

Sure I can...

You're doing something stupid.

See?

But seriously... South Park is not just entertainment, SP is a god damm well made critique on society.

You can make fun of it, but it wont give you the desired effect of actually affecting those people

Like all things South Park, it feels like it was making fun of him, until you see the whole story.

On point ;)

Their audiences overlap, it was a mutually beneficial parasitism while also making fun of how stupid their audiences are.

I don't think many people are under the delusion that he's not popular. I mean, we're all in here talking about him. We clearly know who he is, and what he does.

We just kind of don't like his work.

I mean the guy could have a genuine "rags to riches" story about how he grew up homeless and changed his life for the better and quit booting black-tar heroin directly into his dick veins and started recording YouTube videos and pulled himself out of being human garbage but it wouldn't make me like him more. Respect him more, certainly, but not like him.

There's no amount of humanizing that's going to change the fact that his whole channel sucks, from my point of view.

His persona is grating, on some sort of primal level. His voice does something to my mind that aggravates me, physically. His "video game antics" are the same way. I genuinely do not understand what it is about his videos that any person, anywhere, would find appealing.

I don't want him to fail in life, and I don't care whether or not he continues his work, but I sure as shit want nothing to do with any of it.

So when I see his endorsement on a game, my first thought is probably going to be "oh, Jesus. Well never mind I guess."

After watching a couple of his videos I've realized he just tries to hard to be funny for me. It's almost cringe worthy how hard it seems he's trying to get a joke out. He just screams at the tv and cusses in Swedish. Yesterday I watched him play this game and yell "whats your favorite color". It made me stop the video and reflect on how much I hated his attempt at being funny. It's just my opinion which isn't much but I honestly can't stand him at all.

It's all artifice. If you view his early videos, he's a stereotypical swedish guy: awkward, soft-spoken, blunt. The super-annoying persona is just what kids think is fun and cool, and it works! It's a brilliant creation; you can even see him slowly develop it over time.

Maybe you could. I almost couldn't finish the south park episodes because I found him so annoying.

whatever. grandpa.

Easy now tiger. If you think that he is displaying stereotypical swedish guy behaviour I hereby invite you to Sweden so you can study first hand how wrong you are.

I feel the same, but then I realize that I'm not in the 11-14 age range, so I'm not the target demographic. It's early teenage kids watching his stuff and enjoying it. I liked stupid stuff too when I was that age.

Props to him for finding something that gets him tons of money and sticking with it. Also, from what I've heard he's a really nice guy outside of his youtube persona as well. So at least it's not a douchebag getting all that money. :P

Seconded. I think he's really annoying, and I cringe whenever I hear some kid yell "PYOOODIIIPAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII" in a public space.

The jump scare game videos are probably the most genuine. He began by playing Amnesia and other horror/survival games and is actually scared of them. His girlfriend will actually sneak up and scare him sometimes because he's such a baby about it.
The other stuff he does is hit or miss for me but often the quirky shit he says or does just hits my funny bone.

It is impressive that he does it all on his own, tries to stay humble and often use his wealth and popularity for charity work.

I play video games and I don't know this guy or care about his opinion. I never got big into the "streaming" thing, as a little brother I feel like I spent enough time watching OTHER people play video games.

Well spoken. I feel the same, but for me it's like "How can someone make millions with such bullshit?" I ask myself that question time and time again, not just video games, but every other sector in life (mostly entertainment though)...I find the thought appaling that people like to watch a "weird" guy (I get it, it's his persona) cry-yell-shout-scream in front of a video game. It doesn't give me ANYTHING. It's neither informative nor entertaining, but I guess people these days value entertainment differently, or I am simply just already too old for this shit...

How so? you can give me spoilers cause I tried to play that game and couldn't get into it

Spoilers ahead: The older brother dies at the end of the journey. Only the younger one comes back and saves his father. The game ends with two graves (mom and older kid).

And the ratio of immature dick jokes is off the charts.

Because his audience is young and immature. The dick jokes are perfect in this case.

Please! We're a bit more classy than that. We have DickBUTT jokes.

seeing the average youtube comment im not that surprised he's so popular

Remember Fred? This guy is like Fred for teenage boys.

At least Fred seemed to be making fun of himself/ironic.

Ugh Fred...that is a good analogy

I just realized that he is everything I hate about the world...personified.

There are almost as many people subbing his horrible channel as there are people living in Canada. W T F...

It was awful...

I tried watching him after the south park episode, figured it was about time. 10 seconds of that high pitch was too much. I guess people who watch him often get used to it, not sure how they can handle it

I was never a big Tobuscus fan but I would pick him 1000 times over PDP if I had to

I don't really think the intro is a bad thing. A lot of you tubers do similar things, little catch phrases that are in every video. It's the rest of his video that is a problem. When a consumer has to adjust their volume because you can't control your levels, that's a big problem for me.

Hey, say what you will but he's really funny and awesome at times.

Every youtuber has their own particular way of launching their videos, PDP's must be one of the more annoying out there and put me off subbing right off the bat.

his early videos were actually good, before he just started screaming nonsense

Sure it does but I have to admit he is so stupid it does, in fact, make me laugh from time to time. The hate he receives and how he reacts to it is also very entertaining. I just couldn't watch five minutes straight of his stuff.

Definitely not a Ronald Jenkees.

He annoys me to no end and his costreamers are just so loud and dumb.

I tried to watch a video of his here and there.

The only one I really enjoyed was the Goat Simulator one. That was, admittedly, funny.

I couldn't get into anything else though
