One time my buddy passed out at my place and when we woke up he had been using a tire cover from the back of a jeep for a blanket all night. No one owned a Jeep, so who knows where it came from.

I'm a skinny dude and it didn't used to take much to get me into survival mode. I worked at Applebee's for a bit and found myself eating food the customers left behind if I didn't eat within a few hours before my shift. The only way I could describe that behavior was survival mode. Far as I knew, I was gonna be surrounded by tear filled loved ones watching me in a casket, while they sue the neighborhood, if I didn't eat that mozz stick.

I was fortunate enough to be given an actual bed but no blanket. They were the fancy type of people that put that fitted sheet on first then another sheet on top of that, so I just took both of those off and slept on a bare mattress with two layers of sheets folded over on top of me.

Fitted sheets are fine, it's adding the second unnecessary layer which is fancy. What is it for? To hide the fitted sheets? Then why not just use the second sheet by itself? It makes no sense! I only know it saved me from freezing my ass off one night.

Well generally fitted sheets come with that second layer. Fitted sheets are to keep the mattress cleaner for longer (much easier to wash sheets than a mattress), and the 2nd layer sheet has the dual purpose of keeping your duvet clean for longer (typically people don't change these out as often as sheets) and to keep you warm on those not-a-duvet-kind-of-night nights.
