For everyone saying how awesome Dora was for 'standing up to Faye' last week, I hope this sort of demonstrates that sometimes you should think about the consequences of your actions, even if you feel them to be righteous.

Dora didn't drive Faye to drink. Faye did that all by herself. She's responsible for her actions, not Dora.

Well, Dora did nothing wrong, that's the thing. Her employee was drinking on the job and had a history of on-the-site drunkenness, bullying other employees and general irresponsibility - that doesn't get a pass just because they're good friends. How was she to know what Faye would do next?

I mean, I really do care about Faye's character and really, really hope she gets better soon, but I still think Dora was justified in what she did. Faye needs to learn the hard way or she won't stop her drinking problems at all.

Dora is justified for firing her, not for yelling at her about a bunch of other shit (which was disingenuous since Dora played along with/actively encouraged all those behaviors most of the time), and not for failing to check in on her or call Marten to let him know what happened or etc. when she stormed out in obvious distress.

If Dora had just made a business decision to fire her, and did so directly, then fine. But she got snappy and kicked her friend while she was down, then cut her off and ignored her when she should know there could be trouble. That's not ok.

I believe this would fall under the category of "consequences of Faye's actions."

Changing your behavior because the alcoholic might hurt themselves? That's what's called "enabling".

If 'not viciously attacking your friends when they're clearly in a vulnerable state after breaking up with their SO yesterday' constitutes 'changing your behavior', then you're probably an asshole.

Which is my point.

Even with this, I'd still say firing Faye was the right thing for Dora to do.

I'm torn. Yes, she was drinking at work, but she came to work drunk. Her decision making was impaired from the get go.

If she had called in hung over it would have been cool.

If all she did was fire Faye, sure. Instead she attacked Faye, basically said she was a terrible person who no one likes, at a time when that's probably the worst thing she could possibly hear, then did nothing to check on her or alert Marten to the situation when Faye ran out of the store drunk and clearly in some form of mental breakdown.
