2,129,455€ donated for the environment

Between December 2009 and August 2013 Ecosia supported a rainforest project run by WWF with a total of 1,271,557€. From August 2013 until December 2014, we supported The Nature Conservancy's Plant a Billion Trees program. As of January 1, 2015 we are working together with WeForest and Belgian-based Entrepreneurs Without Borders to plant trees in Burkina Faso. Our total contribution to the environment to date is $3,525,379.

How Trees Are Planted

Putting your searches to work

When you search with Ecosia, you're helping to plant trees in Burkina Faso in Africa. Ecosia gives at least 80% of its surplus income to help improve the climate and makes lives better in the region. The trees will also form a section of Africa's Great Green Wall, an intitiative backed by the African Union and the World Bank.

At the root of the problem

More than a half-century of drought has cost hundreds of thousands of lives in Africa's Sahel region. This is why WeForest and Entrepreneurs Without Borders – Ecosia's expert tree-planting partners – are working closely with local communities in Burkina Faso to plant and nurture forests that will bring water, plants and animals back to the region for generations to come.

Highest impact per Euro

Trees are only the beginning. In fact, the planting of a forest starts with the community, whose members can begin making a sustainable living from tree planting before the first seeds are even sown. Whether by selling tree seeds, weaving baskets from new grass, or earning more from grass-fed livestock, local women and men can better provide for themselves and for their families, including sending their children to school.

Tangible results

By later phases of the reforestation effort, mature trees will have the power to restart the water cycle in the region. Forests bring clouds and water – and plants and animals follow closely behind. A greener Sahel would see fewer human health problems and, in many cases, less violent conflict over scarce resources.
