Caring about feelings is a contract. If you do not care about my feelings, I do not care about yours.

"Okay"?

Moral standards are a contract. If you do not care about how I am spoken to, I do not care how you are spoken to.

If you truly are a sociopath, then moral standards and empathy are not the language you speak. You are only speaking them to me, and others like me, because you have learned they are something we talk about. You're like an inner-city black youth in a run-down high school who doesn't really know what a racist looks or sounds like, but he's learned that it's a word that will make white adults feel vague guilt, and be more compliant.

Now, I do not labour under the misapprehension that sociopaths are "monsters" in the sense that most people would mean the word. Not of all them are in prison. Some are executives. Stockbrokers. Engineers. Surgeons. And doing a very good job of it. Without murdering anyone.

I'm perfectly aware that empathy and conscience don't actually make people behave morally. Self-interest and social pressure do that. Empathy and conscience just make people feel bad when they inevitably do misbehave. You're only different in that you don't.

I'm okay with that.

But let me give you some advice, son. Just because empathy seems foolish to you, does not mean that those who possess it are fools. You're not going to fool all of us. Particularly not the ones who are paying attention. If you try to fool people, they will believe that what you are hiding is worse than it is.

Don't play for pity. You neither deserve nor need it. What you have is not a disability. It's less of a difference than most people think.
