I’m sorry to poop on your quasi-Italian parade but this guide is a mess. You obviously put a lot of time into it, but not a lot of real thought. This is in no way an actual guide, it’s basically just your personal idealisms and inspiration with an unneeded layer of syrupy condescension and stereotyping.
The way you write about Italians AND Women is honestly kind of nauseating, as if it’s an ad, "Find Out This One Super Ancient Italian Secret! Doctor’s Hate Them!”
One thing remains the same: Italian women use their femininity and eye for classic detail to their advantage.
Please go read some feminism 101 before stereotyping women like this. Or maybe just even read out loud what you are saying before you hit enter on a keyboard? You are implying that there is only One Italian Woman and that she uses Her Inherent Feminine* Qualities to her advantage. What the fuck?
Also why is this guide written “FOR AMERICAN WOMEN” as if Americans are somehow subpar to these walking goddesses? The constant fetishization of European women’s ~inherent style~ is delusional. If you have a chance, just sit in Antwerp Centraal Station or Leicester Square in London for an hour and see all of the frizzed hair and outdated fashion that you would otherwise not take into account like you would a truly well put together woman who catches your eye for whatever reason. Hi, confirmation bias?
"Water is one of their most essential beauty staples. Italians rely on this essential source of well being nutrient to keep them fit and fabulous.”
Water is also one of the most essential needs for non-Italians, who knew!?
Italian women believe in healthy, glowing skin that is faintly bronzed all year long, yards of tangled, shiny hair, shapely bodies and an overall, almost animal sensuousness.
Welcome to every Western society’s expectation of women in 2015, please take a seat and look around.
Besides the fact that your inspiration images have little to no actual curation of common thread beyond scarves and shawls and universally matronly staples, you contradict yourself or just make seemingly random addendums when you find it convenient.
Image #36 is an entirely grey outfit with sweatpants. How are sweatpants timeless, classic, chic, or a “workhorse” piece? They are a trend, something you said Italian women don’t pay mind to. Also, the all black collage? Trend. The cross-strapped sandals? The leather ankle boots? Trend. Even the waterfall cardigans are a trend, and one that is already on it's way out. So much for classic.
You can make any neutral work for your skin
Please go read the very helpful guide about personal color analysis by /u/TomLizzo, even neutrals have different temperatures that can work or not work with someone’s skin tone [http://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/2hjrhz/an_introduction_to_personal_color_analysis_aka/]

Yeah, I was kind of enjoying the guide until I got to the beauty part, then I got offended. There are TONS of super pale Italians without "shapely bodies" or an "animal sensuousness." This is an offensive generalization which detracts from the variety of beautiful women that exist in Italy, or anywhere.
And I can't anymore with people touting "water" as a beauty panacea. It's great, but drinking tons a day isn't going to make you magically beautiful. This is lazy thinking. Honestly, cutting out alcohol would probably help most people a lot more, but you don't see that idea being shoved down everyone's throats. (Admittedly, I'd rather be haggard and have my dinner wine).
Agreed with all points. I'm amazed that so many people are brushing off stereotyping as okay because it's just silly fun~!
Saying Italian women inherently know how to dress their bodies because the emphasis in Italy is placed on a woman's sensuality (this is TRUTH) is not the same as saying Asian women are submissive or that black women are "wild." This is fact. Have you ever lived in Italy? Do you know about Italian society yourself?
This is a complimentary observation. OP could have used negative stereotypes of we Italians like "Italian women always wear black after the husband dies because they don't know how to live without a man." or "Italian women spend so much money on clothing because their husbands work and keep them". What I am trying to say is this, if you are not Italian yourself, you have no right to tell people that this is offensive to Italians.
Source: italiana nata e cresciuta. And not offended. So don't pretend to be offended on my behalf.

Gonna agree with you here on a lot of points. There are tons of Italians who schlep around in jeans, sandals, and puffy jackets with backpacks, esepcially students. Trust me. They just seem to have perfect hair all the time.
When I go to Italy I see maybe 15% of women dressing like this. Everyone else looks pretty unremarkable, or they're part of one of many of continental Europe's hippie/grungy subcultures. But with perfect hair.
Yes but this guide is for emulating the typical Italian style of the "donna classica italiana", not for emulating just any old outfit. It is a guide to the bella figura. Would a guide puffy jackets be worth writing? Nobody wants to know about that! :P
I actually think a guide to styling puffy jackets would be super useful for a lot of people that live in cold climates.
Actually puffy jackets can be chic-ified and I would love to see a post here about that as people here are so down on puffies. Part of donna classica italiana is being able to chic the shit out of anything, inc. puffies.

I think that the pictures are definitely illustrative of a certain (rich) classic italian style, but the text is pretty much the same as any "How to dress like a ___ woman" or "how to look chic" article online.
Also, to be fair, this particular style isn't suited for people on a low budget as most of these pieces if taken from low-mid range stores (as many of them are in the polyvore) just won't have the luxury look that this guide wants to show.
I do however, think that some of the pictures do a good job evoking that luxe classic italian look that I've seen in Milan.

That was my intro point, it's not a guide, it would have been better as an inspiration album.
Exactly. That is the point. This is aspirational dressing. I don't understand why a few users here are freaking the f out about it.
just wondering, are you the now deleted OP (by your posting history, it's a little random that you have found this thread after a year of no posts and two posts before that)? if so, you shouldn't have deleted yourself and just continued with this thread under your original username. if not, disregard.

Wow what a nasty reply. This is the internet--it's not that serious. This is not snake oil. It's one person sharing their opinions and honestly there is not much original content on FFA to be 'tainted' anyway. And, as a native born Italian who have lived in Italy for 30+ years, I confirm them. OP is 100% on point.
But as we say in Italy, chi più ne ha più ne metta...

What are you confirming?

Holy crap. I mean, I agree with much of your analysis, but if this sub becomes MUA with the unnecessarily rude moral superiority crap, I will lose a toucan or two. Please calm down.

OP here. Thanks for this. I honestly think some people forget there are human beings behind the screen. Her comment was exceptionally hurtful, and even in the face of being called hurtful she's still ignoring that she hurt my feelings. Whatever, can't please everyone!

Please keep the toucans leashed at all times, they are extremely unpredictable creatures

What a nasty reply, especially considering this woman is actually Italian and able to comment on how Italian women dress. It's not stereotyping to speak to your own experience.

Italian here. Living in Italy for 30+ years before moving. OP is right for the most part in her guide/inspiration. Don't talk about thing you don't know about. Ma sei italiana tu? Saying Italian women inherently know how to dress their bodies because the emphasis in Italy is placed on a woman's sensuality (this is TRUTH) is not the same as saying Asian women are submissive or that black women are "wild."
Source: italiana nata e cresciuta. And not offended.
I'm sure a guide about how Chinese women dress to flatter their inherent submissive nature will go over just as well. How about one about black women who wear animal prints because of the ~Wild African Blood~ that runs through their veins. See, stereotypes are great you guys!
What I am trying to say is this, if you are not Italian yourself, you have no right to tell people that this is offensive to Italians.
Maybe I am Italian! Who knows! Sp00ky internet lurkers come in all varieties!

ya i'm tired of this snake oil shit being served and watering down the quality of FFA
I think your tone is so hostile and unnecessary.I agree with some of your criticisms and disagree with others. I think you could have just written out why you disagree with some of the OPs style suggestions, and maybe add that you did not like some of the writing.
But someone trying to put together a fun guide is not "snake oil shit" and there is not really that much exciting original content on FFA to be "watered down."
Seriously. She is nasty. I don't understand. I like OP am Italian, and can confirm the things she said. It's a silly little guide; is not so serious!

I don't care if you like my tone, I'm not a "You go girl!" type of ~lady~
That's exactly what I did, I wrote out what I disagreed with and why I didn't like her writing. I think that her "fun" guide is detrimental and that all of this blogger-esqe lifestyle idealism IS snake oil.

I just think it is better to avoid being so hostile when on a fun online forum. The OP has feelings too, even if you're not having a face-to-face conversation, and we don't have to unconditionally support the content, but I think that being so vitriolic is unnecessary and it's unpleasant to read.
You say this as if I made some kind of personal attack against her. I didn't like her writing and work. If you can't handle criticism from one comment in a thread of 114 otherwise oozing and adoring fangirling comments, that is not my problem.
If you don't like my writing then stop reading what I have to say.
Wow what a piece of work. You could by the same turn follow your own advices; if you don't like the post, then stop reading it. Do you just sign on to rain on people's parade? Vitriolic and unnecessary.
