Given that they most likely took on 6 figure debts to get to the point they are now with the intention of paying them off with a high paying career in dentistry, I would say that their lives would be profoundly affected were they not able to practice eventually.

I guess they will really regret making that mistake, and good thing they were weeded out before they were allowed to practice. It was close, but we as a society lucked out on this one :)

I disagree. This is just another example of society becoming too concerned with every comment ever made on the internet. I mean seriously, this group was obviously made in jest and obviously wasn't meant to be taken seriously. God forbid someone jokes about sexual harassment on the internet! What someone writes to their friends on the internet has nothing to do with their professional work.

Really? The racist, sexist or -phobic things you say about your colleagues behind their backs have nothing to do with your professionalism? I disagree.

What do comments about fellow students - whom I may never see again after school is over - have to do with my ability to preform on teeth?

They aren't in customer service, they are in dentistry. The only thing that matters is if they are good dentists. I'm not paying them to be good people, I'm paying them to fix my mouth.

It is the same as if they were commenting on professional colleagues -- these are their prospective future colleagues.

And it is a more sensitive situation because of the potential abuse of power in dentistry, as in medicine.

Still don't see a problem with it. Everyone talks shit about their co-workers. I don't give a shit if they are the biggest assholes on earth telling the most unfunny and off colour jokes in the world. They are dentists, I'm not paying them to be my friend.

For the record, I don't make rape jokes about my coworkers. I don't think most of us do.

But have you ever made a off colour remark ever? have you ever called a co-worker a bitch or an asshole? Better pack you desk up!

It seems (by browsing your post history) that you really get upset by rape jokes. You would enjoy Jamie Kilstein.

Then you have a different idea of what 'professional' means than I do.

Yeah! I sure wouldn't want someone working on my teeth who is capable of typing naughty words into the internet.

And what did they do wrong exactly?

"Joked" about drugging and raping their female classmates.

Fuck 'em.

I haven't seen these messages, which is why I'm kind of doubting the veracity of this.

I haven't either, all any of us can go by is the reports.

Which is why this is dubious as fuck.

why put "joke" in quotes. Do you assume that they actually meant they want to rape these people?

Who knows what they actually meant?

Why would you "joke" about doing something so horrible to people you see every day? Is this any different than "joking" about drugging and raping your patiences? Would you expect any professional body to tolerate that?

It was pretty obvious they were joking. If you can't tell the difference, you must get offended quite often.

Why would you "joke" about doing something so horrible to people you see every day?

because it's funny.

Is this any different than "joking" about drugging and raping your patiences?

yes, because the subject is different.

Would you expect any professional body to tolerate that?

depends on context, but good thing that wasn't the case here.

I'm not personally offended by this. I just think the "jokesters" are infantile fucktards undeserving of professional recognition.

because it's funny.

Not really.

depends on context, but good thing that wasn't the case here.

It is. These guys are going through a professional program. The university has a reputation at stake. I doubt they want to be known as the dentistry program that graduates fucktards who joke about drugging and raping people. I certainly wouldn't.

because no ever matures past the age of 24, right?

Not really.

Not to you, and that's the beauty of humour. We all have different tastes.

You're totally right, no other schools graduates people who makes offensive jokes! NEVER!

because no ever matures past the age of 24, right?

Many don't, from what I've seen.

Not to you, and that's the beauty of humour. We all have different tastes.

Sure. In the professional world, you have to behave with some modicum of maturity or you get the boot. That's how it works.

You're totally right, no other schools graduates people who makes offensive jokes! NEVER!

This is a bit more than "offensive jokes". Dentists, doctors and the like go to jail for assaulting patients. This is a real, serious thing. If you were the school, would you want to communicate to the world that your graduates just might be these sorts of scumbags? If you were the professional body, would you want to give them your stamp of approval knowing what you do know about their sense of "humour"?

Who knows what they actually meant?

Then why are you assuming the worst? What is more likely to be true: that they made a joke about rape or that they were planning to do it?

Then why are you assuming the worst? What is more likely to be true: that they made a joke about rape or that they were planning to do it?

Why should their classmates, the university, and the professional organization have to even contemplate this question?

[–]_LeggoMyEggo_Canada -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (0子コメント)

You're right. Why should they ... because only an idiot would assume that they would ever intend to act on these jokes.

Here's an exercise for you: go to your local airport, and make some loud jokes about hijacking a plane. Then explain to the nice security servicepeople that confront you how it's "just a joke", and you have "speech rights", and "what is more likely to be true: that I'm making an obvious joke, or that I really intend to do this".

Be sure to report back to us!

they didn't walk into class and yell "I WANT TO RAPE YOU."

they wrote it on the internet. it's like joking about the NSA watching you and then getting a knock on your door...

Look, if you were a dentist and it got out in public that you joked about drugging and raping your patients, you wouldn't be a dentist for very long. This is the same standard, as it should be.

If you're going to be a professional charged with responsibility over real people in vulnerable positions, you had better act like it. We're not so short on dentists that we need to gamble with these kinds of "jokesters".

[–]_LeggoMyEggo_Canada -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (1子コメント)

You think loudly announcing a bomb in an airport (and claiming "joke" after) and making an actual joke in a private setting are the same?

Yeah, okay.

Oh, I'm not suggesting you announce a bomb in an airport and claim joke after the fact, I'm suggesting you make an actual joke about a bomb at an airport. Important distinction. It should be very obvious to everyone that you're joking!

Alternately, you could try joking about drugging and raping your female coworkers at your big, professional job and see how that goes.

really? you would see people's careers ended over stupid comments? Its not like these guys are running the country. There should be consequences for making idiotic comments like they did publicly but a permanent one like expulsion is pretty over the top.

I think people should be fired for threatening colleagues and clients, yes. I can't think of a professional setting where that isn't the case.

Oh yes an offensive joke or two clearly says that these students deserve to be shot dead. TO THE FIRING LINE WITH THEM!

[–]_LeggoMyEggo_Canada -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Ahhh, you've been reading the CBC comments, haven't you?

No just reddit comments but I can see how you'd make that mistake.

[–]_LeggoMyEggo_Canada 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

As stupid as some of the Reddit comments get, the CBC ones are worse. People right from the start calling for criminal charges. What morans.

I don't see much difference haha. In another thread I'm being told a man who allowed his 90 year old mother to suffer and die on the floor days after her fall because she didn't want help did the right thing. Who are these people? Do they live in a cave and only read about human culture through the Internet?
