Why do people insist on documenting their stupidity on the internet?

It was not "The internet" it was a private conversation in a private facebook group that jokes were taken out of context.

Should everything you have ever said be taken apart by the braying mob to be examined for an offending statement ?

This is why they are called FemiNazis

Why would you assume that a "private" Facebook comment could not be overheard, any more than an "anonymous" post to Reddit? People are responsible for what they say.

So people need to be punished for speech in your world. Yikes.

This is what happens when people grow up without anything truly bad ever happening to them. The most petty offense becomes worthy of punishment. This is how we get the "thought police"

You're generally free to say whatever you want, you're not free of the consequences. You'll find most post secondary institutions have in depth codes of conduct that most students tend to ignore but can have real world consequences for disregarding.

Fair enough. Does Dalhousie actually have a "No sexist comments on their internet" policy?

The college of Dentistry has its own code of conduct (pg.23) that is in addition to Dal's code. Lines like:

Treat all members of society justly and with respect.

are clearly against what those students were doing. Especially in professional colleges/careers, your social media activity is scrutinized and regulated. I work for the federal government and we have social media guidelines that would allow for me to be reprimanded if I were to have been found to have engaged in inappropriate behaviour, even if it is on my personal social media accounts.

Freedom of speech only applies between people and governments for purposes of law, not people and institutions.

I guess for me the fact that they likely thought they were communicating privately should count for something. One can treat all members of society justly and with respect, and still make crude jokes with friends in private. The two are not mutually exclusive.

All though thinking anything you do on Facebook is private is pro level stupidity.

Welcome to the changing world of internet social media. I never had social media policies before, and I don't like the idea that comments I make off the clock can be used against me at work, but I can sympathize with an institution having a vested interest in its employees/students/etc. because their behaviour can put the institution on the hot spot. If a client of my institution likes me and wants to look me up to possibly head hunt, or even just to check my publication history, and ends up finding a facebook page or twitter where I have performed unprofessionally, it can have ramifications for my employer.

Basically, while I am free to think what I want, as soon as it's in writing or a photo that freedom can be lost. I could easily get a job at Subway where they probably wouldn't care at all what I say on social media, but since my job is more professional I have more responsibility just like these students.

What I find most disturbing about this is that it's not just jokes; this is a pattern of behaviour that is all too common in professional medicine. My gf is a nurse and I know many doctors etc. and while many are great, a lot have weird god complexes and treat women like dirt. If they keep this to themselves that's their business, but making a club and a facebook page is just dumb and they deserve to be held accountable by the Uni because it reflects poorly on Dal as well.

I do not disagree with you. This whole situation reflects poorly on everybody involved. Especially the university.

If it had remained "private " we wouldn't be having this discussion. Now that it is a public affair the university is going to act, or its forced to, to maintain the integrity of it's programs.

I guess they are forced to respond somehow. I still find this whole thing unbelievably stupid though.

I think the perpetrator who leaked private information about Dal students in a private internet forum should also be punished.

People do get punished for inappropriate speech, in my world. Canada has had fairly effective laws about hate speech and workplace harassment since the 1980s at least.

So people need to be punished for speech in your world. Yikes.

So if someone walked up to your daughter or wife and said "I'm going to rape you....HAHAHAHAHA!!! What a joker I am!" You'd be fine with it and just walk away as though nothing at all happened. Because he said it was a joke.

No, you wouldn't.

I wouldn't be ok with it. I would probably break his arm. But that is not the same thing as posting to facebook. Context matters and intentions matter.

In addition I would go to jail if I broke someone's arm, and rightfully so. The person in your example would be guilty of at least harassment because he is intentionally uttering threatening words to my face. So I guess your example is really comparing apples to oranges.

I agree with your point entirely, but when I read

I'm going to rape you....HAHAHAHAHA!!! What a joker I am!

I just pictured a Skyrim NPC walking away with an arrow in the knee and a blank smiling facial expression and burst out laughing.

Facebook is anything but a private outlet. You post text or images to a server that anyone can query and receive data from... its public. If you even look at Googles TOS for online storage... they exempt themselves from any private information being posted. Wanna guess why?

This is why they are called FemiNazis

Yes, women fighting for equality are Nazis. They're rounding up men and putting them in death camps.

It's because people like you can't figure out why shit like that is deeply offensives that it all needs to be spelled out in things like student codes of conduct.

This is probably one of the most ill-informed cliched lumps of shit I've read since this new year began.
