I once witnessed a hilarious exchange on /r/anarchism (no general disrespect to anarchists, but like every radical group they have their share of kooks) where somebody was like "the government totally likes alcohol because it keeps the population in a complacent stupor!" Upvotes, general agreement.

Then somebody replied along the lines of, "Yeah, and weed, too!" Suddenly - downvotes, scorn, replies of, "Nah man, weed wakes you up to the truth."

Frankly I laughed my ass off. I mean, I'm cool with both weed and alcohol, but as far as I'm concerned you're kidding yourself if you think that one is a mindnumbing soma while the other is a gateway to spiritual experiences. The only objective reason I can see to prefer one over the other is that alcohol can cause liver damage.

If you smoke your weed, it can also cause substantial lung damage.

Guy I work with honestly believes that weed smoke prevents lung cancer. Furthermore, it's perfectly ok to smoke cigarettes, as long as you smoke a j later.

I don't get the reasoning with alcohol, wouldn't it make people more violent? I'd rather have a crowd of high protesters than a riot of drunk protesters.

Well I think the general idea is that alcohol provides an outlet that people who are dissatisfied with the status quo can turn to to blunt their sorrows rather than engaging in radical activism.

The fact that you could make pretty much the same argument for weed did not go over well.
