Lots of "I woulda stabbed that shit it the eye with my ski pole" comments. Grow up guys, it's an animal defending it's territory, no reason to hurt it unless you're feeling hungry. Kids need to at least be able to fight a turkey to get dinner in my house anyway.

All these tough guy wannabes don't actually realize how absolutely mean a turkey can be, and how quickly you go on the defensive, not to mention the absolute lack of leverage of trying to poke something on your sides in snow and with skis on.

Turkeys are assholes, and this coming from a guy that has to deal with Canada Geese.

You have to deal with Canadian Geese? I know WW2 vets that are scared of those.

Yep, I'm up north. They're notorious assholes they are.

Just a quick note, the plural is still Canada geese.

And we are just animals protecting our young.

It's poor parenting to show cruelty over restraint in front of a child. Also, I wouldn't deprive my kid of the battle and glorious feeling of victory at having escaped such a fight. Protect your kids too much and you're just taking away fun experiences from them. Was the bird about to peck through ski gear? really?

What if that turkey pecks/slashes at the poor kids face. You don't have to murder the Turkey into 1000 pieces, but a swift counterattack isn't poor parenting.

First, I would've made sure my kid waited before galloping past the bird like a wounded gazelle.

What does hurting the bird have to do with pulling it off the kid? That's just excessive force. If you think that the bird needed to be hurt in order to remove the threat from the kids face then fine but any attack on the bird here would have been unjustified and probably made the whole thing worse. Keep calm and act intelligently; always works out best.

You obviously didn't read my post then. I would probably have just jumped at it and pushed it away. I think that is fair.

They did push it away, did you not see him push it away with his ski pole?

Yes, but slowly and gingerly. I am sorry, but I would have pounced on that bird and thrown him. I'd do it for my child, i'd do it for my dog, hell, I might even do it for a stranger.

Then you're a dangerous idiot who has no concept of necessary force or reasonable behaviour.

Don't birds tend to go for the eyes when threatened?

I agree with Teddie, not saying you should kill or be cruel to the bird, but if its attacking my child, not going to risk him going blind in order to not be cruel to a wild animal.

Eh, I'd accept the blinding of my child as adequate punishment for fucking up so spectacularly in front of such a glorious bird.

Oh that kid definitely sucks at skiing. He tried to run with skis. Multiple times. If he just kept his feet planted, skis straight, and pushed with the poles, he'd have been fine.

I really enjoy watching him try to run over and over with the skis on.

I'm not so sure if you can calmly restrain an enraged turkey in every situation. As a child I played with the one my neighbor kept quite a bit - those things can be vicious from what I remember. (If the same ones live in the country this was taped in, at least. But same thing goes for any big bird, really - I had similar experiences with cocks or geese.) Maybe they're not as scary to an adult, but look what a swan can do to people, and that thing's beak looks quite strong.

That is no turkey, but a capercaillie.

OR!!! How about we let the actual parents act how they see fit, instead of trying to make a one size fits all parenting guideline?

Okay... this is just what I would do. Feel free to raise your kids however you want.

How about his eyes? And that was cruelty?

Yeah cause that kid was in serious danger, right?

Blindness would suck

It looks like the bird is going after his face/eyes.

And was quickly pushed away...

Looks to me like the kid survived...

It's the adrenaline kicking in. The kid made it 15 steps at most tops.

Yeah, that bird used "Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique". The kid is a goner.

RIP in peace

The point still stands.

Agreed. I'll be damned if I'm gonna let some bird jab it's beak in my kids eye. I wouldn't go to the extreme of stabbing or killing it, but I'd certainly forcefully move it away from my kid and then just have everyone move away from it.

Its crazy how many people forget that we are animals too

You've never been attacked by a turkey have you? I have (somebody hand raised one near me and then set it loose when it got too big and irritable to handle).

That turkey should be killed. It will hurt somebody badly, take out an eye, give them a horrible infection (spurs have all kinds of shit on them).

I have said it before but I'll say it again: that's no turkey but a capercaillie.

Essentially the same bird. Slightly smaller, but no less aggressive, apparently.

I have been "attacked" by turkeys and porcupines, snakes, horses, cows and even chickens. Got trampled by a 800 lb pig and got a nasty cut on my leg from a croc last year. A shark once nibbled on my foot but worst of all I've had to routinely deal with ornery canadian geese. Oh, and I got a nasty cut from a 400 lb sea turtle once as I was hanging out with one after it laid it's eggs and a wave washed it back into me as we were heading out into surf. If you want to know what moment you start to thinking about counter attacking, it's when a monstrous sea turtle is heading towards you backed by the power of a costa rican wave with a sharp gaping open mouth that could take off an arm. I tripped on a log as I backed up and had to use my legs to push the log in between myself and the turtle. Of course, I wasn't about to hurt the turtle as it was really my fault I had put myself in such a stupid situation. Oh, I also cracked a rib running with the bulls in Pamplona (dumbest shit invented btw)

Frankly, anyone who has as much fear as you of a bird that weighs about 20lbs needs to go on a spirit journey alone in the woods for a couple days because, well, not sure how to politely say this but you're kind of a pussy.

Sounds like you'd get hurt less if you started killing some of these animals that seem to always be gunning for you. Word seems to have spread that you won't hurt them.
