The International Dota 2 Championship was held in Seattle, Washington, at the Benaroya Hall. It was the world's largest Dota 2 tournament, based on prize pool. This event is the third tournament to bear the name 'The International.' The first International was held in 2011 at Gamescom while the second International was held in 2012 in Seattle.
Prize Pool[edit]
The base prize pool was the same as the one used at the first and second Internationals. However, 25% of the revenue generated by the sale of the Interactive Compendium was redirected to the prize pool. The total prize pool was $2,874,381 USD.
Participants[edit]
Invite Procedure[edit]
13 teams were selected by Valve and were sent personal invitations to compete in the tournament and were announced during the week of April 23rd - 30th. The teams who were not directly invited had a chance to qualify through two qualifiers divided by geographical region. These invitational tournaments were appropriately named the Eastern Qualifiers and the Western Qualifiers. The winners of these qualifiers were directly invited to the tournament while the runner-ups of each tournament were flown to compete for the final spot in the tournament through a qualification game in Seattle.
Invite Timeline[edit]
Participating Teams[edit]
1 LGD.cn's invite was revoked due to roster changes. Instead they were forced to play in the Eastern Qualifier and their invite spot was given to TongFu.
- Full team rosters are available here.
Preliminaries[edit]
- Two groups of eight teams.
- Each series is two games.
- The order of team match-ups is random.
In each series, a coin toss decides with team has Selection Priority.
The team with Selection Priority gets to either pick their side of the map or the drafting order.
At the start of the next game, the team that lost the coin toss will have Selection Priority.
Extra Games: If teams tie along the Upper and Lower Bracket divider, more games will be played to determine seed.
Other seeds are resolved with the following steps:
- Compare the match-up history of these teams.
- Compare their wins vs the seed right below them. Repeat until resolved.
- Coin toss.
Playoffs[edit]
- Double-elimination bracket.
- The 1st place in each group picks their opponent from either the 3rd or 4th place finish in the opposite group.
- Upper Bracket
- Upper Bracket A: Group A Seed 1 vs Group B Seed 3/4
- Upper Bracket B: Group B Seed 2 vs Group A Seed 3/4 (The team Group B Seed 1 didn't choose)
- Upper Bracket C: Group B Seed 1 vs Group A Seed 3/4
- Upper Bracket D: Group A Seed 2 vs Group B Seed 3/4 (The team Group A Seed 1 didn't choose)
First Round: The higher seed has Selection Priority for game one and then alternates for game two. If it goes to a third game, the higher seed has Selection Priority again.
Other Rounds: Selection Priority is determined by total games W-L record of the Main Event. If it is tied, a coin toss determines it.
All Upper Bracket games are best-of-three. Grand Final is best-of-five, no game advantage.
- Lower Bracket
- Lower Bracket A: Group A Seed 5 vs Group B Seed 7/8
- Lower Bracket B: Group B Seed 6 vs Group A Seed 7/8 (The team Group B Seed 5 didn't choose)
- Lower Bracket C: Group B Seed 5 vs Group A Seed 7/8
- Lower Bracket D: Group A Seed 6 vs Group B Seed 7/8 (The team Group A Seed 5 didn't choose)
Same choosing order rules as Upper Bracket, except when a Lower Bracket team faces a team that is or was previously in the Upper Bracket, the Upper Bracket team has initial Selection Priority.
Lower Bracket games are best-of-one until Round 4 where they become best-of-three games.
