      Not bathing scenes specifically, but lots of shows have what we call "fanservice", which is basically just sexy shots of the female characters. Not a particularly uncommon phenomenon, even in Western media (Game of Thrones, anyone?), but it seems to be more prevalent in anime than other forms of media.

      I find it a little off-putting, but a lot of people like it. This post is clearly directed at people who like it.

      Edit: I should add that there are a lot of great shows that don't have much (or sometimes any) fanservice. However, for most shows, it's just something that comes with the territory.

          I'm not so sure this post is directed at people who like it. Based on the username and the lengthy descriptions, OP seems to be just really, really into bathing scenes, even recognizing specific rooms/bathtubs. I think OP might be a lady and this might not even be a sexual thing, just a really hardcore obsession. Like the rubber duck guy, although that is a sexual thing.

                    I see a lot of people in that post complaining about it. Admittedly, there were a lot of times when (some of) the mods were being assholes (even as someone who doesn't give a shit about western cartoons and webcomics, that photoshoot incident was really stupid), but given how worked up people get about certain titles getting adapted, maybe it was a good choice not to allow April Fools' jokes?

                    Personally, I think no, they should have allowed it. Anime is a fun hobby, and the subreddit should reflect that. Sometimes I feel that there's too many rules restricting the community, especially given how active our community is.

                      It's not an "either or" situation though, It's a balancing act between having fun and maintaining the sub, most subs this size that don't have narrowly defined content need to rein in low-effort posts because all subs this size are in danger of being flooded by them. It's how good subs die.

                      I can see how you are right about a balance, but I think that the sub is lacking a good balance. At one time it was anything goes, then they decided to start limiting content and being strict. We're still in that area. Next I would hope we move to a balance. As it is now what is defined as acceptable isn't really set, but based on random opinion from the mod(s) on at the time.

                          I really enjoy watching anime, but shit like this makes it more and more embarrassing, I really wish they would cut back on the fan service and the slice of life stuff. What happened to the days of anime being over the top action and melodrama that could put Calculon to shame or psychological thrillers that could cause a existential crisis.

                          I agree, but finding those shows is becoming a harder and more tedious thing to do. Know what show I'm enjoying this season? Seven Deadly Sins. Know why I can't recommend that show to any of my friends? Because on a weekly basis, characters get straight up molested for jokes.

                          Things like that are still being made, and there are people who like slice of life stuff. The mistake people make is thinking all anime is the same. Or your mistake, thinking an entire genre that many people enjoy should be abolished because of your personal distaste for it.

                            It's not like bath scenes are in every anime. Some anime are actually really mature and thought provoking, such as Monster. 74 episodes with 0 fanservice.

                              There are plenty of decent, great, and masterful anime out there. Just because there are a lot of bad ones doesn't spoil the rest. I don't understand why people think every anime is the same (or, in this case, has fan-service elements) - it's like saying every movie, every video game, every piece of art is the same.

                              It's a damn shame that shit like this keeps distorting the industry's image as a whole. /r/anime is mostly perverted, the industry isn't.

                                  The analysis of the kill la kill scene is horrible. The entire point of that scene is to reframe her mother into the truly power obsessed monster that her mother is. The first word that should come to mind is pedophilia, and this seems to completely gloss over that fact... reducing a pretty intense characterization scene to fan service.

                                    The analysis almost put me off wanting to give Kill La Kill a watch.

                                    I'm kinda new to anime and loads of people were telling me to get into Kill La Kill. I don't really dig anime with overly sexy characters (I think it's called ecchi? Correct me if i'm wrong. seriously i'm pretty new to this), but i can usually deal with it if the story is real g but after reading the caption for that Kill La Kill scene I was like... its fan service? sexual assault and pedophilia is fan service??? wtf. So I'm glad you cleared that up.

                                    I watched it because I was told it was a socially impressive anime and it isn't watched because everyone gets naked. I basically started out to justify to myself that everyone was full of it and just liked the fact that the characters wear little clothing. Good god was my self righteousness misplaced.

                                    The analysis is pretty bad. In terms of fan service, Kill la Kill both embraces it and satirizes it for the sake of absurdity; literally, the plot involves clothing as aliens trying to take over the world, opposed by an underground resistance group called "Nudist Beach" (I'm being serious). Both male and female characters end up barely dressed in a way that quickly moves from any kind of actual arousal to just bonkers over-the-top fun.

                                    However, the bath scene referenced here is not supposed to be arousing. It is supposed to be disturbing and negatively characterizes the main antagonist of the series as, well, fucked up.

                                    There are two scenes in Kill la Kill which are just weird and unnecessary, this bath scene being one of them. Watch it if you want a crazy fighting show with over the top animation. The first 3 minutes give a great idea of what the show will be like. The nudity I felt is never meant to be erotic, but rather satirical. Except for those... mother daughter rape scenes. I really don't know what they were trying to do with those.

                                      Seriously, I'm not sure how OP missed the mark so heavily on this one. If there's one anime scene that I just assumed was one of those unquestionable "yeah, that's straight up just rape" situations, it was that one. It is so clearly a window into the disturbed power relationship between Ragyo and Satsuki, how anyone could ever interpret the scene as erotic in any way is beyond me. I feel like this sort of misunderstanding is related to the overall misconception many have of rape as being the result of sexual desire gone too far, not seeing the real underlying truth that rape is first and foremost about exerting power over a victim.

                                      It's just so odd to me that someone could not be able to see how totally fucked that scene was.

                                                          I mean... I kinda disagree with the authors analysis of it. I don't believe Satsuki enjoyed that. She didn't want that. But her mother, who cares only of herself and has no ethics or morals, forced herself onto her daughter for her own amusement. It wasn't a lesbian incest love scene, it was a molestation scene. It served to make the viewer feel even more disgusted with Ragyo.

                                                            The Kill La Kill lesbian incest scene is more significant than it just being freaky hot fap material for some people. It is actually a rape scene.

                                                            It literally shows the full extent of Ragyo's abuse on Satsuki as a mother. This is extremely important to know because Satsuki is the president of a huge militaristic combat training school and does not take anyone's bullshit ever. She presents herself as someone who is persistent and relentless when meeting her goals. While Ragyo is the ultimate evil that Satsuki strives to defeat.

                                                            Ragyo rapes Satsuki regularly (though there are only two actual depictions of it in the show that I can think of). The rape depicts their abusive relationship. Satsuki, normally immovable, is completely helpless and submissive and Ragyo just uses her as a toy. There is no love between those two, just abuse.

Fan service has always been a staple, but a very large portion of modern anime seem to exist as nothing more than fan service as the medium targets the easier-to-please "Type B" otaku.
