Were the trinkets helpful to the children in any way? Even as toys?

Edit: She handed out pens, notebooks, and postcards with her dog on them. Kinda really lame, if you ask me.

Edit 2: I see I'm getting folks going through a good portion of my comment history and downvoting everything. You alleged charity types certainly hate criticizism, huh?

Edit 3: it's new years. Leave me alone people,

Edit 4: alright guys I'm taking a piss break and want to do a quick shout out to all my haters. Honestly, guys, I'm REALLY disappointed you're only going back several months to downvote my posts. I guess I thought my comment merited more commitment to your petty rage than that. I mean, christ people, is it THAT hard to go back a little further and do a little more dowmvoting to really show me how wrong you think I am?

Try harder, Reddit.

Edit 5: AIDS MEDICATION MOTHER FUCKERS! AIDS MEDICATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN NOTEBOOKS AND PENS. CHRIST YOU DENSE FUCKS! HOW CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THATS WHAT IM GETTING AT!

I'd imagine in those areas, paper and pencils can be hard to come by.

Despite your down votes, you are correct. Pens, pencils and paper are in high demand. Believe it or not all, these villages have school houses and kids absolutely love getting a notebook. They are cherished.

Easy there, they are a little busy bashing Bush. After all the Bush family has done more for these people than any other president before or after.

GEORGE BUSH DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE. drops mic

Cherished more than AIDS medication?

Yep. A lot of schools have the kids share a single writing utensil. Students don't typically take notes because there's nothing to write on/with. So the teacher will say something and the students will just repeat it.

I took a class on Peace Corps, and a lot of past volunteers came in to discuss their experiences. According to what I've heard, things that seem to go over really well with children is writing utensils (especially chalk), paper/notebooks, photographs, and candy.

Something really special in particular is chocolate. A lot of African countries produce chocolate, but the majority of the people who help produce it have never tried it. The video I linked is from the Ivory Coast, but one of the volunteers that came in lived in Madagascar, and they had a very similar experience. The people in their village were crazy over crappy Hershey's chocolate.

I agree that there are better chocolates than Hershey's, but calling it "crappy" sounds wrong. A Kiss is divine sometimes.

I heard it's better in some places, but I'm from the U.S. When you break it apart, there are air holes in it. Also it has a weird grainy texture.

Besides that, I was just trying to illustrate that even something as cheap as Hershey's is considered a luxury elsewhere. I'm not good at words.

I live in the US and Hershey's really isn't that bad. I've had all kinds of chocolate from Germany and Switzerland and Mars and the UK, and really Hershey's isn't that bad!! But to each their own. Happpy New Year!

So you're saying paper is better than AIDS medication?

So is life saving AIDS medication.

When I lived in West Africa, stuff like this went over so well. People loved looking at my pictures of home and if I gave them as presents, they would keep them forever. It was a great icebreaker. The value didn't mean anything, it was the gesture. Giving of gifts is a huge cultural feature. You give gifts for everything, even gifts of no practical value. Sort of a sign of respect. To be a kid and get your very own thing like this would be awesome.

Actually AIDS relief in Africa, and general aid to Africa was a quiet but consistent cornerstone of George W. Bush's administration. He doubled aid to Africa over Clinton's levels, and is credited with saving or helping millions of lives.

He is quite popular in many African countries for his efforts.

The billions in AIDS relief her dad sent over probably helped.

To clarify, the American taxpayers sent it, but yeah.

To clarify, the taxpayers paid for it. He sent it. One of the great untold stories of his presidency.

Listen to yourself whine about how a woman's free goods aren't good enough. She is in Africa, handing out free stuff to kids in desperate need. What have you done? At least she is doing something to help. N if it is pens, pencils, and paper, that is one of the best possible gifts she could give, because there is no greater tool than education.

A postcard with a picture of your cat isn't really paper...

[–]F1RST_WORLD_PROBLEMS 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I only partially agree with your opinion. But mass downvoting is just poor etiquette. Have a bunch of upvotes and a happy New Years!

This is the first comment that actually made my roll on the floor laughing

u are 100% right! its just ignorant to give such useless gifts. medication, food and knowlegde are prob the most important things to give. anything else looks nice but isnt rly helpful at all. how does a pen help if this kid gonna die later to any diseases. well i guess the next kid is happy to get his pen KAPPA

but i guess we are to srs for /r funny :(

I went on safari in Africa. We would drive through little villages and literally donzens of kids would run up to our van asking for pens and socks. I'm not sure why pens were such a hot commodity, but I can understand the sock thing. And why do trinkets have to be helpful? They are toys. I don't understand your post.

I checked your your comment history and I can see why. You're a smart ass with a know-it-all attitude who seems think they're conveying wisdom with an arrogant air that it should be common sense to every one else.

TLDR: You're just a dick.

Actually, people are Downvoting you because you're a dickbag.

Wow, it's like you guys really, really get me.

Edit 2: I see I'm getting folks going through a good portion of my comment history and downvoting everything. You alleged charity types certainly hate criticizism, huh?

Honest question, how do you know people are doing that? I don't tend to look at my post history. Also people doing that to you are idiots.

Literally all my previously positive posts are now negative. I'm not even mad. I think people acting so petty over my comment is fucking hilarious. Kinda disappointed their commitment runs out after only a month or two of my comments, though. Oh well :/

At least she was THERE. Difference between saying you'll do something and actually doing it.

To be fair, if the taxpayers sent me to Africa I would help out too

Hey if someone paid for my ticket I would happily help out. But we are not lucky enough to afford the $1000 or so it will cost to get there. So I think we could all be more helpful sitting on our asses clicking donate on PayPal.

Sorry, when was the last time you visited Africa to help in any sort of capacity?

Edit 5: AIDS MEDICATION MOTHER FUCKERS! AIDS MEDICATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN NOTEBOOKS AND PENS. CHRIST YOU DENSE FUCKS! HOW CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THATS WHAT IM GETTING AT!

I'm sure if she had a bag full of AIDS meds she would have gladly handed them out, but maybe for this particular day the budget only allowed for some writing materials that would be fun for kids to have.

Pencils and school supplies are great gifts in situations like this. They are easy to transport in (you can bring along many dozens easily) and, most importantly, it means that you have something to give to each child you meet. Sure, they are not expensive (TO US!) but they will be meaningful and remembered gifts to impoverished kids in poor villages.

You can't bad mouth a charity! It's not like they are widely known for keeping 80 cents of every dollar to themselves.... Oh.

But they have employee costs.. like a CEO that deserves hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

That's not all she did you ignorant fuck.

wow, you really care about karma, don't you? Pathetic.

99% of charities make things worse than before. Source: Work in a for-profit organization active in sub-Saharan Africa, have to clean up the bullshit (in terms of spoiled mindsets) left behind by charities on a regular basis.

That doesn't sound like a made-up statistic at all.

I well I just went thru ur comment history and upvoted everything so that should equal it out 👍

Now, what I'm curious about is, how would you notice that people are downvoting your comment history? Do you check your own comment history regularly or something? Also wasn't there some kind of algorithm introduced to stop comment history downvoting or upvoting from having effect?

Fucking Republican idiots giving you a hard time. I agree the bitch should be handing out clean water and making sure there's food not giving books with pictures of her damn dog.

Yes - she should carry around hundreds of gallons of water on her back into the middle of Africa to give each child who asks a drink.

Are you just saying you're getting down-voted in your other comments to get up-voted?

Honestly curious to see how dedicated these people are. People at the party I'm at are passing out and I'm still a little wired.

I'm just getting a kick out of all this.

Also, if you read though my comments on this thread, no one has actually addressed my points beyond "pens and paper are rare". I've responded to that twice I think with what I think are responses that merit an actual conversation. But I gave up on getting an actual, direct response to that point. So now I'm just fucking with people.

See all your edits, you know what could have saved you writing them. Fucking ignoring it.
