Sure. And if you read the article, you discover that only some of the orphans have AIDS. And the ones that have AIDS are already getting the medical treatment, including AIDS medication, that they need from the very institution that this event took place at.

Do you think she should have just walked around with a pocket full of AZT and handed it out like candy?

Of course there are desperate medical needs in Africa. But that doesn't mean that every single dollar should be spent on fighting those needs to the exclusion of all others.

She was a single person as part of a much larger group. The larger group was there doing exactly what you suggest she should have done. The orphans she was handing the "trinkets" out to either did not have AIDS or were already enrolled in an active treatment program.

If these kids were from a rural area then they have probably never held a photograph in their entire lives. Do you have children? My kids cut animal pictures out of magazines and treasure those more than mountains of toys.

Even if you say she should have given them a more substantial toy, how many schools and orphanages did they visit on this trip? When I went to Kenya one of the rural schools we visited had 2-3 thousand kids, the other, smaller school had 3-4 hundred. Probably a lot easier to carry around a few thousand picures, pencils, and notebooks than it is to carry around almost anything else.

I'm just pointing out that what she did was rational, reasonable, and probably even preferable to what she could have otherwise done.
