2011年にリリースされたFaceTime v1.0.xは2014年になっても度々米MacAppStoreランキング上位（時には1位）にランクインし、TwitterやRedditなど[1, 2, 3]で話題になっていますが、これにはいくつかの理由があるようなので調べてみました。

価格が無料でない理由

　FaceTime v1.0.xがまだ0.99ドル（100円）で販売されているのは「販売時に宣伝されていなかった機能を無料で追加することは出来ないというSarbanes-Oxley法」に触れる恐れがあるためで、Appleは同様の理由で2007年にMacBookシリーズの802.11nを有効にする為2ドルの請求をしており、これがOS X 10.7 Lion以降ではプリインストールされているFaceTimeが有料で販売されている理由だそうです。

It's an accounting requirement much like when Apple had to charge $2 for a firmware update to add 802.11n functionality. There's some sort of regulatory hurdle (Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002) that forces Apple to charge for Facetime (and new features in general) on older machines.

It's a bit confusing as to why they'd have to extend this bureaucratic nonsense to British customers, though.

現在でも購入されている理由

　FaceTime v1.0.xはMac OS X 10.6 SnowLeopard環境でのみ購入可能で、OS X 10.7 Lion以降のユーザーが購入しようとすると「購入処理を完了できません」と購入を拒否されます。

I use FaceTime all the time and it’s great. I am writing this review only to point out to potential buyers that this purchase and download are necessary ONLY if you are running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you have 10.7/Lion or anything later, FaceTime is installed by default when you install the operating system. Apple needs to make this more clear in the descripton for this app.

　このため現在でも旧FaceTimeがランキング上位にランクインする理由は「Mac OS X 10.6 SnowLeopardを使用しているユーザーがMacやiOSデバイスとの通話のためにFaceTimeを購入している」からのようで、

　既にセキュリティアップデートが打ち切られているものの、いまだにOS Xとしては第3位のシェアを持つMac OS X 10.6 SnowLeopardユーザーにはFaceTimeアプリはかなり需要のあるアプリのようです。（USのMacAppStoreのレビューはかなり荒れていますが…）
