Taxes

Missouri likes to tax rich people more via income taxes, and Kansas likes to tax poor people more by higher taxes for gas, cigarettes and alcohol ("sin" taxes). The general sales tax in KCMO is also slightly lower than in KCK. However, in the past few years, because Kansas has lowered its taxes on businesses, the Missouri legislature has responded by also lowering taxes for businesses to remain competitive, and to make up for the shortfall, sales taxes for various things will surely be raised soon.

Edit: This thread gets good, go make some popcorn

I'll concede cigs as they're becoming more and more of a lower class commodity, but since when do only poor people buy gas and booze? FYI wealthier people are more likely to consume alcohol on a daily basis and are also more prone to binge drinking.

Your bias is showing; excise tax effects everyone. Oh, and the difference in income tax between the two states is less than one percentage point. Source

/u/Vag_Blaster, you asked somebody to explain it like you're 5, but I see now you really needed it explained to you like you're three years old.

FYI wealthier people are more likely to consume alcohol on a daily basis and are also more prone to binge drinking.

That whole line of thinking had absolutely nothing to do with the point. I'm not saying nor even care to guess whether rich or poor people drink or smoke more or less.

but since when do only poor people buy gas and booze?

...wow. You're saying in my statement I'm saying only poor people buy gas and booze? Think about that for a second. No, that's not what I'm saying at all, because that's stupid.

I'm redirecting you to the point about income tax vs. sales tax now.

Sales taxes affect the poor more than the rich simply because the wealthy have more money when purchasing the same product.

Let's use an example here: A poor man with $1000 and a comparatively wealthy man with $100,000. They both buy a hamburger from the dollar menu at the drive thru. The poor man just spent 1/1000th of his wealth, the wealthy man just spend 1/100,000 of his wealth. That's how sales and excise taxes burden the poor more than the rich.

Income tax, on the other hand, uses brackets to tax the wealthy at staggered percentages that are greater. This helps to equalize the amount income earners in society contribute.

Your bias is showing; excise tax effects everyone.

Bias? Whatever, child. Yes, excise and sin tax "affect" (grammar lesson for you, not "effect") everyone, but not equally, as shown above. Poor people are affected more by excise taxes than rich people.

Oh, and the difference in income tax between the two states is less than one percentage point. Source

So... you're agreeing I'm correct? Yes, I already knew that.

I'll address another point that you added in an edit as I was typing my response (yikes).

Wow, it would really take some incredible mental gymnastics for you to convince yourself that this means you're right.

Your whole argument is based around MO having higher income tax and therefore "taxing rich people more compared to KS" when in reality the rates are only marginally different.

A marginal difference applied over a large population has a much larger affect.
