Firearms are weapons. Knives are tools.

I'm not arguing here about your right to bear arms or weather or not it should be socially acceptable to carry a firearm.

But I do understand people having more problems with guns in public than they would with knives.

Whether you like it or not, and you'll never hear me saying this in public, but part of the function of a knife is as a weapon. They've been used like this for thousands of years. They do a lot of other things, but they also do that. Don't ignore reality so you won't feel like you're part of a problem that society has made up (Edit: I fucked up this sentence but there is a point in there somewhere). Now before you get into a huff, weapons are tools. Tools are objects we use to preform a task we can not do with our bare hands, or not do as well. Guns are tools, knives are tools, hammers, saws, and wrenches are tools. Now they all do different things, but more often than not they have some overlap in functionality.

True, both knives and guns are used as weapons. But as far as tools go, knives have hundreds of applications where the only tool application for a firearm I can think of is to kill.

Well then I've been using mine wrong then, the only thing they've killed is some paper and some old pop cans, they must be really disappointed.

The sole reason I own my .22 long rifle is to poke holes in cardboard. I think someone would laugh at me if I pointed it at them. (Not that I would, 3 rules of course).

Nothing is a weapon until it is used as a weapon.

A pencil can be a weapon. So can a rock. So can a knife.

Firearms are just machines for throwing rocks. For many many people, they are a tool for enjoyment (target shooting is hella fun).

If I'm honest, with the amount of target shooting I do, I probably use my firearms more than my knives (based on amount of repetitions)

Thus both firearms and knives are tools. Deal with it.
