I have been treated like a second class ever since a marijuana conviction in Va. I cant vote, hold a professional license, or receive student loans. I had a 4.0 gpa in college and now my life is fucked. Do you know who I blame? You, the goddamed voter. If you keep voting for most of those assholes you get what you deserve.

Care to share your story? What happened? My initial thought was to not be sympathetic and say something insensitive, but then I realized that would have been dumb.

Not to complicated. Arrested for marijuana, sentenced to 7 years prison but put into 1st time non violent offender program. Strict probation for 3 years in Fairfax County.

How much did you have? 7 years sounds high for a first time.

Felony charges kick in at a half ounce, and can be compounded if the weed is divided or there is other proof of intent to distribute. Even at a half ounce, you can be sentenced for up to 10 years.

Based on the time of the original sentence, and his loss of the right to vote, it was definitely a felony conviction.

Sounds like he was holding enough for every voter in the state. Its our fault he had it, so it must've been our weed.

7 years for a nonviolent first time pot conviction? Did they catch you like this?!?

Do you know who I blame? You, the goddamed voter.

While I'm all for letting people do what they want (Libertarian voter here) you were aware of the existing laws. It's petty to blame others in such a way. Take some responsibility for your actions.

Yes, these laws will all change in time.

I did my probation. I paid my fines and jumped through the hoops. But you know what, the hoops keep coming. They are never ending and I can't vote to replace the politicians I don't like. How convenient.

You're not the only one in that situation, countless others are and have been. But still it happens, because we think, oh I've got fucked, but I have to find some way the government allows to get myself out of this, but the gov isn't exactly letting you. So now that we have ruled that out as the problem, were left with the current government in this equation.

Sadly that's where it's left for most people. They don't realize that if government doesn't work for the people, make it. If you can't, remove the government.

The only way there will be any real change (not gain an inch lose an inch) is to remove the current regime, and who constantly advocates this? The us government. They just do all this to other countries and we don't get ideas at home. I hope that changes for the sake of the people. I want my grand kids to enjoy freedom and I want it to be real freedom, not whatever is considered at the time by who's in power.

Howabout blaming yourself for choosing to be in possession of a controlled substance? The law sucks, but if you choose to break it you're making the bed that you might have to lie in.

I didn't get he was mad at the world for his choices. He's mad because voters keep putting these guys who perpetuate the laws into office.

At least we agree the law sucks.

I'd love to have a smoke, but I haven't and won't because I know what the consequences are for doing so. You did too, or you should have. Don't blame me for your ignorance and/or poor life decisions.

That said, the prohibitionist laws are stupid and I vote against them every chance I get. One day I might get to enjoy cannabis responsibly in the same way that I enjoy booze. Until it's legal though, I guess I'll have to stick to drinking.

If you're looking for sympathy take a little responsibility.

I am not looking for sympathy. I thought you might want to be aware of what is happening to your fellow Virginian because of stupid laws.

Wait I thought this was my fault, the 'stupid voter'. Now you're saying it's the ' stupid laws'? I'm confused.

So to put it simply, you are blaming everyone but yourself?

"If a law is unjust man is not only right in disobeying it, he is obligated to do so." -Thomas Jefferson.

I never said I think the law is stupid, especially the way it's treated in the commonwealth. I'm not going to blame the voters and not take personal responsibility. Nothing against op tho.

No, but HE was saying the law is stupid and unjust... that's his justification for breaking it. I was quoting a Founding Father to back him up.

It's not always the voter's fault. Look what happened in DC. 70% of the population voted Yes for legalization, and Congress just did a sneaky end run around them :(

DC is pretty unique in this fashion. Technically DC is not actually a part of the US, it's a territory. As such they don't even have a Constitution to dictate what the gov can and can't do... it's completely up to the whims of the persons in charge. They could even override a vote for a politician if they didn't want that politician the people voted for to hold that office.

And congress was voted into office, though not by the people of DC. The new slogan for the U.S. should be "USA, the land of the free except for DC".

And Guam and Puerto Rico. Remember that DC isn't technically within the US borders, it's a territory. Everyone living in DC is not actually in the US.
