Question. If I take this opportunity to punch that thing in the face is it more likely to leave me alone or be incited and enraged at me?

It's a great white by the looks of it. That thing doesn't care what a human does. It can cut you in half with one bite. You might injure it a bit, but I doubt anything serious to equate a response from it. These things only really experience one emotion and that's hunger.

Interestingly enough what it's doing in the picture is tasting the raft. Great whites get a lot of their information by biting things. Generally they only go after much larger and fattier prey like whales. So a lot of time they will severely injure a human by biting them, and then swim off because we don't have enough fatty tissue to be worthwhile essentially.

It may not care but with each of it's eyes popped by the end of a spear, it's going to have a harder time figuring out which way you went.

Well I suppose brutally destroying one of it's main organs would probably constitute a response.

I think you don't know what the word constitute means.

Oh of the love of god. If something "constitutes a response" then that thing is itself part of the response. Is brutally destroying the shark's eye a part of the shark's response?

His sentence should have read:

Well I suppose brutally destroying one of it's main organs would probably incite a response.

or:

Well I suppose brutally destroying one of it's main organs would probably necessitate a response.

or even:

Well I suppose brutally destroying one of it's main organs would probably constitute a demand for a response.

Also:

You might injure it a bit, but I doubt anything serious to equate a response from it.

Wut.

I think the word he's looking for is "warrant."

Brutally destroying one of it's main organs would probably constitute a response.

Brutally destroying one of it's main organs would probably be an adequate response to the shark attacking you.

The "response" he's referring to is done by the human, not the shark. I can see why you got confused though, it was rather ambiguous.

All of that grammar rage and nobody notice the its

It's not ambiguous at all. He meant to say "warrant a response."

It makes no sense to suddenly introduce this "response" into his comment unless he's referencing the above:

That thing doesn't care what a human does. It can cut you in half with one bite. You might injure it a bit, but I doubt anything serious to equate a response from it.
