Definitely not all of drama on /r/rupaulsdragrace, but this is some of the most controversial shit (that I have found).

#TRANNYGATE is definitely the most buttery one, scroll down for that one.

What you need to know before reading?

RuPaul's Drag Race is a competition for the next drag superstar. It's airing on LogoTV, produced by World of Wonder (sometimes abbreviated as WOW).

They use quite a lot of drag slang, which I'll explain here:

  • throwing shade/shady - insults, often subtle and not particularly malicious;
  • shady ape - phrase/meme coined by queen Vivacious, has nothing to do with race;
  • reading - insulting effortlessly; reading for filth - reading ruthlessly;
  • the T or Tea - truth, often in the context of gossip;

Oh and user /u/paleho is often featured here, and worships one of the queens (Jynkx Monsoon).

Former contestant Carmen Carrera comes out as a transwoman, and speaks out against the show for using slurs, such as "You've got She-Mail" segment, words like tranny, ladyboy and shemale being used, and most recently a minigame "Female or Shemale", where they try to tell if a woman in the picture is a drag queen or a cis woman.

In drag, you refer to the queen as what they're presenting as unless told otherwise (eg Willam prefers to be called he when in drag).

I haven't seen the show (yet), but this doesn't really sound very thought out by the producers.

Even if some people in the drag scene would enjoy using the words, they're considered slurs and shouldn't really be used anywhere. I can imagine a lot of viewers being somewhat offended at least.

I watch the show and LOVE IT. I didn't see anything wrong with the "You've got She-Mail" thing. Its a pun. The "Female or Shemale" minigame however, made me cringe so hard. They didn't even do it for a joke. There is no joke. Its just offensive.

After all it's probably the most diverse show on the Internet, most of the contestants are gay, there's a lot of black and Asian Queens, plus sized Queens, disabled and little persons, older and younger, transgender women etc.

Is it really semantics though? From what I've read and heard, the trans community is pretty adamant about these words being slurs, and not to use them.

It's on TV, many viewers are probably not trans and might not be familiar with it. They might not understand that the words are not to be used unless they want to be assholes.

One of the issues is that only one transwoman was against it, when she seemed to be losing popularity. There were a couple more who didn't mind it.

So it seemed she wasn't genuinely against it, she just wanted some publicity.

Yeah, it's not a beauty or fishiness competition. Some queens can genuinely pass for women, but are pretty dull otherwise (cough Courtney, Tati). I'm not against transwomen doing drag, anyone can do drag, but goddamnit be amusing at least. It's not just about being pretty.

I'm not against transwomen involving themselves in drag either, I just think Carmen was hella shady about it and continues to be shady in her other pursuits.
