6 Handy Tips For White People To Talk About Racism

undefined
This one isn't about us, guys. No matter how informed some of us think we are, we're never going to truly understand what we're talking about because we've never actually experienced racism first hand.

undefined
I can feel your lips moving to say something because I know you have opinions, but before you go saying stuff like "Well actually, reverse racism," just remember that whatever you say will probably be very wrong and only serve to prove whatever valid point you interrupted in order to say it.

undefined
No, just kidding. That's a horrible idea. No white people should be doing that.

undefined
I've said it once, but I'll say it again because it bears repeating. Here it is one more time: THIS ISN'T ABOUT YOU!

undefined
I'm not saying that us white people shouldn't be a part of the discussion, just that we should be the silent part of the discussion who tries to understand what the people that actually know what they're talking about are trying to tell us. So, yeah. Shhhhhhhh! Don't talk. Just listen.

Cool. You solved racism. Good job!

Fuck you, I'll talk about whatever I want. This is America, not the Soviet Union. I don't need permission from some random SJW.

Your flag is hung incorrectly Alex. Go back to your Ivy League ivory tower and leave REAL Americans like us the hell alone.

Mike Goldbrook I never said you had to agree with me. Hell I never even said I don't support justice for Eric Garner (I do). I just resent being told that somehow because of my skin color I'm not allowed to talk.

Also, I'm curious, what the hell is a "real" American? It almost seems like you, as well as this author, are attempting to construct an alternative and exclusionary America where only certain people are deemed worthy enough to have opinions and to be engaged in political or social debates.

Seems a bit fascistic, don't you think?

MLK didn't say "I have a dream that white people shut up about things they don't understand" he said "I have a dream that people are judged by the content of their character not their skin color"

This author (and other SJWs like him- of whom there are many) are arguing exactly the opposite. The ONLY thing that determines your worth, in his eyes, seems to be skin color.

Saying that white people have never experienced racism? At least on my part? Totally untrue... I grew up being bullied and picked on for nothing other than the color of my skin...
      • Lexi Vienneau · Top Commenter · London, Ontario
From what I have heard, that's just prejudice (still awful) and racism is constitutional. Because being white is an advantage in most circumstances aside from bullying if you live somewhere where you're a minority. Still, in general it is easier to find work, people don't assume you're a criminal and things like that if you are white. We can be made fun of for being white but it doesn't affect us in the same way out in the world.

Lexi Vienneau it's racist to decide how it affects me based on the color of my skin.

Lexi Vienneau So, regardless of what it did to me emotionally, it's ok?? I have mental health issues because of my childhood, which means I can't get a job as easily.... Racism exists in all races...

White people NOT talking about racism is why there still is racism. ( Well, the "white vs everyone else" kind). Certainly we need to get input from people who actually experience it. White privilege is hard to see from the inside. Some of us are not as thick skulled as you seem to think, and we DO see at least the most obvious forms of racial discrimination. I think I know better than to try to tell someone " of colour" what they should be thinking, feeling, doing , about their experiences. ( Please, Lord and Lady, I do, don't I?) But I am NOT going to not talk about it. Putting my thoughts out there is certainly one way to find out if I am totally off base or not.

The thing about racism is that it is about everyone and to say that there is no such thing as racism towards white people, or that white people have never experienced it, is very stupid indeed. I suppose that we could get into how racism doesn't actually exist because humans as a whole are a single race (ever heard anyone say 'human race' before?) but the world doesn't want to see things that way, so we won't get into that.
