You have to read Ryan's posts... I have no idea how he got hired or how Reddit is run, but if someone in management isn't looking over his posts and wondering how quickly he can be escorted from the building, there's something terribly wrong here.

I'm going to put on my tinfoil hat for the next comment.

Maybe reddit invested heavily in bitcoins earlier in the year, then realised they can't offload them without making a huge loss. So hire in a bitcoin evangelist to help boost the value and offload the currency onto your user base.

I still regard bitcoin as being disruptive. It is disruptive to the financial system and the government. Although neither of these "industries" have yet been disrupted by bitcoin, I believe they will be.

Just because I think Bitcoin is doomed doesn't mean I won't bother using it while it still lives if some is handed to me and there's an opportunity.

T'is true. I've no idea what moves the masses, I just post, and sometimes something weird happens and a post gets hundreds or even a couple of thousand upvotes. In a sane world, I'd probably have a karma score of around 10.

Personally, I really only see the voting system useful in the -5 to +5 range, to collapse or promote a post. And I'm not keen on downvoting for disagreement, either. Trolls, off topic, sure... but dislike/disagree? That's the click of a moron registering right there.

I discovered bitcoin on May 13, 2011 and never recovered. After developing a reputation as the bitcoin guy at the physics department, I eventually quit my physics PhD program and went full-time bitcoin. I worked for the best bitcoin company in the world, BitPay, but couldn't pass up an opportunity to bring bitcoin to millions of reddit users. I'm working on reddit's digital asset, as well as general purpose bitcoin infrastructure to enable things like micropayments and contracts. My favorite things are elliptic curves, hash functions, and Merkle trees. My favorite subreddits are /r/bitcoin, /r/sloths and /r/earthporn. If I had written bitcoin, it would have been in javascript.

I was there when Digg collapsed after their brainfart of monetising people's social content. I'd hate to see history repeat itself.
