  • Smith College President Kathleen McCartney sent an email to all students saying "all lives matter."
  • Six hours later, McCartney apologized.
  • The president of Smith College was forced to apologize after she sent out a campus wide email saying “all lives matter” instead of the rally cry of Ferguson protesters“black lives matter.”
In the original email, obtained by Campus Reform, Kathleen McCartney used “all lives matter” in the email detailing the “struggle” and “hurt” the Smith community was experiencing following the non-indictment of Officer Darren Wilson, who fatally shot teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
“We gather in vigil, we raise our voices in protest; yet we wake again to news of violence that reminds us, painfully, of the stark reality of racial injustice,” McCartney wrote.
McCartney also announced the college’s plan to institute a new Chief Diversity Officer to support programs and conversations to advance social justice.
However, it was the subject line that had Smith students up in arms. Students took to social media to chastise McCartney, blaming her skin color for her lack of understanding.
“No, Kathy. Please do not send out an email saying ‘All lives matter.’ This isn't about everyone, this is about black lives,” Sophia Buchanan, a Smith student, said on Twitter.
“[P]eople are upset because...[K]athy (and other white people) clearly doesn’t understand the importance of holding black lives central to the conversation,” one student wrote on an anonymous online confessional. “Black lives can’t be central to the conversation if the word black isn’t even in the title.”
Six hours later, McCartney apologized in a separate email to the student body, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette. McCartney alleged that she was not aware the term "all lives matter" could be used by some on social media to supposedly counter the "black lives matter" movement.
Besides apologizing, McCartney also planned a vigil and prayer for Monday afternoon to memorialize Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice. According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, 130 people attended the vigil.
Sophomore Cecelia Lim told the news outlet that McCartney should have apologized.
“It felt like she was invalidating the experience of black lives,” said Lim.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that around 50 students marched across campus and blocked traffic in a protest Sunday afternoon.
Smith College, is a private women's liberal arts school located in Massachusetts.

How disgusting!!!! Be a cold day in hell before I would apologise!!!! Shame on you Kathleen McCartney, unless someone was holding a gun to your head you should not have apologised. You made a statement about how you felt so by apologising you are now saying that, that is not how you feel. Time Americans got some backbone & stop apologising for being WHITE!!!!

That's not the point. "All lives matter" is just another disrespectful and counterproductive attempt by white people to change the conversation back to them.

Ben Harris, that would be the case if she wrote "white lives matter," you buffoon. Your side has to try taking something at face value for once instead of twisting every single point and story into something that serves your agenda. What you're saying is just as racist, but feel free to avoid any self-reflection.

How in the world did such an argument become valid? "All lives matter", not inclusive of "black" lives if "black" isn't even in the title. Liberal thinking is ass backwards and the libtards fight among themselves to further their absurdity.

How about we come up with a new slogan - "All tax payers matter"? Black, brown, yellow or white, if you work and pay taxes then the government should listen to you with regards to spending our money. The political system is totally corrupt and we currently have the inmates running the asylum.

        - Gay mayors subpoenaing pastors sermons, looking for hate language.
        - Public toilets now gender-less
        - Public schools allowing adolescents to determine their own gender when participating in school sports i.e. boy feeling trapped in a girls body can participate in the girls athletic teams
        - Presi...dent of the United States ignoring the outcome of two independent autopsies that both confirm that the shooting of a black teenager was justified based on the teenagers aggression towards the police officer

What the liberal agenda has accomplished is imposing chaos on a society built upon the basis of Christianity. In the teachings of Christianity "all lives do matter." Excluding "all" in the emphasis of "black", further disintegrates our country by allowing the liberal agenda to divide our society based on race.

The agenda of Obamanation is not to strengthen America for Americans, no, Obamanations agenda is to tear America and Americans apart. Propagating lies to cover up Obamanations actions and controlling the main stream media has allowed Obamanation to develop a flock of sheeple who blindly follow Obamanation without question.

Our country was founded on the basis that "all lives do matter". We as a society have suffered through periods of struggle in maintaining that premise but in order for America to retain her greatness, "all lives do matter" has to be the standard by which we live.

I will never apologize for saying that "all lives matter" and neither should any other American citizen. For those people who would promote a different agenda, they are always welcome to find another country in which to practice their beliefs.

"All tax payers matter" is a lot different than "All lives matter". What if you are too poor or too young to pay taxes? Does that mean you have no rights or don't matter as a person?

Also, this nation was not founded or built on christianity. Many of the founding fathers were not christian. That is why we have a lawful separation of church and state and why we are guaranteed freedom of religion (even though in practice it isn't quite true).

I consider myself very liberal and I do not want humans to be separated by race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or anything like that at all. Most of my friends and family are liberal and none of them condone racism or sexism at all.

America was not founded on the notion that all lives matter. Not even close. The original settlers believed that god purposefully killed off the native peopl...e so they could move in. The ones that didn't die of disease were intentionally killed or herded of to remote, desolate areas of land where they languished in poverty and still are to this day. And don't forget slavery. It was legal to have human beings as slaves for almost a hundred years after the U.S. was founded and it took an additional 100 years for black people to gain their civil rights here. Do you seriously believe this country was founded on "All lives matter" when many peoples lives were treated like they meant less or nothing for a majority of the time our country has existed?

Obviously all of that is wrong and sad. Everyone should be treated with equity regardless of what their skin looks like or weather or not they are a conservative or liberal (or a "libtard" as you so endearingly label them).

Overall, you completely missed the point. Black people and black communities are at a disadvantage because they were enslaved and denied equal rights up until recently and they still have not recovered from that damage, just like the native americans have not recovered from the damage done to them. More black people are incarcerated in this country than any other race and we should all work together to support the marginalized so that we can have a truly free and equal society where all lives really do matter.

Irie Earnest. A lot of your facts are not correct.

          1. Some of the founding fathers weren't christian. Most were, it's documented they started almost every session in prayer.

          2. Separation of Church and State is nowhere in the Constitution. It reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" So really, there can be no legislation prohibiting or endorsing religion. Again they started many sessions in prayer themselves so they had no intention of complete separation of church and state."even though in practice it isn't quite true" I dont understand what you mean, I assume you mean some laws ban some religious practices But if your religion says its okay to kill people and deal drugs, well, that goes in direct conflict with the law of the land and regardless of r...eligion you can't do it.

          3. There were founders who were against slavery. In fact, when the constitution was drafted, slavery was an issue heavily debated. The ones who didn't want slavery realized that they couldn't ban it fully and keep the advocates of slavery in the country so they only delayed action. There was a clause that stated slavery could not be infringed for 20 years after the drafting. The day that 20 years was up, importing slaves became illegal. After that it was nearly 60 years before the civil war. During this time, many people fought against slavery and there was a lot of tension in the states. However, they still couldn't ban it outright without causing a civil war. Eventually the war came anyways, and it was deemed illegal. Now nearly all people still believed blacks were inferior, but that's another discussion. The only reason slavery lasted so long was because the founders believed creating and growing a nation was a more important matter at the time. If it was banned any earlier than it was we may very well have had a confederate states today that endorsed slavery, so in the end, I like to think they played the situation pretty well.

          4. "weather or not they" Whether*

          and thats about it.
