2014年12月8日、太平洋戦争の口火を切った真珠湾攻撃から73年を迎えた。
真珠湾攻撃では、旧日本海軍が空母6隻と航空機約350機でハワイの太平洋艦隊基地を急襲。戦艦や駆逐艦、航空機などを破壊した。犠牲者はアメリカ側の約2400人に対し、日本側は64人だったという。
日本側は、アメリカ軍の戦艦8隻を撃沈または行動不能とする戦果を挙げたものの、このうち6隻は後に引き揚げられて戦線に復帰。真珠湾攻撃を受けてアメリカの世論は、一気に開戦へと傾く結果となった。
当時の奇襲作戦を回想できる体験者は日本・アメリカともに少なくなっている。現地で撮影された貴重な記録映画と写真で振り返ってみた。

FILE - In this file image provided by the U.S. Navy, crewmen of the USS Nevada still fight flames on the battleship, battered in the Japanese aerial attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. It was hit with at least six Japanese bombs and a torpedo that opened a 45-by-35 foot gash in the side of the ship.
