That UVa Frat Letter Denying Rape Is Bullshit and Here's Why

Now I need a cigarette.
With Rolling Stone's story on gang rape at the University of Virginia spinning down the crapper, the gentlebros of Phi Kappa Psi are striking back—with a stupid, carefully worded press release. It basically means nothing.
You can read the full statement, almost certainly written by a former frat-bro lawyer and not an actual Phi Psi guy, right here:

Working tirelessly.
I was in a fraternity during college. I say that here for two reasons: so you know I was sweet as hell back then, and so you trust me when I tell you this letter is basically meaningless, penned by a group of scared kids in crisis mode, who require regular meetings to keep their floors mopped of beer. It's supposed to "refute" claims of sexual assault against the group, but what does it really refute?
"We have no knowledge of these alleged acts being committed at our house or by our members" doesn't refute said acts.
"The chapter did not have a date function or a social event during the weekend of September 28th, 2012" doesn't refute said acts—that only means there was no formally organized party at Phi Psi that night. It doesn't mean people weren't socializing there. Maybe it was a handful of people, maybe it was a huge rager, but it's a given that someone is drinking at every college frat in the United States at any given moment.
"Our chapter's pledging and initiation periods, as required by the University and Inter-Fraternity Council, take place solely in the spring semester and not in the fall semester" doesn't refute said acts, because frat rushing is lawless. This is like a foreign regime denying the use of chemical weapons because it's against international law—who cares, man! Not Phi Psi, or any other fraternity, which are constantly breaking the fake rules imposed upon them by fake institutions like "Inter-Fraternity Councils."
"No ritualized sexual assault is part of our pledging or initiation process" doesn't refute said acts, but at least it's very minimally reassuring.
The only counter-claim that doesn't instantly fold in on itself is that "the 2012 roster of the Aquatic and Fitness Center does not list a Phi Kappa Psi as a lifeguard," as originally claimed by the alleged rape victim. But if the only hole in her story is that she said some guy was a part-time lifeguard but that guy wasn't a part-time lifeguard, then this apologia is truly as lame as it looks.

Exactly this. when I was in college, we were at frat houses all the time drinking with the brothers and just hanging out because we knew them. We didn't need a formal invitation for a party or mixer to be over there. Sometimes we'd have like 15 people over to the house and just play drinking games. It doesn't negate the fact we were there... and drinking.

I was in a sorority in college as well, and a couple of things:
1) Most of the times when we were going over to a frat house, it was just to drink and hang out. It wasn't an official party.
2) Also, an "officially sanctioned event" means the fraternity would have to abide by national rules. Get venues approved, card people for drinking, etc. So no, just hanging out in a frat house would not be an official event by any means.
3) Often times guys who live in a house or are affiliated with a fraternity aren't officially affiliated. Say, they didn't make grades or they got behind on dues. They still get to hang out, but they wouldn't be on the official roster. So yeah, the guy accused might have been a Phi Psi, and he might have been a lifeguard. But it's very possible he wasn't listed on the roster.
All this is to say, I agree with what you're saying. Fraternities deny things using this kind of language all the time. This is the frat boy mentality.

Speaking as someone who belonged to a sorority at a different Virginia state school, I will also say this letter is bullshit. There's no way Phi Psi wasn't partying on a September weekend when everyone's just getting back to school and classes haven't ramped up yet. Come on guys!!

On the idea that this happened as described in the RS article and that their refuting it is bullshit. If the information in the refute is true, it almost certainly means that the rape didn't happen as described or at least not by the people or in the house as desribed.

Of course they could be lying, but assuming their information is true, it is a successful refute of many of the key factors in the story. No guys worked at the pool, no event (even if they were throwing an illegal rager, guys don't invite dates to those), she claims it was a pledge ritual to gang rape someone, UVA pledging is in the spring. I can't speak to the veracity of their statement, but it basically contradicts lots of the main facts of the story. WAPO recently stated the name given to them didn't match anyone on their roster.
