Cards Against Humanity finally found a card it wishes it never created

Cards Against Humanity made itself into a phenomenon by breaking every taboo imaginable, but now the game’s creators are apologizing for one card they wish they’d never put in the deck.

Tumblr user horriblewarning, a 19-year-old from Boston named Jonah, was playing Cards Against Humanity when something happened that seems to inevitably happen at least once in every Cards Against Humanity game—he drew a card that went too far. The game’s success relies on its “South Park”-style strategy of offending everyone of every stripe equally—but somehow the combination of words and phrases always seems to push one player right up to the edge and then over it. For Jonah that card was “Passable transvestites.”

“A lot of my friends are LGBT, emphasis on the T,” he told Fusion. “Somebody played that card, and somebody else was like, ‘That’s not okay.’ I decided I didn’t want it in my deck.”

So instead of just removing his deck he burned it in protest, and posted it to Tumblr with the caption “DEATH TO TRANSPHOBIA.”

The post went viral, getting over 44,000 notes, and eventually prompting a Cards Against Humanity co-creator to weigh in.

“I regret writing this card, it was a mean, cheap joke. We took it out of the game a while ago,” wrote Max Temkin on his own Tumblr, reposting the picture from Jonah.

Nearly half the deck of Cards Against Humanity could probably qualify as “cheap, mean jokes,” but it’s pretty great that the game’s creators, who describe themselves as “straight white guys,” are taking the side of the trans community, here. It’s one thing to create jokes around phrases like “Glenn Beck getting harried by a swarm of buzzards” or “Miley Cyrus at 55″—they can probably handle it. But making young trans Cards Against Humanity players feel less-than for their sexual orientation crosses out of the realm of funny—even for this game.
