Oh OK, so I am unintentionally shaming men with beards on their necks who aren't actually "neckbeards" by using the term "neckbeard".

You know you're on reddit when...

intent isn't magic. picking a physical trait you find undesirable and using it to generalize groups of people's traits and habits is an asshole move any way you slice it.

Thank you. I find 'neck beard' to be personally hurtful.

I don't, but I hate double standards

I don't either, just wanted to present the illusion that some people might.

You may be right about that.

But I feel no sympathy for guys who go into a women's sub, pick a fight and insult people over a sensitive topic and then cry crocodile tears over being called a name and try to spin it as oppressive shaming. In fact, fuck those neckbeards and all the devil's advocates who can't acknowledge that these choices don't exist in a vacuum of philosophical purity.

That's the kind of double-standard that pisses me off, personally.

OK, so let's be clear here: you are trying to enforce a double standard. You think that Group A's name for Group B is oppressive but Group B's name for Group A is just assholish.

And that's fine, believe what you like, I'm actively not engaging that line of thought. I'm just saying that you shouldn't really be surprised when someone calls you an asshole for saying something assholish.

Yes, clarity is important, so I'll drop the "Group X" proxies and be direct.

I never said anything about the term "legbeard" except to acknowledge that I was called one. I don't find it oppressive, in fact I never said that anyone was being oppressed. Just the opposite, I said that the guys in the linked thread who were called "neckbeards" were NOT being oppressed, merely insulted (deservedly), as the term "neckbeard" is no more about having a beard than the term "skinhead" is about being bald - it's just a convenient label for a collection of characteristics and opinions that are definitely worth mocking.

The rest was brought by people who think that just because they can misinterpret what I write that I'm somehow beholden to defending and going down with whatever position I'm accused of having. I'm not. I'm also not surprised by the reaction I got - reddit is packed with people who only think in terms of competing sides and I sided against the neckbeard majority. It was worth it.

skinheads specifically, proactively shave their heads to associate themselves with the group. whereas growing a neckbeard, as a dude, only requires not shaving for a couple days.

basically your analogy sucks and you're using it as a shitty justification for being a jerk.

You mean it requires not shaving your neck for several days. If you didn't shave you'd just have a beard, or stubble, rather than the specific facial hairstyle popular among chubby guys who want a chinstrap but know they can't pull it off.

Is that proactive enough for you? Because that's what I'm talking about.

I'm defending a woman for defending herself in a women's sub from male provocateurs who knew exactly what they were doing. Fuck me, right?

ohhhhh so we can criticize people for the proactive fashion choices they make that, in my perception, places them into a group that I don't like? that's legit?

because in that case, fuck belly button piercings on women. they're a specific fashion choice popular among chubby women who want to washboard abs but know they can't pull it off.

See this is that whole pretending to be obtuse thing that I've been responding to all day. You're right off the deep end now.

You're trying to assert that this is about pigeonholing men with beards as "neckbeards" when we both know no one is suggesting that. Maybe I'll fly off the handle because you dared to flip the pronouns and said something about women! Shocking!

we don't both know this because it's not true. this is specifically what you are doing and refusing to admit to. direct quote from /u/patfav:

>specific facial hairstyle popular among chubby guys who want a chinstrap but know they can't pull it off.

how you continue to deny what is plain to everyone besides you is beyond me.
