What M2K really needs is someone to kick his ass and force him to stop playing for a while and go to the fucking doctor.

If he stops playing he will make even less money; smashing is his source of income

Weird. He might actually have to get a job like...a normal person.

He does have a job. Are you saying you'd rather have a plain occupation than make money living your dream? If I had a chance to make money playing music or playing video games instead of sitting in an office all day or something like that, I wouldn't hesitate to choose the first option.

The problem with your statement is that you seem to think that someone that professionally plays video games should be expected to have a very stable and healthy life. It isn't. Maybe it's what you like to do - and that's great - but you should be mature enough to accept the consequences that come with that decision.
[–]ikahjalmr -4 ポイント-3 ポイント-2 ポイント 9 ヶ月 前 (4子コメント)
But your profession has nothing necessarily to do with your health or stability of your life. How many people are filthy rich but miserable because they have no intimate relationships with friends or family? How many people have everyday lives and are miserable because they put themselves in catastrophic debt, or have had some accident happen to them and essentially doom them to spend the rest of their lives recovering? Beyond the damage from actually playing the games there is nothing inextricably different from a career as a video game player than anything else. Just like M2k may spend a lot of time "working" as he travels around, so too do people with two jobs or running their own business, etc, often have little time for recreation.

Your profession absolutely has everything to do with your stability of life - especially financially, which is the topic being discussed at hand.

I'm honestly not even sure what you meant by these. Having poor interpersonal relationships is not at all dependent on your profession and is simply a personal issue. Likewise, amassing large debt or suffering a critical accident are difficult situations, but I fail to see how that relates to why playing video games as a profession is a viable opportunity (for most).

No. Deciding to hinge your entire income on Smash - a community that (as many here have pointed out) is decidedly small even for the video game world - and having to rely on winning money from weekend tournaments here and there is nothing whatsoever like working a consistent job. A consistent job gives you a steady paycheck, and usually a pretty stable schedule. It gives you career growth opportunities and sometimes it even gives you additional workplace benefits, such as insurance for you and your family. It does not depend on you beating someone else at a game to have money to put food on the table.

What I said was that there is more to stability of life than having a normal job. If you don't know how to live by your means or are prone to making poor decisions, you can easily destroy your life no matter what kind of job you have. And until smash tournaments become so rare M2k can't make money off of them, it is reasonable to expect that he can continue to make money off of them.
Because having a certain kind of job does not guarantee anything for all people, which is the only thing I'm saying. If you live by your means then of course most jobs will afford a decent life. But just look at how many athletes end up in bankruptcy after having made more money than some people will make in a lifetime.

Now you're saying normal jobs give a steady paycheck, stable schedule, growth opportunities, and workplace benefits. Obviously video gaming doesn't fall into this definition of a normal job, but then neither do a lot of other "normal" jobs.

At this point, I'm just going to hope and assume that you're trolling, because I find hard to believe that the argument you're essentially trying to make is that "shit happens, so why go for a steady job? You could get hit by a meteor tomorrow!"
And obviously it is true that shit happens and the wealthiest and most successful people are still very mortal. That does not, however, make this source of income a stable one - which is what this entire post has been about.
[–]ikahjalmr -1 ポイント0 ポイント1 ポイント 9 ヶ月 前 (0子コメント)
That's not what I have been saying at all. What my posts have been about is that simply "a job" does not guarantee anything.
[–]TheBuzzSaw 2 ポイント3 ポイント4 ポイント 9 ヶ月 前 (3子コメント)
Just because you're doing your favorite thing does not make it "living your dream". Sure, I'd love to have a career playing Smash, but receiving sub-par paychecks, struggling to make ends meet, etc. certainly dilutes "living the dream". Frankly, maintaining a plain occupation and doing competitive smash on the side would be far more productive and do a better job at "living the dream".

M2K's dream was to be the best at Smash. If he's not the absolute #1 he's still one of the very best, especially with his strong performances across the several entries in the series. This is strictly what I meant by what I said
[–]TheBuzzSaw 0 ポイント1 ポイント2 ポイント 9 ヶ月 前 (1子コメント)
I'm saying he shouldn't do Smash exclusively. Tournaments are typically on weekends. If he had a "normal" job, he would be able to afford this medical procedure, AND he could still practice Smash in the evenings.

the guys a walking 14 year old, with some health problems physically and mentally, it may not be easy for him to get a job, and he may be actually afraid of it.

Heh, I read
If he stops playing he will make even less money; [thus] smashing his source of income
Anyway, it may be that way short term - but continuing to play as he is will only make the damage worse. He'll pay dearly in the long term if the problem isn't addressed immediately.
Source: I've dealt with carpal tunnel and several RSIs.

lol, missed a chance at a decent pun there
That is true. I can imagine how hard it would be to just give up your only way to make money for a while, though. Hopefully the future will bring good things for M2k and yourself.
