How about this, What if the 'soul' isn't real? it is just an illusion created to fill in the gaps in the understanding of the mind? the way that people believed that gods pulled the sun across the sky as a burning chariot before we worked out it was a giant ball of plasma with a thermonuclear reaction at it's centre.
