There is one point I will agree with that is for sure a problem with this generation and that would be idolizing people who are perceived as near perfect humans. The problem with a Kim Kardashian or a Kate Upton as their position stands in the media is they are the peak of human form, but they're also heavily edited and what the public sees is very selective. Because of this wonderful increase in technology that has been so important to the success of humans and our development, we are also incurring a lot of stress with the ability to constantly see these people in media, and see the way people react to them. It's creating quite an unhealthy environment for body perception. Heck it's not just with girls, the Channing Tatums and the Taylor Lautners of the media market have a lot of impact on guys growing up and what's perceived as an attractive body. I personally struggled a lot with self confidence, especially in middle school, because of the ab obsession that was pretty frequent. It's not that those people have done anything wrong either, in fact most have worked hard to get where they are. But denying it as an issue is sorta ignorant.

Sorry for the wall of text I just think it's a pretty important issue. Not that it never existed in the past either, but it's far more prevalent now according to studies on youth stress and mental health.

Are you fucking kidding me right now with this shit? Idealized female figures in art has existed since for-fucking-ever. Have you ever been inside a museum?

Okay so please explain to me where you think the harsh increase in eating disorders, stress and anxiety are coming from. I never said it didn't happen in the past all I was trying to say is it's a big problem now because media is in the face of kids 24/7

People would do things like eat tapeworms to lose weight or wear tight corsets that cause a whole load of problems. I'm just talking about the western world, all around the world we can see a lot of these issues too. You are so focused on the right now and ignoring the past.

media is in the face of kids 24/7

You know what has always been in the face of kids since the dawn of humanity? Society. Culture as a whole. Children are always going to have cultural expectations and mores instilled upon them. Whether it's in the form of pretty television characters or statues and paintings of goddesses (i.e., idealized forms of women for the time period and region).

You still haven't addressed the very apparent increase in the frequency of mental disabilities and eating disorders, I'm not denying the problems didn't exist in the past but you're lying to yourself if you think it's not more frequent now. Obviously society has always been pushing expectations and obviously beauty has always been desired but if you don't see the correlations between modern media and the mass amounts of students with anxiety and stress and body issues you need to do your research.

Do you think mental illness is something that's new? Mental illness, historically has not been treated with the utmost respect. In fact, many people still don't take it seriously. We don't know how these issues were broached in the past and in different cultures, but anxiety and stress are not new.

I'd say modern media has changed our perception, but to blatantly say that it's a unique quality of this generation is a bit shortsighted.

I didn't say it's unique, I did say it's far more prevalent however, and lots of evidence supports this. Obviously the treatment of mental illness is better but stress is also higher and IIRC the suicide rate is higher too

There's really no hope at all for any future generations.

I'm not saying there's no hope I'm just saying that it is actually important and that we do as a generation often lack self confidence and acting like it isn't an issue is incorrect, because we as a society genuinely need to tackle it because it's a problem yo
