I hope like hell the mods here don't turn into anything like /r/technology or /r/politics. They have always been really good guys and this puts them in a very bad light. The hypocrisy is a bit alarming. Being told that you didn't communicate with the mods when they clearly weren't replying to your sent messages about the topic is not on. You acted on what you and the only mod to respond thought was best. You did what was right, the others are in the wrong here.
EDIT: HERE IS MY POST ON ABRA's THREAD. The /r/pokemon mods are suppressing information from the community.
Honestly I feel like there should be some kind of voting system to remove mods or repeal actions that mods have made that the community disapproves of. Seriously, I've been hearing about these power trip stories more and more often in increasingly more niche subs, and it's really starting to worry me.
In situations like this, both parties should be able to tell their sides of the story, and the community could vote on wether the ruling was fair, unjustified, or neither - it fair, the ruling sticks, if unjust, the ruling is overturned, and if neither, a review of the case and a significantly different ruling must be given that is less strict than the prior one.
Seriously, it's really frustrating to see the entire community in disagreement with the mods and yet have no say in these affairs. Power-trip mod tribunals always turn ugly in the long run, and this is the first major red flag that calls for action.
This is exactly what should happen. The only problem is, the mods that have more power don't want to listen to what the community has to say on their decisions. What they say, goes, in their head. They never seem to notice that it affects not only how others perceive them, but how it affects the community as a whole. As is the case here, a mod is removed and no statement is given by any other mods. They couldn't care less about the people, they only care about their power and going up in the ranks. And they'll do whatever it takes to get there, regardless of what the comunity thinks.

Makes me sad, man.
Of all the subreddits I'm subscribed to, I never expected that /r/Pokemon would be the one to go through drama like this.
I'm extremely disappointed.
All subreddits have their drama and like most drama it will blow over in time. I know how annoying it is when you love a community but watch mods kick it down sometimes. On the other hand I as a mod myself know how irritating a mob mentality can be. Mods aren't always right, but neither are groups of angry people.
P.s. sounds like the mods dun goofed this time.
The mods definitely goof'd and they're not doing anything about it.
I know mob mentality can be vicious, but the mods are doing nothing to try to fix this, just doing damage control. If they're acting like politicians, they should be treated like politicians.
I personally won't be satisfied until something is actually done about this, whether that means other mods stepping down, being forced to step down, or changing policies, because they've been crystal clear about never making Oppa a mod again. Honestly, the whole incident reeks of fishiness and ulterior motives, and I don't want people like that running this subreddit.
But what can I do? I'm just some lowly commoner forced to live under these mods' regime. I'm honestly more than just a bit worried they'll finally get fed up with me speaking out and telling them to do something, anything to actually fix this and they'll just drop the ban hammer on me for "harassment" like they said they did with the anon.
This blows.
If it gets to that point the community will split and make their own subreddit. You guys don't NEED their subreddit, you just need each other.
Honestly I feel like there should be some kind of voting system to remove mods or repeal actions that mods have made that the community disapproves of.
Then you'd have larger, aggressive, subreddits taking over smaller subreddits they disapprove of through sheer force of numbers.
Allow me to explain how this would work.
Let's say there are two subreddits, A and B. B has a well-known history of mass-downvoting threads and comments they disapprove of and is much, much larger than A.
Reddit unveils a new system whereby enough subscribers voting on a subject can get a mod kicked out. So redditors from B start swarming A. Even the small fraction of B's subscribers that are involved outnumber the original subscribers by a vast majority. They initiate action to get the original mods kicked out, and their actions succeed due to the overwhelming majority of the votes.
Congratulations. Now B controls A as well, and there's very little anybody can do to change it back.
The system we have in place right now isn't a perfect one, but it could be a lot worse.
How would they be able to force out mods or overturn policies when they have no actual ability to put the mod on trial in the first place?
The way I see it, this system would be activated by the mods whenever they want to make a large decision that effects the subreddit as a whole, like removing a mod for instance. In this case, they would make a post about their decision, post supporting evidence, and allow one post from the defending party as a rebuttal and a counter-plea. This in turn would open up a poll to subscribers that allows them to weigh in on the decision as an impartial jury of peers.
As for other subs coming in and flooding the polls, this could be fixed by a simple "age" check. If your account hasn't been subscribed to that particular subreddit for a predetermined amount of time, you will be barred from voting in that poll. Easy fix. If that's not possible, the subreddit could instead go into a sort of "lockdown" mode that prevents anyone from subscribing until the polls are over, and only those currently subscribed have the privilege to vote.
Would that not work as intended?
It sounded like you were describing a situation where the users had the ability to put the mods on trial. If the users don't have that ability, I find it highly unlikely that the mods would use that ability themselves.
For example, take the situation that's occurring here and now. Do you honestly think the mods would voluntarily put themselves on trial for removing another mod?
I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying.
This would not be voluntary. If the mods made any decision that affected the sub as a whole, they would be required to have the sub vote on their decision. I believe the community should decide how to go about things that directly affect them.
So a mod wouldn't be able to, for example, remove another mod from a position of authority without putting it to a group vote first?
Interesting concept. It would require a major overhaul of the reddit codebase, it would completely change the way Reddit moderation worked, there would be unforeseen negative consequences, most of the existing mods would be very loudly against the change, and a sizable minority of them would likely quit in protest, but it is an interesting concept.

TotalBiscuit made a First Impressions video of WH40k: Space Marine. A certain moderator from a certain subreddit proceeded to crap all over TB by claiming TB said certain things ("WH40k stole from Gears of War") which were not true. Then said mod proceeds to engage in ad hominem attacks, eventually banning many loyal /r/warhammer followers.

A let's player talking shit to drum up controversy and get people talking? Say it ain't so!
That said, while warhammer40k proper didn't steal anything from gears of war (more the other way around), the space marine gameplay is actually kind of derivative of that same Gears of War/Darksiders/Dante's Inferno type of gameplay.
Meh Warhammer, 40K, Warcraft etc etc are all fairly derivative of previous works.
Warcraft is (more or less) directly based off of Warhammer fantasy; blizz was going to make a game for warhammer fantasy but it fell through, and they turned it into warcraft instead.
Warhammer 40K is actually pretty old in terms of game properties - it first got started in the late 1980's. Now aday's it's really just a melting pot setting, though.
I've not played 40k since around the mid 90s maybe. I do remember the first Warcrat game coming out and seeing the direct similarities to Warhammer but they've gone on to develop the lore beyond that.

I'm going to assume this the truth (I don't visit that sub) since the disclaimer when I try to go there says that the subreddit was "shut down for doxxing"; even if that claim was true it is a piss poor mod move. :/

It's the truth. The head mod of the subreddit himself tweeted the threat. A community manager (volunteer(?) employee) of Blizzard even told him it wasn't the best thing in the world to do.

Damn, this one is a lot more drama-tastic than that warhammer one. I'm really curious as to how that mod even began thinking this was a good idea or if he thought this would ever go over well.

a day or so ago it was shut down because the mod (/u/nitesmoke) couldn't play the game
The sub came back up after a few hours, where the rest of the mods threw up a sticky letting the community know what was up, and how they weren't 100% supportive of his actions but didn't want to cause a witchunt or any overreatcion in the sub. Of course most people decided they should call him out on his actions and get him demodded because of that little tantrum, which only made things worse since he was one of the first mods (and iirc the founder of the sub) so no other mods can touch him to do it themselves. The sub went private again, but right before he was apparently doxxed and started demodding everyone besides himself. If it had stayed up longer i'm pretty sure we would have seen the banhammer strike a few blows as well.
as of now, the community is starting anew in /r/worldofwarcraft. the remaining mods have put in a request to take ownership from him in the appropriate subs but since he's still active on reddit and didn't break any site rules nothing will probably get done about it.
Geez, this is just like /r/xkcd all over again. For some reason there are no rules to keep power hungry mods from abusing the system. What /r/xkcd had to do was just wait until the head mod was inactive for a certain amount of time. But until that happened there was absolutely nothing the community could do.

Seems like a lot of moderator power-tripping going on lately in some of my favorite subreddits. /r/wow is just plain gone now, and before that was a huge shitstorm in /r/bloodborne where one mod removed all the others and started banning everyone.
Is there seriously no way to fix these kinds of problems when they arise? It seems like Reddit admins wouldn't really care, would they? Or is it just dependent on how many complaints they get in their inbox?
EDIT: Oh wait, it seems that /r/wow is back! Earlier today it was set to private.
