That's what I keep telling myself everyday: you have only one life, don't waste it, do what you want, live your life to the fullest, so one day you won't regret a thing.

Live in the present moment, to say it succinctly.

It's really our moments that make our lives. It's as simple as enjoy where ever you are, right now that makes a good life.

You can make the roadtrip fun without driving to hell, mind you. Just don't make your destination Rochester, so to speak.

Edit: Jagermeister was on sale, my bad. I meant to say: It's possible to live in the present whilst keeping a mindfulness of others and the possible future--much like the glass of water I'm going to have so I can both enjoy jovial alcoholism and not be functionally dead tomorrow.

Don't waste your life waiting. Do things now. You can literally do anything imaginable. No one will stop you, or care. I wouldn't recommend doing those things that are illegal/harm others, but go enjoy your one life no matter the cost. Want to see the world? Do it. Want to climb a mountain? Do it. Whatever you love or are interested in just fucking experience it, you only get one life so enjoy it.

But will your regrets really matter when you're dead?

I ask myself stuff like that sometimes. Like, why does anything matter whatsoever if we're just going to die anyways? I eventually realized, I am alive, therefore I should live.

I came to an oddly satisfying conclusion that, if life = 1, and death = 0, our thoughts, too, should be full of life (equal to 1, meaning positive), and save the negativity for death.

Idk if that makes any sense to you, but yeah, that seriously helps me sleep at night xD

I know what you mean, then again who knows if it will all matter upon death. We see death as the end, but nobody really knows. I usually sleep pretty well, I rarely think about death, when I do I am just all anxious for about 5 minutes then get distracted by life events and it's all fine. It's such a weird concept to think "Will everything even matter upon death?" then we strive to stay alive. Which also makes me think, if naturally all living things strive to be alive, then it must suck to be dead or else everything would just die all over the place for no reason which sometimes things do anyway.

Does it work simply telling yourself that? - I know that I am the living example of this poem, and I would love to change, but I don't know how. I live entirely focused on some future goal and I always have. - And everytime I achive a big goal I feel no joy because I am already focusing on the next.

Keep at it, the married with kids one is what you should really avoid.

No need to be so pessimistic. I'm happily married (no kids) to a man I've been with for 14 years & it's great being with my best friend everyday. I have friends who feel the same way about their marriages. Find someone with similar interests/temperament, fall in love, marry him/her, and you've got a wonderful life.

[–]I_POST_WHILE_POOPING 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (1子コメント)

I find my kids great as well as my wife too. People on reddit always advise not having kids or getting married but personally I love having our 2 kids in our lives. Nothing makes you slow down and live in the moment like seeing the world through their eyes.

I just got past the "dying to start work" stage.

I never had money growing up, and after graduation was stoked to be making money, and while I am, part of me wishes I taking shots of everclear dressed as an ewok with my college friends again. We all still talk of course, but I moved kinda far from the pack of em, and most of us grew up pretty quick after starting jobs.

I never realized the stupid shit I would miss. All the childish and cheap humor. The drama of college relationships and flings. Trying to do chemistry after not sleeping for 36 hours.

I realized I don't want to work 80 hour weeks to zone in on financial targets. I left to go to across the world and see some shit. I came back and found a different job that lets me live more. Not just getting drunk and fucking around like college, but seeing crazy shit across the world, helping people. Getting fucked up in other places where they drink cool stuff and wear better hats. I'm excited about life again.

As someone who fits into that first sentence... thanks for posting this.

I often hear that people "forget to live". I also feel like I'm in a perpetual state of waiting... waiting for X to happen or Y to finish, so on... I just don't know how to relax and stop thinking in the future.

If you want a serious tip, try mindfulness meditation. It has a way of calming thoughts and both over analyzing the future, and ruminating over the past.

I'm sorry, but this is so incredibly lame. You finished high school, college, worked a successful career well enough to establish a home, marry and have kids, and retired? THAT'S WHAT LIVING IS. You don't have to be fucking Walter Mitty to say you've lived.

Whoever Walter Mitty is, I'm sure not a lot of people are fucking him.

This short story is about not forgetting to pursue the things you want instead of the things you're supposed to want.

It really depends. Some people give up the life they've always dreamed of to pursue a stereotypical middle class lifestyle. Now, many people enjoy that lifestyle and it is considered a success to them, but not everyone wants to live like that.

Some people would rather travel the world and never choose to have kids. Some people would rather have a job that pays them less but allows them more freedom to pursue their hobbies or just spend more time with their friends.

To each their own.

same, alot of my friends graduated last year, tired of being poor college kid and I enjoy my field so im pretty excited. I loved college though

This poem looks like someone wrote the last line first and put a bunch of meaningless filler in front of it. The listed activities are ones that most people find highly fulfilling and shape their identities around them. There should be a bunch of lines in there about how much fun they had at college, how satisfying it was to be good at their job, how much joy their children brought into their lives, and how they can't think of a better way to spend their elderly years than to take it easy and spend time with the people they love and do some things that they've always wanted to do but didn't have the time for.

The author has no idea about those things though because they're just some dumb kid try to condescend about their parents lives because it's so edgy and rebellious that no one could possibly doubt that they're a brave, strong, independent 15 yr old that sneaks out after curfew and doesn't take shit from anyone.

Psychological projection:

Psychological projection is a theory in psychology in which humans defend themselves against unpleasant impulses by denying their existence in themselves, while attributing them to others. For example, a person who is rude may constantly accuse other people of being rude.According to some research, the projection of one's negative qualities onto others is a common process in everyday life.

lol right well if this motivates you then don't let me stop you.

The attitude outlined in my post is pretty easily identified. It's obvious the author is a high school kid considering the first line. This looks like one of those english class projects where everyone writes a poem and the teacher makes a book for everyone.

You missed the point, - if you are able to be happy doing those things that is great but it does not mean that the qoute does not describe something I, and many other adult sucessfull people, struggle with. I cant wait for this day to end, this week, this month, this year - I live entirely focused on some future goal and I always have. - And everytime I achive a big goal I feel no joy because I am already focusing on the next.

With all due respect -- this is such a bullshit!!

Life is what you make of it, regardless of age. Why do you put 18, and not 25 here? Or 45?

Each age comes with its privileges and constraints, but having missed one train does not mean you should cry in despair for the rest of your life -- catch the next one! (Or the bus...)

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, he said:

“Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

i know nobody who is "dying to graduate college and work". and unless you work 100 hour weeks for 30 years, none of these things are really obstacles to enjoying life...

It's kind of weird how if you're living your life you know it and if you aren't, you know it

I think that "dying" to move through life is what life is about! The excitement of going to HS, to college, having your first girlfriend and your first break up, getting married, working full time, having a child, raising a child. These are all things that keep us going. They are unknown to us and so we want to explore them I just think that is why life for humans is so amazing, because we go through these stages in our lives and we are excited for each one to come (usually). Once you retire you really have nothing to look forward to except death and really what is life then?

Finding a job, getting married and having children is living. A lot of people here seem to think that you have wasted your life if you didn't travel when you were young or if you didn't go to a lot of parties. Living life to the fullest, to me, means finding something good in every day and it's never too late to do that.

But while you were dying you were livin. Just quietly and perhaps in the service of someone else .

Meh, I don't feel time passing. You start working, you're thirty, you work more, you're forty, you pay into a 401(k), you're fifty, you put in some overtime, you're sixty, you watch some TV, you're seventy, you retire, you're eighty, you make a little garden in your backyard, you have a stroke, you hope someone helps you brush your hair, you're dead. What's the problem? It's just a rock going around a star.
