I'd just like to mention, I finally get to go home after 28 days, and to celebrate that, and getting /r/wow back, I'm going to the bar again. Anyone who shows up gets the first one on me.

Although I fully expect to be drinking alone again. You jerks... :(

Belabouring the point by further attacks or witch hunting is not the adult thing to do, and it will serve no productive purpose.

Please just let it go folks. Hunting out personal information on the guy over some subreddit drama is fighting childish with childish. Everyone take a deep breath and post some WoD screenshots of people lost in Gorgrond.

I had a lot of fun when Wrath came out, but I remember there being a fuckton of bugs. I didn't have the same sense of "oh man" that I did in Vanilla and now in WoD.

Hi /r/alienth,

Since the top moderator here clearly crossed into "admin intervention" boundaries. Could you elaborate under what circumstances does a moderator exceed their powers and needs to be handled directly like this? Is there a mechanical system or are these handled on case by base basis? Does this mean moderators are not at liberty to shut down their communities?

...Anyone care to fill me in on what happened?

Not neccesairly the "behind the scenes" shit. Just a quick ELI5 of what happened in the sub

WoD release was bad. Lots of people couldn't log in, because the game servers were full. People on Reddit were upset, and they made lots of posts complaining, as well as things like screenshots of "look how bad my login queue is!"

The mods got sick of it, so they decided to basically stop enforcing their normal rules during the shitshow. /u/nitesmoke, who was the head mod, took it further, threatening to shut the subreddit down if he couldn't get into WoW within 24 hours. He didn't consult the rest of the mod staff about that part, that was all him.

24 hours passed and /u/nitesmoke still couldn't play WoW, so he shut the sub down. He eventually put it back up, but people were very upset about what he did.

A few hours ago, /u/nitesmoke shut the subreddit down again, claiming that he was being doxxed (people were spreading his personal information). Shortly after that, Reddit's admin staff stepped in and took control of the subreddit away from him, leaving it with /u/aphoenix.

edit: It has been confirmed that /u/nitesmoke was being harassed at work, which is why he shut the subreddit down.

Someone mind posting a TLDR for people not into the subreddit drama?

The guy incharge of this subreddit got sick of taking down the same whining post because the game wouldn't work and was already frustrated he couldn't play. So he gave us free rein to shit post for 24 hours then made the sub go private till people could connect again. Then people on this sub decided that made him worse than hitler Garry and begged for his removal as a mod. Not remotely looking at the amount of work he was doing for free while we were all whining and reposting the same pictures of queues. In other words every one here thinks the good guys won, but really we were all assholes to a guy who had to much on his plate and wanted some time off.

EDIT:

Apparently guy in charge was also doxed and took the sub down agian while i was at work. That is when the admins stepped in.

While I think what he did was shitty, I don't see how making the sub private would cause grounds for admin intervention. Seems kind of strange or else he did something else that most didn't know about.

It kinda reads like a decision between the business side of Reddit and Blizz instead of a community issue between admins and mods. That's just my impression and it's pure speculation, though. I'm kind of torn between thinking there should be more transparency in this situation about why they made an exception and intervened and thinking that it doesn't do much good to add more fuel to the fire.

It kinda reads like a decision between the business side of Reddit and Blizz instead of a community issue between admins and mods. T

Honestly if that is what Happened I hope it never comes out the absolute shit storm would be more retarded than what the last few days have been.

Yeah, I personally don't care if this is how they want to do things (if a sub is big enough/important enough to get admin intervention for reasons), but it's very annoying when it just seems so wishy washy (an example being jailbait was left alone until it got media attention).

I feel like online communities in general have a pretty good bullshitmeter; not having a good reason means there's an integrity issue, or a disconnect at least, between what admins say and what they do. I'm not down with spending a lot of time participating in a community with credibility issues and I don't think other people would either. At least being transparent makes the decision seem less shady. However, that being said, the mod post at the top of the subreddit touches on bullying IRL and phone calls and all kinds of shenanigans, so maybe that's what happened? Dunno.

Making the subreddit private was within the moderator's power, though not great for the community. There were other factors at play, as alienth said, but we're not going to discuss them.

"we stay out out of mod politics unless in special cases where we want to get involved"

just like /r/jailbait.

I much rather you guys just say you will get involved. This passive aggressive game is annoying.

Which is fine. I just have plenty of reason to think it was just to keep Blizzard happy. Which is fine in itself, but it always seems to be "We stick to our self imposed rules except when we don't."

[–]Badass Warlockalienth[S] 3

I can confirm we weren't contacted by blizzard regarding these matters. The subreddit could've stayed private forever from our point of view (unless it fell into valid /r/redditrequest territory).

We did not step in to make the subreddit public, we stepped in to remove a moderator due to circumstances which required our intervention. It sucks that the situation came to this, but it did.

By factors, I refer to violations of our site rules, not outside interests.

Yours an alienth's replies to me are probably the most honest replies I've seen from reddit admins in regards to an issue like this. I'm more curious than ever now what he could have done, but I can at least accept you've come out and said he broke site rules.

We'll never know the specifics, but we do know that leaving this subreddit to rot would be a PR nightmare for Reddit: 200k subscribers is not small. I won't speculate at specifics, but do know that when any company makes a judgement they must look at both the letter of the law and the spirit. In this case the decision was probably grounded in the latter.

TL;DR: Reddit cops enforce the circlejerk. Wonderful.

I fully agree with nites decisions and think it's bullshit you stripped his mod priveleges

With that said, we did have to step in on the situation with the top mod of /r/wow[3] . I'm not going to share the details of what happened behind the scenes, but suffice to say the situation clearly crossed into 'admin intervention' territory.

Sorry, but you just set a precedent or you didn't and we don't know what exactly the precedent is; we just know the outcome. I want to know what /u/nitesmoke did for the admins to decide that the top mod and creator of a subreddit no longer was allowed to mod their subreddit. There have been numerous issues with moderators and subscriber outrage and disgust with how their subreddits are run and the admins have not always intervened. You just did something that, maybe, has never been done before on this site and we're getting no information about why you removed /u/nitesmoke and whether or not other moderators can be removed for doing whatever it is that he did. I'm happy that this sub is back under control but people can't just let this vague reasoning for kicking the mod out go and/or just let it be ignored.

Shut up.

Reddit admins have been very unwilling to step in and remove power tripping admins in the past. And that makes me really curious too. But the difference I can see between that crazy mod on the gaming/hardware subreddits, and here; is this guy totally shut down a very busy subreddit. People that play wow may have a very good reason to not visit reddit anymore (if it stayed shut down), and the admins most likely had to step in to prevent that. It literally is a business decision. Not just financially, but reputation wise as well. I talk about links I find on this subreddit constantly in my guild vent. I used a guide I found here as well for heroics. /u/aphoenix was kind enough to link me this guide when I did not have access to the subreddit on saturday (first private lock).

So the admins want to have stability here as it's a subreddit of nearly 200k subscribers. Not just that, but WoW has MILLIONS of players, so even if 10% were on this subreddit, that would be a sizable increase to the traffic that reddit itself gathers.

woah woah woah. Does this mean that admin intervention will be more common in the future? I dont know how I feel about that.

also how is the baby?
