They could. They probably won't. If they let /r/xkcd sit in the hands of someone who used it as a front to broadcast for subs about misogyny and anti-semitism (it's better now, but only because the original holder goofed and forgot to log in for a prescribed period of time), they're not likely to do anything as long as nitesmoke is willing to squat on the sub.

Sounds a lot like what happened with /r/bloodborne a while back. The head mod removed all the other mods, banned a bunch of people, then appointed one of his alts as a second moderator to try to make it seem like things were still cool.
