me: i just rlly wish everyone would stop praising pmmm as a holy grail deconstruction of the mahou shoujo genre because revolutionary girl utena did sort of the same thing but much better

me: pmmm is a 12 episode long torture porn created for male audiences to fantasize over girls being in pain, has queerbaiting for a pair of very young girls, and was created with the intent of punishing girls for having dreams or for wanting things, the rebellion plot twist ending was cheap and mischaracterized for the intent of shock value, it has a bunch of fan service and in general is just very shitty

me: theres absolutely no reason for anyone to feel the need to 'deconstruct' the mahou shoujo genre in general because its one that praises girls above everything else, encourages their femininity, empowers them, and shows that they still have the ability to kick ass while being girls and that nobody can take that away from them

me: and anyway mahou shoujo series are never ALWAYS fluffy and good times anyway, there are darker parts, there are parts of sadness & despair, but they're obstacles that characters overcome and make them better for it, rather than uselessly punish them for wanting to save their friends

me: there are some shoujo tropes that are exceptionally harmful and revolutionary girl utena did an exceptionally better job at criticizing them, challenging gender roles and co-dependent ways of thinking, criticizing idealized ideas of princes and princesses and teaching us that we are all human, while also featuring a canon lesbian relationship between 2 girls
