As posted in /r/Melbourne: http://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/comments/2l8dvc/rip_admire_rakti/clshdj4 (by /u/cammo78) in reply to someone who mentioned that 125 horses have died in the past year.

125 horses in 12 months. Ok.

Racing runs probably 360 days a year. In all cities, so lets say there's at least six meetings a day (not counting country/provincial/non-TAB meetings). With 8 races at each. With around 10 runners in each.

So - that's 480 runners (very conservatively) a day, over 360 days a year. That's 172,800 times a year minimum that horses raced last year, and 125 died. A 0.07% chance a horse won't make it to the end.

So - these horses, who are incredibly well treated, should be stopped from racing on these basis that there's a 0.07% chance an accident (which is what causes the majority of these issues) occurs. And the trainers, jockeys, racing industry should just shut up shop too? Send all those people to the job queue?

Just have horses for petting?

Those odds are akin to getting in your car and ending up dead. Shall we ban cars too?

So it's ok that horses die? Is that what you are saying?

...that is absolutely no where near what I was saying. I'm legitimately curious as to how you got that point from what I said?

So what are you trying to say? Horse racing is safe? 125 deaths a year, without counting injuries is fine because car crash tolls are higher?

How many more horses would die if we decided, right now, to do nothing with them? no racing no pony club shows. It isn't an a ideal situation but there is little we can do, especially when there is money involved.

Worst excuse ever.

The first or second part, I think your referring to the second part so here is my response. That industry provides opportunities and income for 1000's of families directly and even more indirectly. Is it good? No but unless we can find a method to faze out horse racing without hurting lots of families. Without having the tax payer pay plenty of money to keep horse fed and safe during fazing out because the alternative is that the owners without being able to make a living of them, hence not afford them, kill them or dump them somewhere. It is just too much of a problem to get rid off something people enjoy and isn't easy to do. We have other things to focus on.

So it's too hard?

[–]EssendonRuhwef 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (3子コメント)

To faze out quickly, yes, overtime and I mean decades no. Plus people like it so unless you can change a large majority of peoples opinion, which you probably won't, it going to stay and so are the horse deaths but so are peoples livelihoods.

Well that justifies it at least, why not reduce the safety of the horses to save some money while we are at it.
