Also, when I wear lipstick, it's for me. Not for men. I know a lot of things us ladies do are "considered for men" but dammit if I want to wear dark lipstick, that's for me. I will wear my bright pink lipstick, berry red, plum, and any other damn shade of lipstick I please!

I once had a guy in class say "you aren't fooling anyone, we all know your hair doesn't grow out half blonde and half brown" and he was serious. I was just shocked and said "whut". In hindsight I wish I had a better/and or real comeback but also how can someone be so stupid? I'm not trying to convince you my hair grows like this naturally! I also have plenty of guys, a surprising amount actually, tell me that it's unattractive that I'm a vegetarian. I don't preach, they find out usually around food or if we are talking about food it sometimes comes up and they say shit like that. Just..the fact that so many people feel the need to say stuff like that to actual people really makes me mad. I mean, I'm obviously not trying to attract you if you think my dark lipstick, high waisted shorts, half blonde hair, and dietary habits disgust you. Duh.

I think the reason some may have disapproved of his comment suggesting the same point about lipstick colours. It's perfectly fine to have an opinion - but the way it's phrased seems like he's saying "WELL I AM A MAN AND DARK LIPSTICK IS FINE FOR ME. NOT ALL MEN ARE LIKE THAT. But bright red lipstick isn't okay." So he's saying the same thing as those who don't like dark lipstick on women, really.

Maybe even in another context that would be somewhat okay. But the context here is that a person's preferences are being forced on another person. I can definitely see why someone might have reacted negatively to his comment, although I am sure he has good intentions.

I think maybe a response of "that is irrelevant to me" would have been more fitting that "I don't care". There's almost literally no remark to reply to his comment, because many women wear whatever makeup they like without moulding it to fit others' preferences. To suggest anything is less attractive than the other solely because of the colour of their lips sounds a bit banal to me, and probably quite annoying for the women in question.

Just my theory on 'why', I guess. ^ ^

I get what you're saying, but the idea that his opinion was somehow misogynistic (which seems to be the general consensus here) is what I disagree with. As a gay man, I personally prefer men with shorter hair. But that doesn't mean that my preference is being forced onto anyone. Should men be offended by my preference? And if a woman expresses her opinion about male fashion, should her opinion be automatically shut down as his was?

To your second point... it's definitely true that the majority of women "wear whatever makeup they like without moulding it to fit others' preferences." But there are also many women who do value the opinions of others. This is the primary reason that fashion blogs, mags exist at all. This was the entire premise of Fashion Police! ^{RIP Joan}

I'm frequently asked by my female friends and acquaintances if "this lip is too dark for me," or if "I should wear my hair up or down," etc. They're certainly not asking me for my approval, they're asking me because I have eyes and a perspective. The fact that I'm not a woman, doesn't mean that my opinion is less valuable... and I think that as people who believe in equality, we should be open to the opinions of straight men as well.

Also perfectly fine to disagree! But please keep in mind that a woman might be able to slightly better determine what is misogynistic, just as a POC might be able to slight better determine what is racist to them. Definitely not saying your opinion is wrong or less valuable - but it might be less relevant depending on the person and occurrence/situation. Going up to your Jewish friend and saying "Hey, I really admire the resilience of your people" - although true, you might be able to appreciate and admire their perseverance during persecution they went through - can be pretty irrelevant. Even if you're not really saying a mean thing. Yes, it is your opinion. But is it the appropriate time/place? And not to be heteronormative, but if my dad who has never had a period starts telling me which tampons I should be buying, it's not that I don't care what he has to say - it's that I don't feel like his opinion is relevant. He can probably read boxes or reviews as well as I can. But he will never precisely know what I require in such a product.

Spouting your opinion sporadically can be great - like this discussion right now. I like it. It's how you find people with common interests. But sometimes your opinion, when unsolicited, can be rude. For example, if I walked down the street telling people what I personally prefer about a human being, it could be quite rude. Can you imagine saying "Hey, I prefer thinner men" to an obese man? Similarly, "I don't mind pale-skinned Caucasian women. It's the tanned ones I don't like" to a more tan women. It's still offensive and a little pushy. Which I feel is a very similar to the "I don't mind dark lipstick; it's the bright red that I don't like". Yes, it's your preference.

Hmm. I feel like the difference is that they have asked for your opinion. I feel like many of the people here would be open to a male opinion - if it was asked for.

I think the main issue here is that it wasn't a question. She did not ask for an opinion; although she did make a statement about her confusion on the matter. The parent's parent comment above her, however, did ask a question. Maybe if he replied to that person directly, it might have been okay? Even then, he doesn't really explain why. He just kinda stated his preference with no rationalization, which seems to be what people are looking for - not just a standalone opinion.

I don't claim to speak for the community at all. I'm still trying to look at it from a different perspective, but this is what makes most sense to me. Feel free to comment back if you feel like I'm still missing, something, though! C:

I mean, male opinion on this subject already has a value of 0, so yours can't be worth any less.

But don't sit here and talk about negative opinions alone and then tell positive ones that they're not needed. Obviously they are, or the negative ones wouldn't matter so much.

You can't sit there and tell me what matters to me. What matters to me is that people should shut the fuck up about what women are wearing because women are not wearing clothes for other people. Don't talk about it (to strangers) either way. No one gives a flying fuck if you like my shorts or lipstick or not, you're some random person on the internet.

I will sit here and talk about how positive opinions are not needed because I don't need your validation. I don't need to hear your opinion either way because it doesn't matter. That's the entire point, which you are missing. No one gives a shit if men like high waisted shorts, we just think men should stop insulting us over it.

You really missed what I said in the first place though, in your nitpick through my comment, I said it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. But you didn't see that, you saw an opportunity to strike at the "patriarchy" so to speak. Which is why I said you must be lonely. If someone isn't allowed to even give compliments, there's something wrong with the world.

I don't care what you wear, but it's not like my opinion matters right? So why are you bothering with this? Why not ignore me? Obviously I'm in no way attempting to be sexist or anything, but you choose me to take your unadulterated hatred on. It's silly
